In pursuit of happiness? Happiness means many different things to many different people. Chances are you believe in happiness. We are all wired to seek it and yet, with all mankind's advances, people are increasingly unhappy. Here's practical steps from Yubi's recent talk at SOHO on how to grow happiness within ourselves, our relationships, our work(or as I now prefer to say callings) and our experiences. - This space wallpaper from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the galaxy cluster MCS J0416.1–2403. This is one of six being studied by the Hubble Frontier Fields programme. This programme seeks to analyse the mass distribution in these huge clusters and to use the gravitational lensing effect of these clusters, to peer even deeper into the distant Universe. We are actually wired to be, seek and enjoy happiness as human beings. There are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. And on our small planet in our galaxy, it is obvious that a lot of what has been created displays harmony, beauty, wellbeing and a sense of …happiness.
- My brother-in law decided to climb Mont Blanc, the over 4500m White Mountain.Think about this for a minute: freezing cold, risks of hypothermia and losing limbs due to frostbite, your whole metabolism is affected, you are driven to extremes spiritually,emotionally,physically. Most people would not define climbing up 4,500m as happiness but as meaningless suffering. Many would prefer lying on a hammock on a warm tropical isaland somewhere. The point is, people are different and a lot of external factors determining happines differ greatly. What excites me may not excite you even though you may appreciate it somewhat.
- My goal is not to present you all the different definitions of happiness but rather to enrich our perception of what happiness is and provide practical steps on how to plant and grow happiness in our lives. For many, happiness equates to success professionally and financially and yes, it is a major factor. The world around us hides and holds possibilities of discovering andenjoying happiness. The pursuit and enjoyment of happiness is a good thing. We’ve all heard that everyone has the right to be happy and we do. We are the most intelligent,sophisticated,beautiful and harmonious beings in existence in the entire universe. The photo you are viewing was taken by someone who experiences great happiness from exploring the world.
- We seem to seek it most within, in relationships, at work and through experiences. Ultimate happiness comes through a harmonious combination of all of these. This is the reason why some people may be extremely wealthy and depressed or have the greatest experiences and still be unhappy or the most decisive of all, be in relationships and feel alone or unhappy. Ideas and questions are some of the most powerful tools we possess as human beings. Our inquisitiveness has always aided civilizations in reaching what we view as pinnacles of human experience or achievement. Ideas and questions are born in the mind. Ideas are more potent than we are sometimes willing to admit. When ideas become words, spoken or written these affect ours and the destinies of countless others. Entire political,economic, judiciary,commerce and cultural systems existing today are the ideas of dead men. Alas, ideas and questions in our own minds dicatate our perception, pursuit and experience of happiness.
- These are the main components of happiness that give meaning within us to thegrandiose universe around us. Looking at everything in existence from the 100 billion galaxies to the earth today, the sun,light itself,trees,the mountains,the waters,there seems to be a message of good and happiness. We experience this each time we go out on a trip into the wild. Man was created to be happy so its natural that through time, man has been in pursuit of happiness. And in the understanding of and dominon over the earth today,we sense fulfilment to a degree, happiness! So man seeks and senses great happiness through experiences but man's greatest happiness or unhappiness is experienced in relatonships (within ourselves and with others) So we come down from a view beyond the 100 billion galaxies to human beings, the epitome of creation and our pursuit of happiness. To our personal happiness,relationships, our work(or as I now prefer to say callings) and our experiences. And yet, with all mankind’s advancements to date, all the wealth that has been created over the past 50 years which exceeds all of human history prior to it, people increasingly have seemed the world over to be getting unhappier.
- One of the main decisions that will determine the quality of your life is the decision to manage your mind. Personal Change. Your imagination is the most powerful ingredient in the formation of change. When youwant to change seasons, change lifestyle. I heard someone talk of a room called think world. Your mind is your world and you can access pleasure or pain thru the imagination. Your imagination can create any feeling you want. Training your mind is marvelous. Your body responds to your imagination. Your body is a servant to your mind Protect your mind, identify the purpose of your mind. The purpose of your mind is to gather data and file it. If you tell your mind, find me reasons why my neighbour hates me… or I should be broke. It comes back with evidence. Your mind will go back to the history of your exps and collect exps connected to the instr. Your mind must be yr servant and you tell it what to look for or listen for. You fix yr mind to search for theright data to substantiate the right instructions.
- Your Mind is The Factory of Your Own Happiness –Who you are Affects What You See. Subconscious mind, what is also called the heart Your heart determines the vision but your mind will determine the experience Einstein said: The imagination is more important than knowledge because the imagination decides where you go for knowledge It decides the knowledge you pursue. What happens in your mind will happen in time. You have an imagination to picture your future. Whatever you sustain in your imagination, you will experience. 3. Watching my decisions Your decisions determine your direction and your direction determines your destiny or experience Decisions has to do with wisdom which brings me to my favourite definition of happiness: Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Solomon personifies wisdom in his proverbs saying: She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. My personal guide to wisdom and of course, happiness is the bible. Happiness is a Happy childhood is happiness was a good definition a friend of mine gave me. Good memories. Forms your way of thinking in life and is carried on to your own children.
- One way I learned to train my mind to maintain and grow my happiness is: Becoming 100% responsible – 3 questions, and 3 things you should not focus on Your mind has 2 functions imagination and memory- replay you rpast, preplay your future Stop replaying the bad images in your mind. Replace them with your own mouth. My choices determine my daily happiness
- Learning to stop and listen Catch people doing something good and don’t be focused on the negative.Say thank you and appreciate them We need to learn how to communicate Without communication, there is no relationship. In communication, there is giving,sharing,receiving and confronting. Guess which part is the hardest. Usually the last two How effective we are in communicating determines our happiness. Becoming assertive and not passive or aggressive.
- Why? The answer to the first provides you with a sense of purpose What? The answer to the second gives you a vision for the future How? Planning by first understanding where you are and the distance between your desired future and where you are. The How involves having a plan on getting to where you are headed The how involves work. You don’t just wish upon a star alone, you need to get to work or nothing is going to happen. If you keep focusing on the ‘what’,the ‘how’ will show up eventually. Some people get frustrated by being focused on how things are going to happen and stop thinking about the what. If you focus on the what long enough, the how is going to show up.
- Experiences are another component of happiness. Individual and vital for exveryone. Shared experiences are very powerful. How about the topic of money? So does money make us happy? I say, Yes and No! If we seek happiness in money itself, it becomes the root of all evil. However, there are two possibilities I know of about money: First, that money cannot buy happiness. Second, that money can buy some happiness, but people just don’t know how to use it that way. The good news is that this seems to be the correct answer. The balance that I see is The first is to buy less stuff and more experiences. We buy a sofa instead of a ski trip, not taking into account that we will get used to the sofa very quickly and that it will stop being a source of happiness, while the vacation will likely stay in our minds for a long time. The reason is because we are created to be in relationships. Value comes in relationships. I see that as relationship with your creator and relationships with other people. Research done showed that after a certain level of income, people’s happiness did not increase much with increased income. Especially in certain countries, you want to be able to afford certain things to live a certain minimum or meaningful life for you. Beyond that, money itself will not make you happy. So in conclusion about money and happiness, it is better to invest much more money in experiences with and for people than possessions.
