There is a growing understanding (after several years of testing our students to death) that we are not really preparing them for the world they will face. Beginning in the late 1990s with the SCANS report from the US Dept of Labor, it has become increasingly clearly that the skills our young people will need to succeed are significantly different than what high schools were designed to produce.
The skills needed to be successful today are much different than they were when schools were designed
This issue can be looked at as a economic issue of competing in a global economy where if your job can be replaced by robots, it will be. Or we can look at this as a moral calling to give our students a real opportunity to make a family wage. Either way, change is necessary. In coaxing change in schools, we must look at each level of the hierarchy and understand where we are and what we need to work on. The bottom three are largely the role of district and administration …. Difficult to change instruction without the low levels being aligned with their work. Must change the rules of the game in order to see a change in the behaviors of the players.
