1) A spiritual famine will come upon the earth when people reject the truths revealed by God's Spirit, just as in the time of Noah.
2) During this time, people will wander seeking spiritual bread (Jesus) and water (Holy Spirit) but will not find it, as false teachings will proliferate.
3) God's people will be protected and provided for during this time of judgment on the wicked.
2. “The cause of God needs men and women who will stand
on the platform of truth without wavering, and who
will hold the banner of truth firmly aloft, so that no
man can fail to see on which side they are standing.
Their position is to be clearly defined. Their hearts are
to be pure and holy, free from pretense or deception….
You may show to the world that the truth which you
profess sanctifies and ennobles the character and leads to
industry and frugality, while it avoids avarice,
overreaching, and every species of dishonesty. In your
words manifest patience and forbearance, and you may
every day be preaching a sermon upon the power of
truth and do effectual service to the cause of God. Let
no one say that the truth you profess makes you no
different from the worldling. . . . Do not give the least
occasion for anyone to speak ill of your faith because you
are not sanctified through the truth”. Higher Calling

3. [1] The scriptures gives us an analysis of the
experience{spirit} of men in the earth just before
it is destroyed. Their constant rejection of the
Spirit of God which brings revealed truths{faith}
to the minds of men, brings them as in the time of
Noah as God said “My Spirit will not always
strive with men…”Gen.6:3.
“And God looked upon the earth, and, behold it
was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way
upon the earth.{13}And God said unto Noah, The
end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is
filled with violence through them, and, behold,
I will destroy them with the earth .”Gen.6:12,13.
4. Amos 8:11-13 “Behold the days come,
saith the Lord God, that I will send a
famine in the land, not a famine of
bread, nor a thirst for water, but of
hearing the words of the
Lord:{12}And they shall wander
from sea to sea,, and from the north
even to the east, they shall run to and
fro to seek the word of the Lord, and
shall not find it.{13}In that day shall
the fair virgins and young men
faint for thirst.”
5. {2}The words of Jesus as it relates to spiritual bread
and water represents the following:
[a]Jesus said that he is the bread of life:
Jn.6:33,35,50,51,53-59 “For the bread of God is he
which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life
to the world…[35]And Jesus said unto them, I am
the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never
hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never
thirst…[50]This is the bread which cometh down
from heaven, that man may eat thereof, and not
die.[51]I am the living bread which came down
from heaven: If any man eat of this bread, he shall
live forever: and the bread that I will give is my
flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
6. Jn.6:53-59 “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, Verily ,
I said unto you, Except you eat the flesh of the Son
of man, and drink his blood , you have no life in
you.[54]Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my
blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at
the last day.[55]For my flesh is meat indeed, and
my blood is drink in deed.[56]He that eateth my
flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and
I in him.[57]As the living father hath sent me, and I
live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he
shall live by me.[58]This is that bread which came
down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat
manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread
shall live forever.[59]These things said he in the
synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.”
7. [b]The Holy Spirit is the “Water” given by Jesus:
Mt.3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is
mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to
bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,
and with fire:”
Jn.7:37-39 “In the last day, that great day of the feast,
Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let
him come unto me, and drink.[38]He that
believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of
his belly shall flow rivers of living water.[39](But
this he spake of the Spirit, which they that believe
on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not
yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
8. Acts.2:38,39 “Then Peter said unto
them, Repent, and be baptized
everyone of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and
you shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.[39]For the promise is unto
you, and to your children, and to all
that are afar off, even as many as
the Lord our God shall call.”
9. {3}Therefore there is a time coming when the
knowledge of the doing and dying of Jesus which
is revealed by the Holy Spirit known as {Faith}
will not be in the earth. This is known as spiritual
famine.
{4}A “spiritual famine” in a nation means “a
faithless nation” or “sinful nation”:
Rom.10:8,17 “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee,
even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word
of faith, which we preach;…[17]So then faith
cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of
God.”
Rom.14:23 “And he that doubteth is damned if he eat,
because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not
of faith is sin.”
10. Rom.1:16,17 “For I am not ashamed of
the gospel of Christ: for it is the power
of God unto salvation to everyone
that believeth; to the Jew first, and
also to the Greek.[17]For therein is the
righteousness of God revealed from
faith to faith: as it is written, The just
shall live by faith.”
Pro.14:34 “Righteousness exalteth a
nation: but sin is a reproach to any
people.”
11. {5}A sinful nation changes the knowledge
of God into idolatrous lies:
Rom.1:21-23 “Because that, when they knew
God, they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful; but became vain in
their imaginations, and their foolish
hearts were darkened.[22]Professing
themselves to be wise, they became
fools,[23]And changed the glory of the
incorruptible God into an image like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and four-
footed beasts, and creeping things.”
12. Rom.1:25,28-32 “Who changed the truth of God into a
lie, and worshipped and served the creature more
than the creator, who is blessed forever,
amen…[28]and as they did not like to retain God in
their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate
mind, to do those things which are not
convenient;[29]Being filled with all unrighteousness,
fornication, wickedness, covetousness,
maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit
malignity; whispers;[30]Backbiters, haters of God,
despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things,
disobedient to parents,[31]without understanding,
covenant breakers, without natural affection,
implacable, unmerciful:[32]Who knowing the
judgment of God, that they which commit such
things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but
have pleasure in them that do them.”
13. {6} The time is coming when with spiritual
famine in the earth, the true God will be
sought after but will not be found:
{Amos 8:12 “And they shall wander from
sea to sea, and from the north even to the
east, they shall run to and fro to seek the
word of the Lord, and shall not find it.”
Dan. 12:4 “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the
words, and seal the book, even to the
time of the end: many shall run to and
fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”}
14. Mat. 24:5, 23-26 “For many shall come in
my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall
deceive many…[23]Then if any man
shall say unto you, lo, here is Christ ,or
there; believe it not.[24]For there shall
arise false Christs, and false prophets,
and shall show great signs and wonders;
insomuch that, if it were possible , they
shall deceive the very elect.[25]Behold I
have told you before.[26]Wherefore if
they shall say unto you, behold, he is in
the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in
the secret chambers; believe it not.”
15. {7} The act of wandering gives a knowledge
of imprisonment for wrong doing or
lawlessness:
Num.14:33,34 “And your children shall
wander in the wilderness forty years, and
bear your whoredoms, until your
carcasses be wasted in the
wilderness.[34]After the number of the
days in which you searched the land, even
forty days, each day for a year, shall you
bear your iniquities, even forty years, and
you shall know my breach of promise.”
16. Ps.107:40 “He poureth contempt upon
princes, and causeth them to wander in
the wilderness, where there is no way.”
Jb.15:23 “ He wandereth abroad for bread,
saying, Where is it? He knoweth that
the day of darkness is ready at his
hand.”
Pro.21:16 “The man that wandereth out of
the way of understanding shall remain
in the congregation of the dead.”
17. {8} Virgin and young men gives the
knowledge of one in innocence, not
exposed to the subtly of error:
1Cor.11:1-3 “Be ye followers of me, even as
I also am of Christ.[2]Now I praise you,
brethren, that you remember me in all
things, and keep the ordinances, as I
delivered them to you.[3]But I would
have you know, that the head of every
man is Christ; and the head of every
woman is the man; and the head of
Christ is God.”
18. {9} Amidst all this spiritual and physical
famine, God’s people will be taken cared of:
Isa.33:14-18 “The sinners of Zion are afraid;
fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites.
Who among us shall dwell with the
devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell
with the everlasting burnings?[15]He that
walketh righteously, and speaketh
uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of
oppressions, that shaketh his hand from
taking of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from
hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes
from seeing evil;…
19. Isa. 33:16-18 “…He shall dwell on high: his place of
defense shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall
be given him; his waters shall be sure.[17]Thine
eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall
behold the land that is very far off.[18]Thine heart
shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? Where is
the receiver? Where is he that counted the towers?”
Isa.41:17,18 “When the poor and needy seek water,
and there is none, and their tongue faileth for
thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel
will not forsake them.[18]I will open rivers in high
places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I
will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the
dry lands springs of water.”
20. E.W.#281-284 “Then I saw Jesus lay off His
priestly attire and clothe Himself with His
most kingly robes. Upon His head were
many crowns, a crown within a crown.
Surrounded by the angelic host, He left
heaven. The plagues were falling upon the
inhabitants of the earth. Some were
denouncing God and cursing Him. Others
rushed to the people of God and begged to
be taught how they might escape His
judgments. But the saints had nothing for
them….
21. …The last tear for sinners had been
shed, the last agonizing prayer
offered, the last burden borne, the last
warning given. The sweet voice of
mercy was no more to invite them.
When the saints, and all heaven, were
interested for their salvation, they had
no interest for themselves. Life and
death had been set before them. Many
desired life, but made no effort to
obtain it….
22. …They did not choose life, and now there
was no atoning blood to cleanse the guilty,
no compassionate Saviour to plead for
them, and cry, "Spare, spare the sinner a
little longer." All heaven had united with
Jesus, as they heard the fearful words, "It is
done. It is finished." The plan of salvation
had been accomplished, but few had chosen
to accept it. And as mercy's sweet voice
died away, fear and horror seized the
wicked. With terrible distinctness they
heard the words, "Too late! too late!"
23. …Those who had not prized God's Word were
hurrying to and fro, wandering from sea to sea,
and from the north to the east, to seek the Word
of the Lord. Said the angel, "They shall not find
it. There is a famine in the land; not a famine of
bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the
words of the Lord. What would they not give for
one word of approval from God! but no, they
must hunger and thirst on. Day after day have
they slighted salvation, prizing earthly riches
and earthly pleasure higher than any heavenly
treasure or inducement. They have rejected
Jesus and despised His saints. The filthy must
remain filthy forever.“…
24. …Many of the wicked were greatly
enraged as they suffered the effects of the
plagues. It was a scene of fearful agony.
Parents were bitterly reproaching their
children, and children their parents,
brothers their sisters, and sisters their
brothers. Loud, wailing cries were heard
in every direction, "It was you who kept
me from receiving the truth which
would have saved me from this awful
hour.“…
25. …The people turned upon their ministers
with bitter hate and reproached them,
saying, "You have not warned us. You told
us that all the world was to be converted,
and cried, Peace, peace, to quiet every fear
that was aroused. You have not told us of
this hour; and those who warned us of it
you declared to be fanatics and evil men,
who would ruin us." But I saw that the
ministers did not escape the wrath of God.
Their suffering was tenfold greater than
that of their people….
26. … I saw the saints leaving the cities
and villages, and associating
together in companies, and living
in the most solitary places. Angels
provided them food and water,
while the wicked were suffering
from hunger and thirst. Then I saw
the leading men of the earth
consulting together, and Satan and
his angels busy around them…
27. …I saw a writing, copies of which were
scattered in different parts of the land,
giving orders that unless the saints
should yield their peculiar faith, give up
the Sabbath, and observe the first day of
the week, the people were at liberty after
a certain time to put them to death. But
in this hour of trial the saints were calm
and composed, trusting in God and
leaning upon His promise that a way of
escape would be made for them….
28. …In some places, before the time for the
decree to be executed, the wicked rushed upon
the saints to slay them; but angels in the form
of men of war fought for them. Satan wished
to have the privilege of destroying the saints
of the Most High; but Jesus bade His angels
watch over them. God would be honored by
making a covenant with those who had kept
His law, in the sight of the heathen round
about them; and Jesus would be honored by
translating, without their seeing death, the
faithful, waiting ones who had so long
expected Him….
29. …Soon I saw the saints suffering great mental
anguish. They seemed to be surrounded by the
wicked inhabitants of the earth. Every appearance
was against them. Some began to fear that God had
at last left them to perish by the hand of the wicked.
But if their eyes could have been opened, they
would have seen themselves surrounded by angels
of God. Next came the multitude of the angry
wicked, and next a mass of evil angels, hurrying on
the wicked to slay the saints. But before they could
approach God's people, the wicked must first pass
this company of mighty, holy angels. This was
impossible. The angels of God were causing them to
recede and also causing the evil angels who were
pressing around them to fall back….
30. …It was an hour of fearful, terrible agony to the saints.
Day and night they cried unto God for deliverance. To
outward appearance, there was no possibility of their
escape. The wicked had already begun to triumph, crying
out, "Why doesn't your God deliver you out of our hands?
Why don't you go up and save your lives?" But the saints
heeded them not. Like Jacob, they were wrestling with
God. The angels longed to deliver them, but they must wait
a little longer; the people of God must drink of the cup
and be baptized with the baptism. The angels, faithful to
their trust, continued their watch. God would not suffer His
name to be reproached among the heathen. The time had
nearly come when He was to manifest His mighty power
and gloriously deliver His saints. For His name's glory He
would deliver every one of those who had patiently
waited for Him and whose names were written in the
book. “
31. G.C. #628-29 “All the judgments upon
men, prior to the close of probation,
have been mingled with mercy. The
pleading blood of Christ has
shielded the sinner from receiving
the full measure of his guilt; but in
the final Judgment, wrath is poured
out unmixed with mercy.
In that day, multitudes will desire
the shelter of God's mercy which
they have so long despised….
32. …The people of God will not be free
from suffering; but while persecuted
and distressed, while they endure
privation, and suffer for want of food,
they will not be left to perish. That
God who cared for Elijah will not pass
by one of his self-sacrificing children.
He who numbers the hairs of their
head will care for them, and in time
of famine they shall be satisfied…
33. …While the wicked are dying from
hunger and pestilence, angels will
shield the righteous, and supply their
wants. To him that "walketh
righteously" is the promise, "Bread
shall be given him; his waters shall be
sure." "When the poor and needy seek
water, and there is none, and their
tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will
hear them, I the God of Israel will not
forsake them." [ISA. 33:16; 41:17.]
34. 10. Therefore we are to heed the voice
of the Holy Spirit and remain faithful
to the end:
Lk.21:36 “Watch ye therefore, and pray
always, that ye may be accounted
worthy to escape all these things that
shall come to pass, and to stand
before the Son of man.”
