A Message from the Regional Manager

Welcome to ZINGO South’s first monthly newsletter! We hope that you find
this newsletter informative on ZINGO South’s programmes and activities,
what is happening in our organisation, as well as what we have coming up. We
also would like to hear more of your feedback and ideas on what you would
like to see from ZINGO South, so please feel free to email us with your
thoughts or drop by our office.

Throughout the month of February we have been very busy ramping up our
Self Help Groups for Women. This has involved a number of visits and
information sessions to explain the concept of the groups to women in the
community, as well as seeing a preview of what some of the groups have
already achieved. It has been great getting out and meeting so many
enthusiastic and determined women.
February has also been a busy month with further planning for the year ahead, including continuation of our
Educational Assistance for OVCs in Livingstone District, which offers help with school fees and scholastic
materials, and a new year of Sewing and Tailoring lessons for women.
The year ahead also has its challenges as we seek new partners for our youth focused programmes on HIV
prevention, Skills for life and Resource Centre. As always we hope to meet these challenges head on as we
continue on our mission to promote better quality of life and a reduction of new infections in Southern
Zambia.

Wishing you all a great March.

Timothy Miyoba

What’s been happening in the month of February

Orphans & Vulnerable Children Educational Assistance
ZINGO South entered into a partnership with Churches Association of Zambia (CHAZ- Global Fund) via
the ZINGO Head Office for funds to support Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and their families
with educational assistance and food supplements in Livingstone District.
ZINGO South is implementing this program through two of its members, the Muslim and BAHA`I faiths.
This program started in June 2010 with the aim of reaching 200 direct beneficiaries.
To date this programme has supported 120 OVCs with educational support (40 secondary level and 80
primary) and 80 families with food supplements. We have also reached a number of school children with
Behavioural Change Communication messages on HIV/AIDS.
This is an ongoing project for the next three years during which we are also hoping to find ways to extend
to other OVCs and ensure the sustainability of it for the future.

Self Help Groups for Women
The concept of Self Help Group (SHG) concept is to bring
women together who are in same communities and have
similar social and economic situations. The women groups
(usually around 15-20 women) save on a weekly basis and
give out loans to each other, predominately for Income
                             Generating Activities.
The basic principles of the concept are that as individuals
the poor are voiceless, powerless and vulnerable; together,
they have tremendous strength. By empowering women
their children ultimately benefit, with improved access to
school and health are and overall quality of life.
With the support of KNH/SHG, ZINGO South began a
SHG programme in late 2010, working with women groups
in Livingstone District. By the end of last year 6 groups had
formed, with all the groups accepting the concept and
starting to save an average of K1000 per person per week.
In 2011 the programme has successfully continued with the
addition of 2 community Facilitators and more new groups
forming. In the month of February 7 new groups were
                                                        formed bringing the total number
of women groups to 17 and the
                                                        number of women involved fast
                                                        approaching 400. Also this
                                                        month, 32 group representatives
                                                        were trained in bookkeeping and
                                                        the moderating of SHG meetings
as the embedding of the SHG
                                                        model continues.

Income Generation Activities: Tailoring and Sewing

We established an IGA system at ZINGO South in
2009. With chitenge we started making small items such
as bags and pouches, and sell them at local restaurants,
lodges and shops where tourists gather. Additionally, we
received two contracts to make 110 school uniforms and
delivered them to two basic schools.
IGA advisor Hiromi with women training
With the IGA money, ZINGO South has been able to
transfer tailoring skills to community women. They have
learnt how to make Shirts, Skirt, Trousers and Dresses.
55 lectures have been held so far with a total of 140
people participating and more to come.

                                                                                Chitenge: Traditional Zambian fabric

              February Did You Know?

The official HIV prevalence rate for Livingstone District is 26.2%, compared to a 14.5% prevalence rate
for Zambia’s Southern Province and 14.3% for all of Zambia

Fundraising Update

February was busy finalising details for a number of programmes we are looking to launch or re-launch over
the coming year. High priority programmes are those which focus on our youth and we are currently
seeking support for our youth HIV prevention education programme and youth training in trades and
Income Generation Activities. Anyone who is able to provide assistance with these programmes or any of
our others should contact the ZINGO South office.
Throughout the month we also spent time as a team devising additional Income Generating Activities for
our organisation that will assist to support the continuity of our programmes. The team has come up with
lots of great ideas leading us into the next important process of evaluating which ones are most viable. We
will keep our readers and supporters updated on the outcome of this process.
