Pop music originated in the United States/United Kingdom, during mid-1950s. Pop
music is usually short for popular music. In pop music videos, they tend to have a
happy and light tone filled with colour and ‘pop’. The aim of popular music is to
appeal to a general audience, instead of an ideology or subculture. There is an
emphasis on recording. Production, and technology rather than live performance or
actual artistic talent. Pop music tracks usually contain a good rhythm and harmony
with a catchy hook to draw in mainstream audiences, which in turn gains them radio
play and recognition. In recent times, pop music tracks have also started to feature
rappers to try and change up the hook of a song.
4. Rock
Rock music sound is traditionally amplified electric guitar as the popularisation of
rock and roll increased in the 1950s. The use of instruments as well as deep lyrics
focusing on sex, rebellion, and drugs, which differed from other styles of music,
making rock music popular with fans. Rock music videos tend to have darker
colours to emphasise on the heavier emotional state and vibe the band wants to
convey to their audiences. They also tend to not follow the traditional style of lyrical
content seen in pop music, with less filtered content such as explicit language,
scenes, and references to real world problems. Men tend to be more predominant
in the rock industry, especially bands.
6. Indie
Indie music is a collective term for music meaning “independent”. It is usually tied to
many existing genres like pop and rock, but has its own unique sound. It began
with the band Nirvana with more artists taking influence in the 1990s, beginning the
“indie rock” genre. Indie music videos tend to be lower in budget compared to pop
music videos, but they usually have deeper meaning focusing around the male’s
perspective of love. They are also created to be more representative and relatable,
with casual costume and relatable themes being at the forefront of the video.
