  22. What is a Contract ◦ A contract is a mutual business agreement recognized by law under which one party undertakes to do work for another party. Good administration of contracts minimizes costs, risks, claims and maximizes savings & economic returns.

Unit Price Contract ◦ Advantages ◦ Allow the owner of the project to make changes in some items by increasing or decreasing during the implementation of the project and also involving the contractor and the owner to bear the risks that may occur to the project during the implementation. ◦ Disadvantages ◦ The owner shall not be certain of the actual value of the project until the completion of the project. The reason for this is due to the accuracy of the unit price calculation for each item within the project.

Lump Sum Contract ◦ Low risk to the owner. ◦ 'Fixed' construction cost. ◦ Minimize change orders. ◦ Owner supervision is reduced when compared to Time and Material Contract. ◦ The contractor will try to complete the project faster. ◦ Accepted widely as a contracting method. ◦ Bidding analysis and selection process is relatively easy.

Introduction ◦ Quantity surveying is a technique of calculating or computing the various quantities and measured quantities of items for work by the drawing and specification in the tendering document. ◦ The rules for measurement of each item are invariably described however some of the general rules are listed below. ◦ Measurement shall be made for finished item of work and description of each item shall include materials, transport, labor, fabrication tools and plant and all types of Overheads for finishing the work in required shape, size and specification. ◦ In booking, the order shall be in sequence of length, breadth and height or thickness. ◦ All works shall be measured subject to the following tolerances.

  1. To use this title animation slide with a new image simply 1) move the top semi-transparent shape to the side, 2) delete placeholder image, 3) click on the picture icon to add a new picture, 4) Move semi-transparent shape back to original position, 5) Update text on slide.
  2. Store bars of different classes, sizes and lengths separately to facilitate issues in such sizes and lengths so as to minimize wastage in cutting from standard lengths. Paint the ends of bars of each class in distinct separate colors. Coat steel reinforcement with cement wash before stacking to prevent scaling and rusting. If reinforcement bars have to be stored for a long period, then stack it above ground level by at least 150 mm.
  3. Bricks should be stacked on edge in rows to a maximum height of 2.4 m. It is important that they are stored on level, well-drained ground and covered with a polythene sheet to protect against efflorescence and other issues. When calculating the area required for storage, allowance of around 5 m should be given for the forklift approach.
