Thich Quang Duc was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who burned himself to death in 1963 to protest the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government, which favored Catholicism over Buddhism. Videos of his self-immolation brought worldwide attention to the Buddhist struggle for equal treatment under the law in South Vietnam.
