The ManguindanaoMassacre- Facts
The country’s worst political violence and the deadliest attacks on journalists.
During the Manguindanao massacre also known as the Ampatuan Massacre, more than 50 people were brutally murdered.
The killings and torture occurred on Nov. 23 2009 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, in the town of Manguindanao in Ampatuan.
The Reason for the attack
Vice Mayor Esmael "Toto" Mangudadatu was going to file nomination papers certificate of candidacy to run for governor, in his political rival’s stronghold.
“Toto” was warned not to go, but decided it would be safer if his family, relatives, close friends and 36 journalists go and fill in the papers for him in support, basically as protection and witnesses.
The Attack
It was a politically motivated attack.
The victims were on their way to file the candidacy papers for their leader “Toto” for the May elections.
Most of the victims were killed including Toto’s wife and pregnant sister and 33 journalists
AndalAmpatuan Jr. was planning to replace his father since he was retiring and this could have been the cause for the attack.
They thought that they would get away with the massacre because they were close with the president and had connections with the government.
Impacts and affects
Social- The attack affected the people that supported “Toto” because they might be afraid to vote for him because of the massacres. Also it will affect the people as some lost their friends and family during the massacre.
Political- This could be a political affect because both candidates are running for governor. This affects the political issue as being governor is huge role for the country. Another political issue is that people do not get the right to vote or speak freely.
Solutions
A Solution would be to have the government protect both candidates so they would not harm each other.
Another solution is for the police to monitor the area to protect the people that could be killed.
