Sportsmanship Slide Show

  1. 1. Sportsmanship By Edi Leka
  2. 2. What is Sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is fair, respectful and polite behavior when playing a sport. This is expected to be shown by all athletes in their respected sports.
  3. 3. Ethics - Good Owners and Coaches Gregg Popovich is a very classy man who always carries great respect for opponents whether they win or lose. For example, when his Spurs team lost to Lebron and the Heat in the 2013 NBA Finals, Popovich showed nothing but love and respect for the Miami Heat players and continuously congratulated them. That’s what true sportsmanship looks like.
  4. 4. Ethics - Bad Owners and Coaches NFL Head Coach Mike Tomlin has exhibited some very unsportsmanlike behavior in my opinion. I have watched Pittsburg Steelers’ games and I have seen him avoid the other team’s head coach on national television after a loss. This is extremely disrespectful and shows that he has very poor sportsmanship. Also, I have witnessed him trip a player who had an open touchdown in order to stop him from scoring which shows he doesn’t respect the other team and their players. These are examples of bad sportsmanship.
  5. 5. Ethics - Personal Health and Safety Experience My freshmen year in high school I played football and I was the quarterback. At an away game, I was hit while throwing and awkwardly landed on my shoulder the wrong way. I ended up tearing the labrum in my shoulder which resulted in me no longer playing football. This injury, in my opinion, was unethical because the turf was not very safe. Usually, the turf has a rubber layer under but at this school, there was no padding but just concrete.
  6. 6. Ethics - Unethical Health and Safety Treatment I believe Robert Griffin III’s injury of tearing his ACL multiple times was just out of misfortune and due to his style of play. He was a duel threat quarterback who was constantly on the move and putting his body at risk for the extra yards. I think his injury was treated a bit unethically because in Washington, the Redskins were putting him back on the field even if he wasn’t fully cleared.
  7. 7. Ethics - Positive Athletes in their Communities Lebron James is a professional NBA player and he is constantly having an impact on his community. He always gives back to Akron, Ohio. For example, he bought the Akron high school football team all new equipment and jerseys. This was important to the community because he donated gear for a high school team out of kindness since he has the ability to.
  8. 8. Ethics - Negative Athletes in their Communities The actions of former NFL player Aaron Hernandez caught everyone off guard including his community. He was found guilty of murdering Odin Lloyd which ended up ruining his career completely and earning him a life sentence in prison as a consequence. It had such a negative impact because his community in Bristol, Connecticut looked up to him as a local idol and when they found out what he had done, it brought down their morals.
  9. 9. Ethics - Good Fan Behavior I believe a good fan is one that supports his team by buying their gear, watching their games and showing other ways of support. They cannot break out in violence against other fans and they do not riot or protest in favor of their team.
  10. 10. Ethics - Bad Fan Behavior A bad fan will get drunk at games and start fights and arguments. This ends up becoming violent and people always get hurt or have their property get vandalized.
  11. 11. Future of Sportsmanship The future of Sportsmanship holds more of the same. A lot of players are very respectful most of the time and it is understandable if they have a miscue once in awhile. Also, athletes are beginning to give more and more back to their communities. Fans, although, probably will never change as they have always been good and bad throughout sports history. There will always be fanatics that will be out to cause trouble and get drunk at public sports events.
  12. 12. Future of Sportsmanship Continued... I chose the picture below for a major reason. It represents a program by the NBA that provides communities with help. It has NBA players who continuously give back and this program has been on the rise. I believe more programs like these are in store for the future of sportsmanship.
