the Castel Sant'Angelo with the Vatican City.
The passage served as an escape route for Popes in case
of an attack.
Ponte Sant’Angelo
The Ponte Sant’Angelo is a bridge on the back of the Tiber
River that connects the Castel Sant’Angelo to the city.
it was used by Christian pilgrims as a passageway to St.
Peter’s Basilica.
During the 7ᵗʰ Century, the bridge was renamed the Ponte
Sant’Angelo.

The Mausoleum of Hadrian
The structure was built in the 2nd century AD by Emperor Hadrian
It was originally used to house the ashes of Hadrian, his wife Sabina and
his first adopted son Lucius Aelius,
Hadrian, probably planned the mausoleum himself, in collaboration with
his personal architect Demetrianus,
Demetrianus erected the bridge across the Timber called the Pons Aelius in
134 AD.
The bridge gave direct access from the city to the mausoleum
The mausoleum would house the earthly remains of the next four emperors of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, and the first three emperors of
the Severan dynasty,
it was covered with a mound of earth where a grove of cypress trees grew
A square tower or temple was surmounted by a statue of the Emperor Hadrian in the guise of Helios, the Greek god of the sun, driving a
quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses.
