Introduction to industrial robots
• An industrial robot is a robot system used
for manufacturing.
• Industrial robots are automated,
programmable and capable of movement on
three or more axis.
• Typical applications of robots include welding,
painting, assembly, pick and place for printed
circuit boards

inspection, and testing; all accomplished with
high endurance, speed, and precision.

Application of robot in manufacturing
industries
Today most robots are utilized as a part of assembling
and manufacturing operations; the applications can be
classified into three classes:
• Material handling
• Operations Processing and
• Assemble and inspection
Material handling
• It is further classified into two types :
1.Machine loading and unloading
2.Material transfer
We use material handling robots to transfer parts
from one machine to another.
Material handling is the combination of art and
science of:
• Moving
• Storing
• Protecting
• Controlling the material

Material handling means providing the
following
1. Right amount
2. of the right material
3. in the right condition
4. at the right place
5. in the right position
6. in the right sequence
7. in the right time
8. by the right method

2. Machine Loading And Unloading
In machine loading and unloading process, a robot will
be used to move the work parts to or from the
production machine. This application comes under the
category of material handling operations.
The machine loading and unloading application
includes the following three processes:
Machine loading
Machine unloading
Machine load and unload
Assembly
When it comes to putting parts together, assembly
line robots occupy a sweet spot between humans and
dedicated or “hard” automation. An assembly robot
moves faster and with greater precision than a
human.

Assembly tasks are typically those which
involve insertion of a peg into a hole. See
Figure

Robot find applications in assembly areas involving
1. screwing of studs and screws in threads holes
2. screwing and unscrewing of nuts
3. insertions of shafts in holes
4. insertion of electronics components in electric
assemblies.
5. assemblies of small electric motors , plugs,
switches, etc.
Inspection
• The inspection of robots will involve some of the
sensors to calculate the worth of a manufactured
part.
• It uses mechanical probe experiments to inspect
the finished parts.
• A robot arm with a vision camera can also be used
for non-destructive testing and 3D measurements.
• It can objectively identify and pinpoint defects or
faulty parts before they are packed or shipped.
Welding ….
• Robot Welding is a process of joining different
materials.
• The large bulk of materials that are welded are
metals and their alloys although welding is also
applied to the joining of other materials such as
thermoplastics.

Some common type of industrial robots
1- Articulated Industrial robots
2- Cartesian industrial robots
3-Cylindrical industrial robots
4- spherical/polar
5- Scara
Cartesian coordinate industrial robots
• Work on X, Y , X Directions
• There are three degree of freedom in linear motion
only.
• 3P Geometry
• application : Electronics
( ICs mounted on PCBs)
Cylindrical arm robot
• Work on two linear and one rotatory motion
• Well suited for round workspace
• Not rotate complete cycle
• R2P
• Geometry Cylindrical robots
operate within a cylindrical-
shaped work envelope.

• Palletising, Grinding process, assembly, handling
machine Tools.
• This type is one of the rarely used now a days
because most of
Its function, movement is now part of the SCARA
robot, this type was
Heavily used during the 80’s.
Spherical/polar
• It work on one linear and two rotary motion
• ie 2RP
• The axes form a polar coordinate system and create a
spherical-shaped work envelope.
• Application : Welding etc.,
extensively used in the car
Industry
Jointed arm (articulated)
• Work on only rotatory motion ie, 3R
• It just like human hands involving the function of
wrist , shoulder ,and elbow .
• Application: Food,Bakery,
Manufacturing (Palletizing)
Heavy Duty robot with 500 Kg
payload
Selective Compliance Articulated
Robot Arm(SCARA)
• Commonly used in assembly applications, this
selectively compliant arm for robotic assembly is
primarily cylindrical in design.
• It features two parallel joints that provide compliance
in one selected plane.
• Applications: Pick and place (usually in assembly
operations)
Sealant application, machine tool handling

Advantages of industrial robots
• Decreased Production Costs
• Shorter Cycle Times
• Improved Quality and Reliability
• Better Floor Space Utilization
• Reduced Waste
• Increased Safety
• Increased efficiency
• Long working hours
Disadvantages
• Initial cost increases
• Skilled workers only play with robots
• Unemployment increases

Introduction to industrial robots • An industrial robot is a robot system used for manufacturing. • Industrial robots are automated, programmable and capable of movement on three or more axis. • Typical applications of robots include welding, painting, assembly, pick and place for printed circuit boards
  • 4. Continued….. • Packaging and labelling, palletizing, product inspection, and testing; all accomplished with high endurance, speed, and precision.

Application of robots in different fields • Agriculture Industries • Automobile Industries • Construction industries • Entertainment industries • Health care: hospitals, patient-care, surgery , research, etc. • Law enforcement: surveillance, patrol, etc. • Manufacturing • Military ,demining, surveillance, attack, etc. • Mining, excavation, and exploration • Transportation: air, ground, rail, space, etc.

  • 7. Application of robot in manufacturing industries Today most robots are utilized as a part of assembling and manufacturing operations; the applications can be classified into three classes: • Material handling • Operations Processing and • Assemble and inspection
  • 8. Material handling • It is further classified into two types : 1.Machine loading and unloading 2.Material transfer We use material handling robots to transfer parts from one machine to another. Material handling is the combination of art and science of: • Moving • Storing • Protecting • Controlling the material
  • 9. Material handling……. Material handling means providing the following 1. Right amount 2. of the right material 3. in the right condition 4. at the right place 5. in the right position 6. in the right sequence 7. in the right time 8. by the right method
  • 10. Continued …. 2. Machine Loading And Unloading In machine loading and unloading process, a robot will be used to move the work parts to or from the production machine. This application comes under the category of material handling operations. The machine loading and unloading application includes the following three processes: Machine loading Machine unloading Machine load and unload
  • 11. Assembly When it comes to putting parts together, assembly line robots occupy a sweet spot between humans and dedicated or “hard” automation. An assembly robot moves faster and with greater precision than a human.
  • 12. Continued… Assembly tasks are typically those which involve insertion of a peg into a hole. See Figure

Continued… Robot find applications in assembly areas involving 1. screwing of studs and screws in threads holes 2. screwing and unscrewing of nuts 3. insertions of shafts in holes 4. insertion of electronics components in electric assemblies. 5. assemblies of small electric motors , plugs, switches, etc.
  • 14. Inspection • The inspection of robots will involve some of the sensors to calculate the worth of a manufactured part. • It uses mechanical probe experiments to inspect the finished parts. • A robot arm with a vision camera can also be used for non-destructive testing and 3D measurements. • It can objectively identify and pinpoint defects or faulty parts before they are packed or shipped.
  • 15. Welding …. • Robot Welding is a process of joining different materials. • The large bulk of materials that are welded are metals and their alloys although welding is also applied to the joining of other materials such as thermoplastics.
  • 16. Type of industrial robot Some common type of industrial robots 1- Articulated Industrial robots 2- Cartesian industrial robots 3-Cylindrical industrial robots 4- spherical/polar 5- Scara
  • 17. Cartesian coordinate industrial robots • Work on X, Y , X Directions • There are three degree of freedom in linear motion only. • 3P Geometry • application : Electronics ( ICs mounted on PCBs)
  • 18. Cylindrical arm robot • Work on two linear and one rotatory motion • Well suited for round workspace • Not rotate complete cycle • R2P • Geometry Cylindrical robots operate within a cylindrical- shaped work envelope.
  • 19. Continued….. Application: • Palletising, Grinding process, assembly, handling machine Tools. • This type is one of the rarely used now a days because most of Its function, movement is now part of the SCARA robot, this type was Heavily used during the 80’s.
  • 20. Spherical/polar • It work on one linear and two rotary motion • ie 2RP • The axes form a polar coordinate system and create a spherical-shaped work envelope. • Application : Welding etc., extensively used in the car Industry
  • 21. Jointed arm (articulated) • Work on only rotatory motion ie, 3R • It just like human hands involving the function of wrist , shoulder ,and elbow . • Application: Food,Bakery, Manufacturing (Palletizing) Heavy Duty robot with 500 Kg payload
  • 22. Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm(SCARA) • Commonly used in assembly applications, this selectively compliant arm for robotic assembly is primarily cylindrical in design. • It features two parallel joints that provide compliance in one selected plane. • Applications: Pick and place (usually in assembly operations) Sealant application, machine tool handling

  • 24. Advantages of industrial robots • Decreased Production Costs • Shorter Cycle Times • Improved Quality and Reliability • Better Floor Space Utilization • Reduced Waste • Increased Safety • Increased efficiency • Long working hours
  • 25. Disadvantages • Initial cost increases • Skilled workers only play with robots • Unemployment increases
