• Introduction
• Library in a knowledge society
• Library as a Knowledge Resource Center(KRC)
• Knowledge resource centers in CSIR laboratories in India
• Conclusion
INTRODUCTION
• Application of Information and Communication Technologies(ICTs) in
libraries have bought enormous changes in the scenario of library and
information services.
• In the knowledge society, libraries are pioneers in sustaining this society.
• Providing access to knowledge resources in a easy, affordable, round the
clock available with huge variety of content to its patrons.
• Concerned with preservation activities- preserving knowledge resources.
• Holdings of a library concerned with materials that contribute to
increase the knowledge circumference.
• Concerned at benefit of patrons and preservation, conservation and
acquisition of knowledge resources.
Library in a knowledge society
• Libraries promote reading which results in scholarly communication,
knowledge creation and enlightenment.
• Libraries provide an economically efficient method of organizing
information and knowledge that are relevant to our needs.
• Academic libraries keep journals, PhD theses, dissertations in its
holdings. They serve the purpose of an archival or a historical record
of knowledge.
LIBRARY AS A KNOWLEDGE
RESOURCE CENTRE
• Library since its inception has served the humanity in providing access
to information resources, an organization meant for providing reading
environment to common people. With time the process of
dissemination of information has changed.
• People live in knowledge society which is formed by metamorphosis
of information society with ICT as its driving force. Library began to
acquire knowledge resources in digital form.
• Demand and expectation of patrons of libraries changed with time as
all spheres of human life began to be dependent more on ICT so also
LICs need to be ICT compatible to meet these demands.
• Libraries began to share knowledge resources to its patrons in e-format
which are more economic, sharable(network compatible), cost-effective
with huge variety of content at least cost.
• In addition to these services libraries began to focus more on network
based services. Some of them are mentioned below:
a) Access to online databases
b) Access to full-text online e-journals
c) Internet Search Service
d) Content Page Service
e) E-mail alert service
f) CD-ROM search service
g) DDS
h) Virtual Reference Service(Ask-a-Librarian)
i) OPAC
j) Gateways
k) Portals
KNOWLEGDE RESOURCE CENTRES
(KRCs) in CSIR labs in India
• Libraries in CSIR labs support networking of knowledge and people to
maximum utilize the contents available with them in machine readable
form.
• Information and knowledge combined with technology not only helps in
matching users need but also helps in taking decisions in wide
perspective of global importance.
• In addition to services like OPAC, news clipping service, translation
service, Indexing and Abstracting service, DDS, reference and referral
service , number of KRC related projects have been initiated in these
Libraries
Some of them are:
i. National Knowledge Resource Centre (NKRC)
ii. Digital Information Resource Facility(DIRF)
iii. CSIR Knowledge Project
iv. Special Services- Digitization by NIO, Impact factor and citation
analysis( by CCMB and IHBT), Marketing of Information Products
and Services (by CFTRI, IIIM, IMTECH, NISCAIR, URDIP.)
• Keeping these in view CSIR renamed the libraries as knowledge
resource centers in 2008 motivated for providing information support to
technical and scientific staff of CSIR laboratories.
CONCLUSION
• Growth and development of libraries and application of ICTs have
renamed the traditional libraries through functioning, management and
services as “Knowledge and Resource Centers”, “Automated
Libraries”, “Hybrid Libraries”.
• University Libraries are trying their level best to provide unlimited e-
resources, with advantage of easy access(24X7), varieties of content
with minimum cost.
• Careful balance of traditional librarianship and technology is essential,
developing skills and competencies among LIS professionals and
going hand in hand with it so that libraries do not lack behind in any
aspect of ICT and providing world class library services to its patrons
in their capacity.
