Let’s Mark the Boundaries
I. Objectives:
1. Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts.
2. Determine the scientific basis for dividing the Lithospheric plate
II. Materials
- Map of earthquake distribution
- Map of active volcanoes around the world
- Map of mountain ranges around the world
- 2 pieces of plastic sheets used in plastic cover
- 2 marking pens two different colors
III. Procedure
A. Earthquake distribution
1. Study showing the earthquake distribution around the world. Trace the approximate locations of several
earthquake “clusters” using a marking pen on one of the plastic sheets.
Questions
1. How are earthquakes distributed on the map?
2. Where are they located?
3. Where are there no earthquake?
B. Active Volcanoes
Procedure
2. Study the map of active volcanoes
Questions
4. How are volcanoes distributed?
5. Where are they located?
6. Based on the map, mention a country that is unlikely to experience a volcanic eruption
Procedure:
3. On the second plastic sheet, sketch the approximate locations of several volcanoes using a marking pen.
4. Place the earthquake plastic sheet over the volcanoes plastic sheet
Question
7. Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes around the
world
C. Mountain Ranges
Procedure
5. Study the figure the orange portions indicate mountain ranges of the world
Question
8. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges of the world?
9. What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several plates?
