2. What is standard?

▪ A fire protection standard is a document with mandatory provisions to indicate
requirements for planning, installation and maintenance of fire extinguishing systems.

4. Indian Standard (IS)
▪ The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national Standards Body of India working
under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public
Distribution, Government of India.
▪ A series of Indian Standards covering fire safety of buildings in general principles of fire
grading details of construction, exit requirements and exposure hazards have been
formulated.

▪ The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an international nonprofit
organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to
fire, electrical and related hazards.
▪ NFPA delivers information & knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes &
standards, research, training, education.
▪ NFPA widely known as codes & standards organization. There 300 code & standards are
designed to minimize the risk & effect of fire by establishing criteria for building,
processing, design, service & installation around the world.

6. FM Global (FactoryMutual)
▪ FM Global is an American mutual insurance company, that specializes in loss prevention
services primarily to large corporations throughout the world in the Highly Protected
Risk (HPR) property insurance market sector.
▪ The company employs a non-traditional business model whereby risk and premiums are
determined by engineering analysis as opposed to historically based actuarial calculations.
▪ This business approach is centered on the belief that property losses can be prevented or
mitigated.
▪ FM Global engineering personnel regularly visit insured locations to evaluate hazards and

7. NBC (NationalBuildingCode)
▪ National Building Code of India covers the detailed guidelines for construction, maintenance
and fire safety of the structures.
▪ National Building Code of India is published by Bureau of Indian Standards and it is
recommendatory document.
▪ Guidelines were issued to the States to incorporate the recommendations of National
Building Code into their local building bylaws making the recommendations of National
Building Code of India as mandatory requirement.

8. Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
▪ Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is the largest and best known independent, not-for-
profit testing laboratory in the world. .
▪ UL conducts safety and quality tests on a broad range of products.
▪ The laboratory provides a full spectrum of conformity and quality assessment services to
manufacturers and other organizations.
▪ It also assists jurisdictional and provincial authorities, offers educational materials to
consumers, and works to strengthen safety systems around the world.
▪ It conducts tests on products in these areas to see whether they meet standards set by UL
engineers in conjunction with input from manufacturers and product users, but it will
also test products to see whether they meet standards set by outside entities.
▪ UL hands out one of three different designations to products that pass its tests: UL listed,
UL recognized, or UL certified.
9. Loss Prevention Control Board (LPCB)
▪ The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) is the leading international
Certification Body in the fields of security and fire protection.
▪ The LPCB approval process involves assessment and testing of products to ensure that
they meet quality standards set by a team of experts who may be regulators, insurers,
designers, manufacturers, installers, engineers and scientists.
▪ Approval of products is usually based on testing undertaken by the LPCB’s world-
renowned testing laboratories.
▪ This approval is maintained by regular audits to ensure that the product continues to
meet the approval criteria.
