Workshop outline:
Empowered schools enhance their capacity by
developing creative professional learning
communities. This interactive workshop looks
at how sustainable communities can be
developed within and between schools.
The session will start with a big picture
rationale around current professional
challenges and the importance of focusing
on teaching and learning. The session will
then move on to collaborative and powerful
professional learning including how to stimulate learning
conversations and grow leaders. Finally there will be exploration
of how to create the conditions to promote creative leadership.
The workshop will have a practical focus and include activities
linking and expanding the day’s experiences.
This workshop is open to individual school leaders or leadership
teams. Places are limited – register now.

2. Professor Louise Stoll
Louise is Visiting Professor at the Institute of Education, University of
London. Louise is also Visiting Professor at the University of Bath where,
until June 2003, she was Professor in Education and Director of the
Centre for Educational Leadership, Learning and Change. Louise is the
Past President of the International Congress for School Effectiveness
and School Improvement (ICSESI).
Previously Louise was a primary school teacher, researcher with Peter
Mortimore on the School Matters project, research director at The Halton
Board of Education in Ontario, and from 1992-1999 Co-ordinating
Director of the International School Effectiveness and Improvement
Centre at the Institute of Education, where she established the School
Improvement Network. Louise’s research and development work focuses
on school improvement, leadership and capacity for learning and
change.
Louise’s current and recent projects include:
• Creating and Sustaining Effective Professional Learning Communities
for England’s Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the
National College for School Leadership (National College, UK) and
the General Teaching Council of England
• helping the National College articulate its Key Areas of Leadership
Learning
• evaluating the KS3 (11-14 year olds) Strategy Pilot for the DfES
• creating a simulation for primary school networking for the Innovation
Unit (UK), DfES
• Raising Attainment in the Former Coalfield Areas for the DfES
• advising Rotterdam City Education Department (the Netherlands) on
its program for combating underachievement
• Effective School Improvement Project for the European Union, with
colleagues from eight countries.
Louise presents and consults in many countries.
Louise’s many publications include: It’s About Learning (and It’s About
Time) with Dean Fink and Lorna Earl (2003 - RoutledgeFalmer); No
Quick Fixes: Perspectives on Schools in Difficulty co-edited with Kate
Myers; and Changing Our Schools with Dean Fink.
