Hello everyone. How are we doing?
Welcome to the first-ever Storyworld Jam, here at the Hannah Maclure Centre. I’m going to be acting as the “compere” for this welcoming, going over some information and introducing our speakers for the evening.
Firstly, I would like to introduce you to the team who will be volunteering to make sure this event runs as smoothly as possible. If anything goes wrong, you know who to blame.
That’s me, up there.
We have Max, who you’ll be hearing from later as he will be announcing the themes for the event.
Gian and Lee are over there. These guys have been working with Max to design the event’s structure.
Last but not least, we have Louise who will be manning the security until the Union staff appear, so if you need to exit the building at any point, be sure to let her know.
I’m obligated to go over the boring-yet-important information.
There are no scheduled fire drills over the weekend, so if you hear the fire alarm you know it’s legit. The exits are the main stairwell, through the door to your right, and behind this curtain here.
Max and Louise are our qualified first-aiders, so if anyone requires medical attention, please alert them as soon as you can.
We have a social media handle for the event, which is #SWJ14. Using it helps us to promote you, and you’re helping us to promote and grow this event to bigger and better things. So please post as much as you can, let’s spread the word and show people how awesome this event is going to be.
If you read the email that was sent out last week, you’ll most likely know the programme, but I’ll just run through it pretty quickly.
In a moment, I am going to introduce our first guest speaker, Alice Rendell, followed by Max to set out the event’s themes. We’ll then make sure everyone has a team or know what they’re doing, and then the Storyworld Jam can begin! The Union closes at midnight tonight. What I would ask is that you gather anything you need before leaving for around five to midnight, just so that we don’t get a bollocking from Security downstairs.
The Union will be back open at 8am for the start of Day Two. We also want to offer a platform to pitch and discuss your ideas with everyone, and try and spark some creativity between disciplines, so for those who feel up to pitching their concepts for a brief thirty seconds then this will be your opportunity. We’ll then have a buffet provided to us by the Union catering staff at around five o’clock, which we aim to host as a networking session also, getting around and talking to people about their concepts again. We want to promote as much conversation amongst you as possible, and we’ve found that this greatly helps the creative process, so please feel comfortable and converse with your peers. The Union will again close at midnight, leading us on to Sunday.
The final day will open again at 8am, with a buffet provided. We’re looking to end the Jam at around 7pm, with the Showcase beginning around 7:30pm, or closer to 8pm, which will be held in the Sports Bar downstairs. And that’s all there really is to it!
Does anyone have any questions that they’d like to ask just now, or shall we crack on?
It is a privilege to welcome our first speaker. She’s relatively new to the Scottish game development community, so please be nice to her. The talk will be based on narrative design for transmedia projects, and to tell you about her experience and thoughts, please welcome Alice Rendell.
Thank you for that, Alice. I’m sure that you’ll be sticking around for a bit in case people have any further questions. Moving on, it’s time to launch the event properly. To tell us all about the storyworld concept and the themes for the event, put your hands together for Max Wrighton.
