2. INTRODUCTION LASCUAX CAVE PAINTINGS Most of lascauxcave paintings are situatedquite a distance awayfrom the entrance they are deep down to makeit more exciting.

3. PREHISTORIC ARTIFACTS The BASKET The basket was the most significant prehistoric artifactrecovered during an archeological survey of the monument (1981-1987).The basket was found in situ in a dry, protected environment (earth crack).

4. ANOTHER PREHISTORIC ARTIFACT THE VALCANIC BLUE BEAR ROCK In 1985, an artifact made from volcanic rock was unearthed at the Allan O. Kelly Archaeological Dig overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, California in San Diego County. Archaeologists noticed a 2.5" long by 1.5" piece of meta-volcanic rock that looked a lot like a bear. It was fashioned by California Indians around 7,000 to 8,000 years ago.

5. LASCAUX CAVE Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France famous for its Paleolithiccave paintings. The original caves are located near the village of Montignac, in the Dordognedépartement. They contain some of the best-known Upper Paleolithic art. These paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old. [1][2] They primarily consist of primitive images of large animals, most of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time. In 1979, Lascaux was added to the UNESCOWorld Heritage Sites list along with other prehistoric sites in the Vézère valley.[3The cave was discovered on September 12, 1940 by four teenagers, Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel, and Simon Coencas, as well as Marcel's dog, Robot.[4] The cave complex was opened to the public in 1948.]

7. ROCK ART PAINTINGS The term "rock art" appears in the published literature as early as the 1940s[1][2]. It has also been described as "rock carvings",[3] "rock drawings",[4] "rock engravings",[5] "rock inscriptions",[6] "rock paintings",[7] "rock pictures",[8] "rock records"[9] "rock sculptures.[10], [11]
