3. So the question becomes:
What can you do to stand out
from the rest?
4. No doubt there are many
things you can do to help make
yourself stand out from the rest.
Here are 3 that may work for you:
5. Tip #1
Research the company before you apply. Google
them, visit their website, check out their social sites.
Learn their mission statement and values.
Find out who will be screening applications and
conducting interviews. Personally address your cover
letter. Connect with them online.
Use the company’s language, and key words from their
posting, in your résumé and cover letter; tailor your
message to meet the company’s needs.
EXTRA TIP: It’s not about you, it’s about them.
6. Tip #2
Follow the employer’s application process but find
a way to stand out also. Here’s a few ideas:
If it’s an online application, consider mailing a printed
copy of your résumé.
Work your sphere of influence. Do you know anyone
who could introduce you? Or give you some guidance
about how to follow up or what the company is really
looking for?
Is the company social? “Like” their Facebook page,
follow their Tweets, enter their online contests, follow
their blog, engage with them online.
7. Tip #3
Prep your references. Don’t leave anything to chance
and let anyone be caught off guard. Make a phone call
or plan a personal visit to get them up to speed on the
company, the role you are applying for and why you
think you are qualified. They will appreciate this
information in order to be truly helpful.
EXTRA TIP: Design-wise, your references sheet
should match your résumé. Yes, you will need
printed copies.
