The APHA Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
Section was established in 1985 with the
mission to:
  • Develop, foster and advocate for sound
research, policy, and practice in the fields
       of ATOD epidemiology, prevention and
       treatment, and
  • Enhance communication concerning ATOD
issues among Section members and the
Section leaders, APHA members, and the
       broader health community.
About the ATOD Section
The section has over 700 members, presents over 30
scientific sessions at the annual meeting, and has become
a valuable source of expertise and current research for the
ATOD field.

Currently the ATOD Section leadership includes more than
30 volunteers who work to advance the Section’s mission
from a broad range of perspectives including: Annual
Meeting program development, advocacy, social media and
health communication, and a Student Poster Showcase and
awards to bring public health students into ATOD research
and practice. The ATOD Section also recognizes public
health excellence and contributions to the ATOD field with
the John Slade Memorial Advocacy Award, the Lifetime
Achievement Award, College Leadership, and Community
Leadership awards each year.

The ATOD Section members and leaders are committed to
continuing to build collaborative partnerships among public
health experts from many perspectives including research,
service, education, communication, and policy-making to
prevent ATOD problems.
