On July 23, 2010, the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas (UT-BEG) co-hosted a symposium on the Role of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in Accelerating the Deployment of Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). The motivation for the symposium lies with the convergence of two national energy priorities: enhancement of domestic oil production through increased tertiary recovery; establishment of large-scale CCS as an enabler for continued coal use in a future carbon-constrained world. These security and environmental goals can both be advanced by utilizing the carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from coal (and natural gas) combustion for EOR, but many questions remain about the efficacy and implementation of such a program at large scale. The symposium aimed to lay out the issues and to explore what might be an appropriate government role.

To reduce the environmental impacts of the aviation sector as air traffic grows steadily, the aviation industry has paid increasing attention to bio-based alternative jet fuels (AJFs), which may provide lower life-cycle petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than petroleum jet fuel. This study presents well-to-wake (WTWa) results for four emerging AJFs: ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) from corn and corn stover, and sugar-to-jet (STJ) from corn stover via both biological and catalytic conversion. Three H2 options for STJ via catalytic conversion are investigated: external H2 from natural gas (NG) steam methane reforming (SMR), In-situ H2 and H2 from biomass gasification. Results demonstrate that the feedstock is a key factor in the WTWa GHG emissions of ETJ: corn- and corn stover-based ETJ are estimated to produce WTWa GHG emissions that are 16% and 73%, respectively, less than those of petroleum jet. As for the STJ pathways, this study shows that STJ via biological conversion could generate WTWa GHG emissions 59% below those of petroleum jet. STJ via catalytic conversion could reduce the WTWa GHG emissions by 28% with H2 from NG SMR or 71% with H2 from biomass gasification than those of petroleum jet. Corn- and corn stover-based ETJ as well as corn-stover-based STJ show potentials to reduce WTWa GHG emissions compared to petroleum jet. On the other hand, ETJ offers unique opportunities to exploit extensive existing corn ethanol plants and infrastructure, and to provide a boost to staggering ethanol demand, which is largely being used as gasoline blendstock.

Natural gas obtained from boreholes in the form of free gas, as well as associated gas, primarily consists of hydrocarbons which include Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), gas imported through transnational pipelines, Coal Bed Methane (CBM) obtained from coal seams, etc. Energy demands have increased significantly with the development of civilization. Further, increased energy demands have augmented the reliance on fossil fuels like Coal and Crude Oil, especially that of developing countries. Also, increased dependence on a single source of energy poses a significant threat to the energy security and sustainability of the nation (Delgado, 2011). India, like other countries, continues to suffer from the consequences of the lockdowns and voluntary restrictions to combat the global pandemic-first with the nationwide lockdown of 2020 during the first wave of COVID-19 and now again with the regional lockdowns and self-imposed restrictions to battle the second wave of the virus. This has introduced a big factor of uncertainty in predictions of energy demand and annual GDP growth initially predicted till the period of 2040. By Peter Rose The relative contribution of Man's activities, as opposed to Nature's activities,,to the observed recent rises in Earth temperatures, is unresolved. In addition to the oft-noted inability of climate modeling to reproduce the documented recent past, a major shortcoming of contemporary climate studies is that they rest upon very short time spans, whereas climate change considered from a geological perspective encourages much less anxiety about the climate future of the world. If it turns out that most observed global warming is the result of natural causes, as seems increasingly likely, proposed voluntary economic initiatives by Western nations to limit CO2 emissions will constitute a serious and unnecessary economic wound, self-inflicted at the worst possible time. Sunspot cycles suggest that we are about to enter -- indeed may have already begun -- an extended period of global cooling. Recent unsavory revelations (“Climate Gate”) have cast doubt on thedependability of the science underpinning Anthropogenic Global Warming. Peter R. Rose (BS, MA, PhD, Geology, University of Texas at Austin) is a certified petroleum geologist who was Staff Geologist with Shell Oil Company; Chief, Oil and Gas Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey; and Chief Geologist and Director of Frontier Exploration for Energy Reserves Group, Inc. (now BHP Petroleum (Americas), Inc.). In 1980, he established his own independent oil and gas consulting firm, Telegraph Exploration, Inc. His clients include most major U.S. companies and prominent independents as well as many international firms and state oil companies. Dr. Rose has explored for oil and gas in most North American geological provinces and has published and lectured widely on U.S. resource assessment, basin analysis, play development, prospect evaluation, and risk and uncertainty in exploration. He has taught extensively at the professional level and was a 1985/1986 AAPG Distinguished Lecturer.
