39. Microfinance Brigades provides the educational, financial, and organizational resources needed to empower community leaders. Student volunteers receive training from internationally renowned microfinance institutions and then use this new knowledge to provide support to small farmers in need. At the end of the Brigade, students each grant a micro-loan to the community to provide a stepping stone for these farmers to escape the cycle of poverty and improve the quality of life for themselves and their families well into the future.

60. ABOUT.LOCATION.VIDEO. BRIGADES .FOLLOW-UP.SCHEDULE.LODGING.PROGRAM FEE.JOIN Most brigades include construction of each of the following four public health projects: concrete floors, water pilas, latrines, and ecostoves. Global Brigades, Inc. Copyright 2009 Global Brigades, Inc. Copyright 2009 Often homes in rural villages do not have a clean and secure place to store water. Water “pilas” allow for a convenient and sanitary storage unit saving families hundreds of hours per year walking long distances to a water source. Many preventive diseases are caused by unsanitary and unorganized waste disposal. Latrines provide a convenient and inexpensive solution near the home. Eco-stoves with chimneys limit the carbon and smoke that fills the home with harmful smoke and pollutants that cause many of the family’s respiratory illnesses. The eco-stoves also burn much more efficiently, limiting deforestation.
61. ABOUT.LOCATION.VIDEO. BRIGADES .FOLLOW-UP.SCHEDULE.LODGING.PROGRAM FEE.JOIN Along with the construction of public health projects, brigades also include education workshops. Global Brigades, Inc. Copyright 2009 Global Brigades, Inc. Copyright 2009 Kid's health education is a dynamic mix of songs, games, and interactive activities designed to teach simple but highly effective health promotion and disease prevention methods, such as handwashing and dental care. Adult and family health education first focuses on the importance, care, and maintenance of the construction projects and then secondly uses this as a jumping-off point to share other critical health concepts, such as treatment of potable drinking water.
62. ABOUT.LOCATION.VIDEO.BRIGADES. FOLLOW-UP .SCHEDULE.LODGING.PROGRAM FEE.JOIN To perpetuate the infrastructure projects, the Public Health (PH)Brigades directors in Honduras train identified community members to continue construction and maintenance between brigades. PH Brigades’ policy is to only do half of the homes in the community, with a predetermined agreement that the other community members will pay for and implement the construction of the other half. Medical Brigades are available in both Honduras and Panama. These statistics provide an overview of one of our average community partners.
Global Medical Brigades has developed relationships with 80 community partners. For every medical brigade club that is established one more village is able to receive care. GMB clubs systematically traveled to Central America so that each community receives a medical brigade every 3 to 4 months. This method has been very successful in improving a consistent access to health care for the villages for a healthier population. For example, in 2005 in any given community partner, an average brigade consisted of more than 800 patients. In 2009, in that same community, a brigade only needed to treat about 300. The decrease in number not only shows the improved overall community health, but also allows us to provide more thorough comprehensive care.
Location is typically a community school or religious dwelling Triage Notes: Triage: BP, Allergies, Weight, Main Complaints Temperature on babies and elderly Sugar on diabetics and elderly BP on anyone over 40 Basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful here for communication reasons and because some of the names may be unfamiliar. Consultation Notes: Doctors diagnose patients and prescribe appropriate prescriptions Students can either act as translators for the doctor or they may shadow the doctor. Both positions offers students a first hand experience in medicine. Doctors only treat cases within the abilities of the brigade. If further treatment is required, patients will be referred to Clίnica Santa Rosa de Lima. Dental Station Notes: Often patients will walk hours looking for dental care at a brigade. As such, we strongly encourage Medical Brigades to recruit Dentists and pre-dental students to supplement a Medical Brigade. They will approve the final product and answer any student questions. Receive prescriptions from patients throughout the day and fill accordingly, keeping families together When in doubt, go back to the medical professional who wrote the prescription and ask Make sure all patients thoroughly understand the directions for the medicines they are prescribed via translators

*Global Brigades is 100% student funded and led. We are not reliant on any outside donations or grants to perpetuate our programming. As such, we focus on empowering students with the tools and resources to solicit support for their individual brigades. The "sustainability expense" enables us to maintain offices in Honduras and Panama, hire full-time local directors, provide housing for our long-term volunteers and manage the relationships and health trends in the communities we serve year-round.

Business Brigades are available in Panama and Kiva Brigades are available in Honduras. These statistics provide an overview of one of our average community partners. DID YOU KNOW? Panama has the 4th highest wealth disparity in all of Latin America and 1st highest in all of Central America For 2007, 56.8% of the unemployed Hondurans have done up to elementary school. The relationship between education-income per capita in a household is $53 for someone who has had elementary school education, while if the head of the family has received a superior education the income can be up to $391. As of 2003, 49% of all Panamanians and 57% of all poor in Panama are citizens less than 20 years old increasing a dire need for more youth opportunity
Volunteers can participate in Kiva Brigades beginning March 2010. Contact Merrilee Chapin at merrilee@globalbrigades.org for brigade details.
