Tiffin University’s Application Process
1. Completed applications are processed and reviewed by the Admissions Committee (typically 5-7
business days)
2. If a student is admitted, the following documents will be mailed to the recruiter or student:
a. Student’s admission letter
b. I-20 application form
3. Recruiter should work with student to pay SEVIS fee and schedule visa appointment
4. Student schedules a visa interview at nearest U.S. embassy/consulate office

Minimum Requirements for Undergraduate Admission
1. Graduation from a recognized high school or equivalent, or graduation from a recognized
associate’s degree program, or currently attending a recognized undergraduate
associate’s/bachelor’s degree program.
2. For freshman applicants, GPA 2.25; for transfer applicants, GPA 2.0.
3. Satisfactory TOEFL score (500 PBT/61 iBT) or IELTS score 5.0 or iTEP score of 3.4.
*Applicants who are unable to meet the language proficiency standards or who do not have
proof of proficiency can receive a Conditional Acceptance, and attend our English Language
and American Culture (ELAC) program, which is our on‐campus English language institute.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
What Is The English as a Second Language Program?
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is designed to help international students achieve
English proficiency required by the degree program and expose the student to many facets of American
culture. The ESL program provides an all-around training of English-language skills in reading, listening,
speaking, and writing.
How Many Levels Are There In The ESL Program?
The ESL program consists of three levels:
Level 3: ESL 109/114/130/132/172, no regular classes
Level 2: ESL 102/104/106/112/171, no regular classes
Level 1: ESL 101/103/105/110/170, no regular classes
Why Does A Student Have To Complete The English as a Second Language Program At Tiffin
University?
Tiffin University requires all students whose native language is not English, and who do not submit an
acceptable English language proficiency test score, to take a battery of tests for seated courses in any
undergraduate or graduate program.
What Tests Are Required To Be Taken Upon Arrival?

3. TU Oral Interview:
a. Undergraduate students will be interviewed by the ESL director and/or a faculty
member from the school of their major.
b. Graduate students will be interviewed by the Dean of Graduate Studies and/or the
program chair of their degree program.
What If My English Language Score Met The University Requirements?
Students entering degree programs who have achieved university-stated scores on the TOEFL, IELTS,
MELAB, Cambridge tests, or any other English proficiency test accepted by the university will not take
the Accuplacer test. Undergraduates will take the integrated essay test to determine placement in the
appropriate section of ENG140 or ENG141. Graduate students will take the integrated essay, the oral
interview, and a plagiarism/citation quiz to confirm their ability to respond orally and in writing to the
kinds of integrative questions used in graduate classes. Graduate students who have sufficient TOEFL or
other scores, but who score below a 5 on the essay and/or below a 4.4 in the interview may be assigned
specific support work by the Graduate Dean and the Program Chair of their degree program.
What If I Do Not Submit An English Language Score?
Any student can be admitted to Tiffin University without an English language score. Graduate and
undergraduate students who do not have a score from an approved proficiency test will take the
Accuplacer, integrated essay, and oral interview to determine placement in the ESL program or degree
classes.
What If I Completed A Different English Language Program?
Students who have received certificates that indicate completion of English language training at other
English-speaking universities or language schools will not take the Accuplacer, but will take the
integrated essay and oral interview. Students who have taken English classes, but have not completed a
formal program and have no TOEFL, etc., will complete the entire battery of tests to determine
appropriate placement in classes. Graduate students who place into level 4 may have to take an
additional plagiarism/citation quiz to confirm their ability to research, cite, and respond orally and in
writing to the kinds of integrative questions used in graduate classes.
How Do I Pass The ESL Program?
Promotions from ESL levels will be based on the scores achieved in the TU battery of proficiency tests.
Students will be tested and placed upon arrival. When they are placed in ESL courses, they must pass
those courses in order to earn admission to be retested at the end of the semester. Students who do
not pass all of the ESL classes in their level will not be allowed to take the proficiency tests. They must
repeat the level. Promotions will not be granted simply because a student has attended class
consistently. Each student must demonstrate individual ability to read, write, and speak according to
the requirements for each ESL level. They must also demonstrate significant improvement in the online
test scores.
How Long Do I Have To Pass the ESL Program?
Students have 2 semesters to pass each level. Any student who fails level 1 has one more semester to
pass it. They may have two semesters to pass level 2, and another two semesters to complete level 3. It

is possible to complete the 3 levels in three consecutive semesters, but it is also possible to spend up to
six semesters achieving the level of proficiency necessary to succeed in undergraduate or graduate
classes. It is also possible to complete level 1 and show enough improvement to be admitted into
regular classes.
What Is The Cost Of The ESL Program?
Each semester in the ESL program is approximately $5,500. ESL courses are offered at a reduced rate
from degree courses. Therefore, students in the ESL program are not eligible for a scholarship.
What Happens If I Arrive Late To Campus?
International students must arrive by the last day to add classes (as stated in the Academic Bulletin).
Students who are able to be tested for English proficiency prior to the last day to add classes may enroll
in regular classes (if so placed according to the Proficiency Placement Grid). Students who do not arrive
in time to be tested before the last day to add classes will automatically be placed in ESL courses. Any
student arriving after the last day to add a class will be asked to return home and defer his/her
enrollment.

o Visual Arts
 For students interested in formal art studio training, or digitally based visual
communication. The Visual Arts Concentration provides you first with a solid
background in studio and art history. We then use a global thematic approach
to help develop your personal vocabulary and interpretive skills, helping you to
utilize these in contemporary applications and discover your own personal
voice.
o Music Industry
 With a Music Industry Concentration, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a
music industry professional. The Musical Arts Curriculum includes a core of
courses in music theory, practices, and historical development, combined with
applied musical study. These courses provide the common foundation of

practical training you’ll need for your successful entry into this fast-paced
field. With our Public Relations Concentration, you’ll learn the writing,
conceptual, and planning and strategy skills so valued by the Public Relations
profession.
o Journalism
 Do you have the desire and motivation to become a working journalist? In this
concentration, our faculty makes it real by teaching you the specific
investigative, writing and production skills necessary to work as professional
journalist. As a student in the Journalism Concentration, you’ll also learn the
tradition and responsibilities of professional journalists
o Electronic Media
 Tiffin University’s Electronic Media Concentration is designed for students
interested in creative or technical positions in film and television, or the
interactive electronic or print design industries. You’ll learn the visual

o Tiffin University’s History Major has been developed for the student interested in
pursuing graduate studies in History or related fields. Our History Education Major may
serve as an anchor for individuals seeking to teach social studies at a two-year
community college. As a History Major, you’ll have the opportunity to concentrate on

• General Science
o The General Science major is designed to provide the student with a broad-based
science curriculum with interdisciplinary components for students seeking...
1) certification to teach science at the middle school level, or
2) a broad base of content knowledge and laboratory skills in each of the major scientific

The Bachelor of Arts degree in General Science program is multi-disciplinary (requires
basic mastery of several sciences beyond the introductory level) and enables students to
develop skills that relate to a wide variety of topics, ideas, and experiences.
General Science is an appropriate major for students interested in health-related
careers, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical
technology. Combined with a second major/minor in English, General Science is an
excellent preparation for a writing career in science, technology, or natural history. In
the business world, General Science students can embark on careers in sales, health
care administrators, and production when combined with a major/minor in business
management or marketing.

 The goal of the athletic administration concentration is for students to gain
competency in supervising sports in the interscholastic, intercollegiate, and
professional arenas. Students who enroll in this concentration may seek
employment as coaches, athletic directors, academic coordinators, compliance
directors, team operation specialists, student-athlete service coordinators,

 The goal of the recreation and tourism concentration is for the students to have
demonstrated competency in the field of recreation at the city, county, state,
and national level. Students who enroll in this concentration may seek
employment in park and recreation settings, tourist destinations, country clubs,
fitness centers, cruise ships, hotels and resorts.
o Sports Marketing
 The goal of the sports marketing concentration is for the students to have
demonstrated competency in segmentation, product development, pricing,
licensing, sponsorship, contract administration, endorsements, and
communication channels such as advertising, sales promotion, and publicity as
they apply to private, municipal, and corporate agencies, retail businesses, sport
teams, or human resource firms.

• Corrections
o As a Tiffin University graduate with a major in Corrections, you will be the backbone of
the American Justice System. The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) Corrections Major is
designed for students who are interested in understanding and working with criminal
offenders. Through this major, you will be equipped to handle the dynamic nature of the
largest facet of the criminal justice system. The program focuses on the relationship of
the field of Corrections to the broader criminal justice system, as well as the evaluation
and treatment of offenders in community supervision, custodial, and community-based
facilities
• Cyber Defense and Information Security
o As a Tiffin University graduate with a major in Cyber-Defense and Information Security,
you will be part of the fastest-growing and most demanding aspect of the criminal
justice and national security system. The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) Cyber-
Defense and Information Security Major is designed for students who are interested
in managing and supporting information, computer, and network security
operations. Unlike many programs which focus on the technical aspects of computer
security, the TU major in Cyber-Defense and Information Security is focused on the
investigative, policy, and programmatic aspects of this career.
• Forensic Psychology
o Tiffin University’s Forensic Psychology major is designed for students who are interested
in examining the relationship between psychology and the criminal justice system. In
this program, you will develop knowledge and expertise in the evaluation and treatment
of offenders, victimology, crisis intervention, counseling, psychopathology, personality
assessment, and research methods.
• Forensic Science
o Students earning a Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) in Forensic Science learn the legal,
ethical, natural science, and laboratory skills necessary for effective professional careers
in forensic laboratories, police agencies, and/or to pursue graduate studies. You will also

be prepared to pursue advanced degrees in criminal justice, forensic science, law, allied
health, and medicine – to name just a few examples.
• Homeland Security/Terrorism
o The Tiffin University Homeland Security/Terrorism major is a relatively new
offering. We developed this Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) major in direct response
to the real security threats posed by transnational terrorist organizations. Protecting
the citizens of our nation is as real as it gets. This major is designed to provide you with
the opportunity to understand homeland security issues and challenges in context of
the new and evolving contemporary operating environment. While terrorism is
certainly a key emphasis, the major also gives you the opportunity to plan for and assess
real world situations from a first responder’s viewpoint.
• Government and National Security
o Tiffin University has developed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Government and
National Security to help meet the growing and demanding needs of our governing
agencies for motivated and well-educated graduates. Recruiters and other
representatives from the CIA, FBI, Department of Defense, Department of State, U.S.
Secret Service, and U.S. Marshals, among others, have come to TU to encourage our
graduating seniors to apply for permanent positions with their agencies. They look to

necessary to meet the many security challenges in the coming years.

o The law enforcement profession in the United States confronts some of the most
difficult problems and issues that any nation can experience as it provides public safety
services to our citizens. The Tiffin University Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) degree
with a major in Law Enforcement provides you with the necessary foundation for
successful employment and practice. At TU you will receive an innovative academic and
practical education in the law, the behavioral sciences, and the political process.

o Addictions Counseling
 The Addictions Counseling Concentration provides the clinical education in

psychology as a science, including additional instruction in hypothesis testing,
empirical methods, and the experimental areas of psychology. Students in this
concentration will complete and present an original psychological research

 The Applied-Human Services Concentration offers an applied psychological and
interdisciplinary understanding of personal and social problems often

Through its combination of coursework, internship, and self-directed study, this
program prepares students for immediate employment in a wide variety of

Master of Business Administration
• Finance
o The Finance concentration enables the student to build upon the solid foundation from
the course work in the MBA program and provides students with greater exposure to
economic and financial business practices. The finance courses provide an opportunity
for students to learn about local, national and international economies in cooperating
and competing markets. Students will explore performance of stocks, bonds,
commodities, and other types of investments. The program prepares students to work
in the field of financial management either independently or with a corporation, bank,
securities firm, non-profit organization or an investment firm.
• General Management
o The General Management Concentration is designed for a mid-career manager who is
interested in moving into general management from functional or operational
management. Students in the General Management Concentration have had successful
careers in marketing, accounting, human resources, or line operations, but now wish to
move into positions of authority that span many different functions.
• Healthcare Administration
o The MBA Healthcare Administration concentration is a program designed for working
professionals employed in the areas of education, child care, social services, health care
and business. The curriculum will focus on management systems, decision making tools,
new technologies, financial management, referral systems as well as current issues in
health law and ethics.
• Human Resource Management
o The Human Resource concentration enables the student to integrate the knowledge and
skills gained from the core coursework in the MBA program in order to address the
issues and challenges faced by today’s human resource management
professional. Students will benefit from exposure to theories and applications involved

in the International Business concentration learn how to think globally about the
business world. Students will broaden their awareness and understanding of the

knowledge and skills developed in other business courses, as well as to provide
proficiency in the international business areas of international trade, investment,
management, marketing and finance. They will learn how to manage multinational
businesses and turn local and national companies into international success stories. The
International Business concentration is designed for those students who wish to prepare
themselves to manage in businesses that cross national boundaries and to function in
the global business environment. Skills acquired in the major may be used in providing
management and professional expertise to business, government and not-for-profit
organizations.
• Leadership
o The Leadership Concentration is designed for the working professional employed across
a range of professions including education, health care, social services, church,
government, law enforcement, and business. The program centers upon those
characteristics that develop and promote leadership. Within the leadership framework,
the program stresses decision-making and managerial skills.
• Marketing
o The Marketing concentration provides students with the advanced knowledge in
marketing products and services. Students will explore the practices and techniques
commonly used to increase exposure and market positions. Challenges and benefits in
negotiating sponsorships and endorsements allow the students to develop
competencies to potentially maximize revenue for organizations and
individuals. Students will also be exposed to marketing in an international arena.
• Sports Management
o The Tiffin University Master of Business Administration (MBA) concentration in Sports
Management assists students in enhancing your managerial skills through the delivery
of techniques and best practices that integrate academic theory with contemporary
business applications in the sports industry. This is where the classroom meets the real
world of sports! This program places a premium on enhancing applied critical thinking
skills and ethical decision-making practices in a chosen sport industry segment. The

• Forensic Psychology
o The Forensic Psychology Concentration is offered in a four semester format, with the
addition of an intercession course or thesis option. This concentration is designed for

What is the English as a Second Language Program?
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to help international students
achieve English proficiency required by the degree program and expose the student to many
facets of American culture. The ESL program provides an all-around training of English-language
skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
How Many Levels are in the ESL Program?
The ESL program consists of three levels:

Why Does a Student Have to Complete the ESL Program At Tiffin University?
Tiffin University requires all students whose native language is not English, and who do not
submit an acceptable English language proficiency test score, to take a battery of tests for
seated courses in any undergraduate or graduate program.
Applicants from the following English-only countries do not need to prove English proficiency:
Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), Dominica, Grenada, Cayman

What If My English Language Score Met the University Requirements?
Students entering degree programs who have achieved university-stated scores (found in the
Academic Bulletin) on the TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, Cambridge tests, or any other English
proficiency test accepted by the university will not take the Accuplacer test.
Undergraduates will take the integrated essay test to determine their placement in ENG 140 or
ENG 141 and other credit courses.
Graduate students will take the integrated essay, the oral interview, and a plagiarism/citation
quiz to confirm their ability to research, cite, and respond orally and in writing to the kinds of
integrative questions used in graduate classes. Graduate students who have sufficient TOEFL or
other scores, but who score below a 3.5 on the essay and/or below a 4.4 in the interview will
enter the graduate bridge program. The Graduate Bridge program includes MGT 505/MGT
506/MGT 507 (MBA prerequisites for non-native English speakers who are unfamiliar with
American business and academic writing formats).
What If I Do Not Submit an English Language Score?
Any student can be admitted to Tiffin University without an English language score. Graduate
and undergraduate students who do not have a score from an approved proficiency test will
take the Accuplacer, integrated essay, and oral interview. Students who have received
certificates that indicate completion of English language training at other English-speaking
universities or language schools will not take the Accuplacer, but will take the integrated essay
and oral interview. Students who have taken English classes, but have not completed a formal
program and have no TOEFL, etc., will complete the entire battery of tests to determine
appropriate placement in classes. For graduate students, this includes an additional
plagiarism/citation quiz to confirm their ability to research, cite, and respond orally and in
writing to the kinds of integrative questions used in graduate classes..

How Do I Pass The ESL Program?
Promotions from ESL levels will be based on the scores achieved in the TU battery of proficiency
tests and assigned by the Proficiency Placement Grid. Students will be tested and placed upon
arrival. When they are placed in ESL courses, they must pass those courses in order to be
retested at the end of the semester. Students who do not pass all of the ESL classes in their
level will not be allowed to take the proficiency tests. They must repeat the level. Promotions
will not be granted simply because a student has attended class consistently. Each student
must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak according to the requirements for each
ESL level on the Proficiency Placement Grid, e.g. a student in level 1 must achieve scores on the
Accuplacer, essay, and oral interview that attain level 2 (or higher) in order to move to the next
level (or the level their scores indicate; a student may move from level 1 to level 3 or higher if
there is sufficient improvement). Once they have entered the ESL program, students will not be
allowed to move to the next level based on a more recent English proficiency test score
(TOEFLL, IELTS, etc.); they will still be expected to follow the aforementioned promotion policy.
Students must pass each level within two consecutive semesters. Students are allowed to
complete the 3 levels in three consecutive semesters, and they are allowed to enroll full-time in
regular classes upon completion of any level if they earned the scores defined in the Proficiency
Placement Grid.
ATTENTION GRADUATE STUDENTS: After you complete Level 3 of the English as a Second
Language (ESL) Program, you will be required to complete the Graduate Bridge Program. The
graduate bridge program is one semester in length and includes MGT 505/MGT 506/MGT 507.
It is designed to prepare non-English speaking students for graduate level coursework. The
three courses will cover important topics such as Fundamentals of Business Enterprise,
Fundamentals of Quantitative Business Methods, and Fundamentals of Graduate Business and
Research Writing. The total cost of the Graduate Bridge Program is $5,600 and is required.
What Is The Cost Of The ESL Program?
The ESL program tuition cost for each semester $5,500. There is also a charge of $25 per course
for a Language Lab Fee. The most you can possibly pay in any one semester for the program is
$5,625.

The reason for this varies from student to student, but is generally because a student lacks the

The Graduate Bridge Program takes one semester to complete. After the semester, students
begin their graduate degree coursework.

MGT506: Fundamentals of Quantitative Business Methods
This class is for MBA students whose undergraduate studies and/or experience need to be
supplemented by an additional course in the quantitative skills necessary to be successful

in the Tiffin University MBA program. The course provides an overview of Accounting,
Economics, Finance, Information Systems and Statistics. Students must receive a B or
better in order to move on in graduate program. Cannot be used to fulfill graduation

MGT507: Fundamentals of Graduate Business Research and Writing.
This course prepares students for whom English is a second language for the rigors of
graduate business education in an American institution. It is designed as a comprehensive
introduction to research writing at the graduate level for those ESL students who are
not proficient in academic research and documentation. The course will cover the
entire research process as it applies to various business disciplines while also further
immersing students in the English language. Students will be exposed to the various
types of research writing with an emphasis on the proper use of English grammar, along
with the proper academic formatting (APA documentation and a complete understanding
of all types of plagiarism). The course will also contain a practicum component in
which students participate in organizational visits, faculty mentoring, English language
immersion events, etc. to optimize the student’s skills level in successfully studying
American graduate business education. Students must receive a grade of “B” or higher
in this course to move into MBA program. If the students fails to pass MGT507 he or
she will be required to repeat the class. This course is to be taken with MGT505 and
MGT506.
