3. Process Stage 4
Evaluating Adaptation: Stakeholder Engagement
Monitoring, Evaluation and Feedback
After adaptations have been implemented they need to be further monitored and evaluated to
determine if the have delivered the intended benefits or in fact had negligible or even adverse
outcomes.
However if projects have been designed to reduce vulnerability to infrequent extreme events or
long-term risks from climate change, evaluating the effectiveness of the adaptation measures can
be problematic.
In this case the ease of implementation and costs should be considered along with any adverse
impacts and any immediate creation benefits.

4. Process Stage 4
Evaluating Adaptation: Stakeholder Engagement
Monitoring, Evaluation and Feedback
Maintain contact and feedback: On long-term projects it is important to maintain regular contact
with participants. People become cynical about engagement if decision makers do not
communicate how participants’ input and suggestions were taken into account. Try to ensure that
all parties receive something from participation in the engagement process.
Finally, engagement should be systematically evaluated. Evaluation of engagement is discussed in
more detail in the following section.
