Littering
Overview

In my presentation you are going to learn
about littering and how to prevent, help, and eliminating it.
Thesis

Littering is one of the biggest problems on our earth, but it is
easily preventable through laws and social change.
What is littering?
trash, such as paper, cans, and bottles,
that is left lying in an open or
public place
Effects
Litter can spread germs and cause environmental and health
problems.

Cigarette butts contain toxic chemicals that can end up in
storm drains and contaminate our water systems.
How Litter Affects Waterways

                                                                            Litter affects our waterways
                                                                               in many different ways
Careless dumping of hazardous waste seeps into surrounding soil
                                                                             and cause ground water pollution.

Littering is expensive

Houses for sale in littered neighborhoods usually don’t get the best
                            prices and owners lose money.

It kills and injures animals

Litter kills or injures animals. Many small animals crawl into
bottles or jars and get stuck and slowly starve to death.

It carries germs
Scabengers, such as rata are drawn to
lots of litter. Rats are carriers of many types of diseases that make
                                people ill.
It affects farmers
*Cattle and other animals can die from ingresting metal and other
substances such as ground up glass.

*Repairs to machinery jammed by trash, tires damaged by broken
bottles. means downtime and lost crops.

Laws

Did you know that littering can cost drivers and their
passengers a fine of $500 in the state of Arizona?
Roadway Fine

You can also be fined for an unsecured load. According to the
Arizona Department of Public Safety, violators could be
charged with a class two misdemeanor.

How to Prevent It
12 ways to prevent littering

   1. Set an example by not littering.

2. Pick up one piece of litter every day.

  3. Every week, pick up all the litter in
front of your house, including the street
4. Ask your neighbors to properly dispose of their trash.
Show them the difference between a clean area and an area
spoiled by litter, and stress why it’s important to put trash in
proper containers.
5. Make sure that your trash cans have lids that can be securely
attached. If you have curbside trash service, don’t put out unopened
containers or boxes filled with trash.
6. Carry a litter bag in your car. Ask local businesses to buy car litter bags and
distribute them to customers. Encourage them to print their names and an
environmental message on the bag.
7. If you or a member of your family is involved in a civic group,
scouting, or recreational sports program, encourage the group to
                  become involved in a cleanup.
8. Ask your neighbors and or friends to join you in cleaning
up one public area where litter has accumulated.
9. Find out how you can plant and maintain flowers along a
                           curb or sidewalk.
10. Ask business
owners to check their
dumpsters every
day to make sure
tops and side doors
are closed.
11. Ask business owners for cans in front of their business
                        with a sign

     12. If you own a construction or hauling business,
make sure your trucks are covered when transporting material
                     to and from sites.

  4. *The amount of money being spent picking up litter could be used in repairing roads or hiring more fireman and police
  5. * Animals get caught in plastic six pack rings, plastic bags, fishing line and a multitude of throwaways. *Birds that are stuck, can’t fly away from danger. Sometimes animals caught in six pack rings are strangled as they grow too big for the opening. *Animals get cut, infected and die. Every year, millions of birds, fish and animals die from litter.

  8. *the type of liter that takes up tje most space is food *some say that drive thru windows could also cause littering because it encourages people to eat in there cars which might make some people throw it outside rather than keeping it or eating inside and using a trash can.
  9. *the trash that takes the longest to decompose is styrofoam containers and plastic jugs *banana peels take the least amount of time but it still affects the earth *another thing that’s not in the chart is gum, im not sure how long it takes to decompose but gum being left in the ground it what causes the tiny black circles in the sidewalks and streets
  10. *there are 7 main causes of littering
  11. *motorists feel like since they’re not in a car and they don’t have anywhere to put the trash that they have more of a right to litter which isn’t true *as fast as they go i think they are perfectly capable to drive to a trash can
  12. *bicyclists have basically the same attitude as the motorists *since bicycles are more for working out most of the trash coming from them are water bottles *easy fix? bring a canteen or a reusable bottle
  13. *trucks definitely are a problem with their trash. *sometimes the back of the trucks are open and they dont even know it
  14. *if your going to put trash in a uncovered trash can or dumpster you might as well put it on the ground *86% of trash throw in un covered dumpsters end up on the ground from being knocked over or the wind.
  15. *this is the most popular *people are just lazy and put their trash where ever they feel like it and the truth is most trash men wont pick it up if its not put in a bag, unless it’s huge trash
  16. *construction sites are also well know for their trash *they leave everything on the ground: their food wrappers, papers and extrar materials that they didn’t use.
  17. *as you can see in the picture above a piece of trash is making it’s way out to the ground.
  18. *the fast food that you paid 5 dollars for can end up costing you 500 dollars when you toss it out the window.
  19. *The fines, plus court costs, can range from $460 to well over $1,000, depending on injuries.
  20. *Dumping waste, such as discarded trash, oil, appliances, scrap tires, furniture and other items, on private or public land and waterways is strictly prohibited by Ohio law *can result in fines of up to $100, depending upon the seriousness of the offense. For casual littering from motor vehicles, law enforcement officers can issue tickets *No operator or occupant of a vessel, regardless of intent, may discard or deposit litter in any Ohio waters. *Vehicles loaded with garbage, solid waste or other unsanitary materials that are susceptible to blowing or bouncing out, cannot be driven unless their contents are sufficiently covered.
  21. *this is the number you can call in arizona to report a person littering *there’s also a number to report an area that has litter

  23. *not putting food in a paper or plastic dispenser or vise versa *keeping a bag for trash in your car or outside your house, preferably with a lid *find a dumpster with a lid *putting things like napkin or a gum wrapper in your purse or pocket till you can find a trash can
  24. *some people think that one peice of trash doesnt make a difference but it makes a difference in both a good way and a bad way. *its bad because if ever single person in the world has that same attitude about it the that one peice of trash turns into 2 billion pieces of trash *it’s good because if everyone decides to pick up one piece of trash then that one piece of picked up trash turns into 2 nillion pieces of picked up trash (common sense) =)
  25. *story about my neighbors
  26. *going back to the whole thing about covered trash cans *it’s important to have trash cans with lids so things wont happen like if it’s knocked over or a windy day blows all the trash right back out.
  27. *just getting a regular Genuardi’s bag and just sticking it in your car will make a difference *it lessens the chances of you littering and every once in a while isn’t really a big deal.
  28. *most public and social clean-ups don’t start till the spring time but the truth is that littering happens no matter what season so getting involved is really important
  29. *even if it’s 2 or 3 people picking up a few pieces of trash in your free time will make all the difference
  30. *i made a slide show similar to my keynote slides to teach them *the kids volunteered to answer questions and solve problems related to littering *had an activity where they had to drag the different types of litter to the correct trash can
  31. *first we collected our bags and went to Bridgeport Park
