The Basilica of St. Francis was Started two years after the death of S. Francis, vicar of the Franciscan Order at the behest of Elijah and Cardinal Ugolino di Segni, the future Gregory IX. With the church also began construction of the Papal Palace. The Basilica, built on two floors above the other, was finished in 1253, but about a century later was added the Chapel of St. Catherine. Certainly the Basilica of St. Francis is one of the most precious monuments of Italy: is to see and discover in every small detail, jambs to exhibitions, from the floors to the magnificent and unique works painted by Giotto and Cimabue. The lower church has a nave divided into five spans supported by piers. In addition to numerous works, retains some tombs including those of the Queen of Cyprus, Philip, king of Jerusalem, Blasco Fernandez Duke of Spoleto. The Chapel of St. Catherine, erected by Gattapone nel1367, frescoes, stained glass and marble surfaces with images of saints. A fear guarded the tomb of Cardinal Albornoz, but was moved to Toledo. Under the central nave, in a crypt, is buried St. Francis. The nave, like the side chapels, is painted with depictions of the lives of the saints. The vault of the altar magggiore is divided into four wings, all painted by a follower of Giotto, called the Master of Sails. The right part of the cruise once painted by Cimabue, Giotto and Simone Martini. The left side contains frescoes of Piero and Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The Chapel of St. Martin has instead frescoes by Simone Martini. Admire the wooden apse and the choir vestry. The Upper Church, which is also divided into a nave with four bays wide cruising. There are magnificent frescoes by Cimabue, Giotto, James Towers, the Master of St. Cecilia and other contemporary artists. The importance of Giotto's cycle is given both by the beauty of the landscapes and paintings that reconstruct the environment of the time, for the first time giving a perspective and depth. An anticipation of later ages. These 28 scenes illustrating the life of St. Francis. Also important is the Treasury of the Basilica, in spite of the spoliation suffered, but always enriched by new donations, including that of Perkins, sixty works of the '300 and '400 . Giotto Among effrescate surfaces inside the Basilica of the cycle of Giotto are certainly the most important aspect, both from a religious aspect, and the ability that Giotto was transferred via the first appearance of the prospective scenes, giving the sense of space and depth to the truth to the expressions of the subjects. He moved to the legend of St. Francis trying to place the events of the current time, while maintaining the reality of the pictures, clothes, objects, architecture of the buildings. That was an anticipation of Giotto's artistic expression of all time. Cimabue Cimabue in the Basilica began operating in 1278. He was responsible for the decoration of the choir and transept of the upper church. Even Cimabue, Giotto, in his pictorial works abandon old patterns in his works by transferring an innovative look, it reinforces the expressions and the plasticity del'insieme representing the Stories of Saints Peter and Paul, The Stories of the Virgin, the four Evangelists and the Crucifixion in the upper church and, later, in the lower church of the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels and St. Francis. The earthquake of 26 September 1997 caused deep injury to the upper basilica, with the collapse of the ceiling in two places and causing extensive damage to the eardrum of the transept: 130 square feet of medieval frescoes were reduced into a thousand fragments. The basilica was closed for two years for restoration work. The earthquake caused the collapse of part of the frescoes attributed to Giotto and Cimabue young, the first span of time.
