6. In the next 50 years more than 300 grape varieties are expected to
disappear because of the Climate change.
The Old World boasts a huge diversity, with more than 1000 varieties all around Europe,
far more resilient than the 12 varieties that today are making up over 80 percent of the
wine market in many countries,

Hello I am Theo Kontogiannis, I am representing Agroknow an SME from Athens Greece, that serves for the last 10 yrs with state-of-the art tech, data services the agri-food sector.
I am here to talk to you about a project that speaks to my heart, a project that blends my 2 loves, data and viticulture.
But first of all let me introduce you to what we do.
We build bridges between …
We help scientists working on different disciplines of the agrifood research in global organisations to leverage the impact of their research.
And why is this important?
Because THESE are the people who will build the path towards a more sustainable future for our planet.
THESE are the people that will help us overcome climate change
THESE are the people that will fight for food security.
So if I may put our journey these last 10 yrs in 1 slide, that would be it.
This shows the transformation that is taking place these last 10 years for all the scientists out there.
From “How can I find more information, more data, more publications” to
“How I can take informed BALD decisions, in a faster and more efficient way”
We are close to a point of NO return.
I quote the Washington Post “…”
Why is this happening? I mean … we Do drink A LOT of wine, you will see that the demand is increasing.
There is a big relevant change in the world happening AS WE SPEAK.
Climate change is a reality and it affects viticulture and winemaking.
Despite the fact that Europe (or the “Old World” as we call it in winemaking) is extremely diverse, over 80% of the wine we drink is produced by 12 varieties.
Have YOU ever imagined what will happen if those varieties become extinct?
If we don’t find a way to produce wine with adaptable varieties to climate change, then we should forget wine as we know it today.
And we should also forget them.
Winemakers.
Because “…”
SO
How do we help people to change their future FOREVER?
BDG was created for exactly this purpose.
To serve all actors of the grape value chain
We are in the 1st year of this 3-y project and we ASPIRE to help these stakeholders overcome these huge barriers that I stressed earlier.
And HOW are we going to do this?I think I forgot to mention that BDG is an ICT project.
We don’t conduct research on the next grape varieties.
We are the people who empower scientists with powerful technology tools and support them in finding answers to these big questions.
And how are they going to reach promised land?
We have the power of technology for that.
“…”
Machine learning for training algorithms.
Sensors in the vineyard that help to collect tons of data, from different sites across EU.
AI that will help scientists take informed decisions.
The good thing is that we’re not alone.
We have on our side a strong alliance of agricultural research centers and universities along with high-tech players.
And we are proud that in this alliance we have two of the strongest players in viticultural research in Europe, who will take the most out of the project advancements.
The Beneficiary
Maritina will tell us how BDG tools are helping them to move fwd with her research.
The best thing that happened 1 year thus far
Is that we all look at the same page
Each part of the chain envisions a data-powered service that connects knowledge data and decisions
And will help European Viticulture overcome the great challenges ahead.
