CYTOKININ
Cytokinins are a class of plant growth substances
(phytohormones) that promote cell division in plant
root and shoots .
All cytokinins have basic adenine ring structure.
Cytokinins are mainly produced in roots,fruits,young
leaves and developing tissues.

BIOSYNTHESIS OF
CYTOKININ:
Biosynthesis of
cytokinin takes place by two
pathway:
1) iPMP
dependent pathway
2) iPMP indepe
ndent pathway
NOTE: In most plant cells iPMP
dependent pathway is the common
one.

ROLE OF
CYTOKININ:
• Promote bud or root
formation
• Delay senescence of leaves
• Promote expansion of dicot
cotyledons
• Promote movement of
nutrients
• Promote chloroplast
development
• Promote cell expansion.
