KANPEI EARTH Marathon
run and sail around the world
On December 17th, 2008, much-loved
Japanese TV comedian and ultra marathon
runner Hazama Kanpei set off from Osaka,
central Japan, to run and sail non-stop
around the world.
On the first leg of his trip, 59 years old
Kanpei ran 690 kilometers (430 miles) in
just 2 weeks, to reach the coast, east of
Tokyo. From there he boarded the 28 ft
yacht Aeolus with skipper Hiroyuki Hiki, and
the two of them sailed for 70 days across
the Pacific to Long Beach, California.
After just 2.5 days rest, Kanpei then set off
across the USA, to Chicago and then to
New York.
From New York he boards Aeolus again to
sail for Europe, runs north across western
Europe to Copenhagen to arrive by October
2nd, in time for the announcement of the
winning city in the bid for the 2016
Olympics.
From Copenhagen, Kanpei will head east
again, across eastern Europe and central
and eastern Asia, and back to Japan.
Besides being a huge personal challenge,
Kanpei is also the official ambassador for
the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Bid.

During his trip Kanpei has made numerous
live and pre-recorded TV, radio and
newspaper appearances, and he is very
comfortable with cameras and the press.

On December 17th 2008,
Japanese comedian Kanpei
Hazama set off from Japan to
run and sail non-stop around
the world.
He will run a total of around
36,000 km (22,350 miles),
covering approximately 50 km
(31 miles) every day, and taking
up to Two and a half years to
complete the journey.
Kanpei will be 60 yrs old in July
2009.
