2. Objectives
The first International Lighting Design Worlshop @Eme3 proposes an inmersive
experience in the development of a practical, hands-on lighting design project. The case
study offers varied and suggestive opportunties for the participants to work on several,
specific applications:
- On one hand, the architectural context of a former industrial building, a historical site that
has been renovated and turned into a Center for the Arts and Culture, the Fabra i Coats
textile complex, driven by the municipality of Barcelona.
- The specific needs of an ephemeral architectural intervention whose programme includes
workshops, talks and lectures, cultural and networking activities in the context of the
Eme3 International Architecture Festival (27-31st June).
- An exhibition space where architectural and social projects will be displayed as part of an
international call for projects, the Share It space, that will remain open to the public as a
temporary exhibition during the month of July.

5. This central, open air space between the exhibition space and the common facilities is
conceived as a urban activator. The ephemeral construction that is to be built at the Eme3
Plaza is the result of an open call for projects, and it will be announced in the few days.
The main activities here will be during the night, from noon until 1:00AM, when the festival
finishes its diary activities. Live music, performance events and film screenings are some
of the contents of the programme of this space.

6. The festival sessions during the day will take place mainly in the interior of the former
industrial facilities. Four days of interchange and debate, lectures and talks. The interior of
the building has been recently renovated and the lighting design in this space will create
an interplay between the restoration and the history of the building and its structure.
Daylight analysis and control will be fundamental in this case.
Following the activities in the auditorium, different scenes will be programmed using
control systems by our technological partners and sponsors.
" Access to the facilities, façade and outdoor lighting
Onced defined the main point of view of the Plaza, guided by the winning design, we
would be able to stablish an architectural “backdrop” for the activities, and lit it up in
consequence using outdoor projectors and equipment. The access to Fabra i Coats
Cultural facilities will be light up to communicate the event to the surrounding area. The
work in designing a “corporate lightscape” for the event will give opportunity to the
students to practice with the potential that light has as a means of communication.

8. This space has been partially renovated and will host the exhibition of the architectural and
social projects displayed at Eme3 2013 Edition. During the month of July, the exhibition will
remain open and the lighting design here will act in two aspects: daylight control and
installation design. Here is where the most creative side of the work of the participants will
play its part, with unconventional and experimental solutions.
Welcome!
What we propose is to bring an opportunity to live a practical experience in light planning,
based in a real and motivating case study. Many aspects of the work of a professional
lighting designer/planner are included in this project. Everyone is invited to join and enjoy
the different situations that this complex case study has to offer. No worries about
production issues, we’ve done this kind of things before... The workshop includes a lot of
hands-on practice and focuses in the playful, personal experience with light that will help
you reinforce your knowledge about how light really works in practice. We will bring the
time and space for this to happen, in an architectural context full of history (and future).
The “preview” sessions are open to everybody and will be live-streamed on the internet, so
participants would have a fundamental introduction to the characteristics of the project.
9. Lighting Equipment
The materials for the intervention will be provided by our sponsors and partners from the
lighting industry:
