Bringing interactive Flash support to DejaClick was a groundbreaking effort. These things are essentially embedded mini-applications running within their own separate process space and beyond the browser’s control or awareness. To make all of this work as you will see it today, we needed to: Record user interactions on an embedded browser object, even if the browser itself could not see or hear any of the mouse clicks or keyboarding Record in one operating system, say Windows, and playback on another like Linux, FreeBSD and SunOS Replay the activities even if the embedded object appears in full screen mode or is scrolled off the page Account for differences in replay speed, window size, object auto-sizing, or screen resolution and translate all of this between the computer doing the recording and the one doing the replaying The list of challenges was long and we have overcome them adding the usual DejaClick magic so it is easy. We have also introduced NEW Javascript custom scripting capabilities and some new FORM select editing.
Of course, just being a good steward of critical customer facing applications is going to have a positive impact on the business. But I’d like to address ROI against the Application Performance Management products that we are finding many customers are or were using internally. First, But…can you imagine trying to create those monitoring scripts in a tool like Mercury or IT-CAM’s Rational? I have been told by numerous customers that creating ONE good script can take 1 to 2 days if it’s even possible depending on how much client-side logic is a part of the application. One customer actually told me they were receiving a chargeback of 1-2 days of high-level engineering time each time a script needed to be updated – even worse – monitoring was not happening during that script development time.
