3. Show us what our
eyes can’t see.
"Photography is not all seeing in the
sense that the eye sees… Our vision is
in a constant state of flux, while the
camera captures and fixes forever a
single, isolated, condition of the
moment." —Edward Weston 1932
15. How do we view images?
•The bigger the image,
the more time people
take to look at it.
•Clean, clear faces in
images attract more
eye fixations.
• Multiple faces attract
more attention.
--Poynter Institute
54. Sharing
Socially
"People just love to look at pictures. That's the
killer app of all online social networks. Seventy
percent of all actions are related to viewing
pictures or viewing other people's profiles."
•Use pictures (of yourself) to strengthen your
online profile
•Show off how popular you are

Here’s what we’re going to do today:
Composition techniques
Equipment
Apps
Settings (if we have time)
Welcome -- Who are we Alex and Chantal
We have an ambitious plan! But please stop us if with questions and concerns
We have an ambitious plan! But please stop us if with questions and concerns
How Many Brought a Camera?
How many are DSLRs?
How many are Point and Shoots?
How many are Phones?
In a minute we’re going to divide up, for now, all stay here. Not sure which group? If you know rule of thirds, you’re in group A
Look at how many pics on GP site!
Think about where your eyes go first!
This is not a coincidence -- its what people respond to
Look at Trendland, Again totally saturated
This guy has a really funny website that has no decoration (I’m doing the same with my slide)
People can tell between real folks and models
Let people click for a bigger version
Informative Images of the product you’re selling work -- Fluff doesn’t
You probably start by taking snapshots
- Posed
- Everyone Looks at Camera
- Smile!
- Something behind you maybe
Watch what you put online -- I’ll pull it off and put it in my slideshow
Lets go beyond the snapshot to interrogate what we’re photographing
So lets talk through some new ways to think about it.
We can start by thinking about levels we shoot them from, and mix those up.
Guy walking backwards to get peoples feet in!
Get really close!
In general, even with
What about the girl on the right -- is this a mess up?
Camera Awareness
Lots of things we can photograph
Not just pictures of people. Also landscapes
But really, what’s the most interesting thing to look at? What do people engage with most?
This is a portrait -- vs Snapshot
Whats the same? -- Looking at Camera, Posed
Whats different? -- thoughtful expression, thoughtful composition
Eyetracking -- look where peoples eyes go first
When should I snap my picture? During action
We said take photos of people, but even better when they’re doin stuff.
Look for settings with actions
Or feeling stuff
Why is this picture more fun?
Because something genuine is happening.
Candid! -- Solicit what does Candid mean
Not acknow. the photographer, acting natural.
People forget about you after awhile
Or if they’re your family or friends they get used to you.
How does Sarah feel here?
People!!!
Whats the diff betwn portrait and snapshot
Has anyone heard of this?
Divide the canvas into thirds both ways.
How was positioned I when I took this?
Try putting your head down on your desk and closing the higher up eye. You can do that w the camera. Lying on the floor
The way you move your body around is important -- stay moving!
Kneeled Down
Look, my foot.
Or just put the camera on the ground
Why all this moving? To show us something our eyes don’t usually see!
Think about depth -- more than one element in the photo
Think about depth -- more than one element in the photo
Good example of commentary
What you can achieve with more photos
Think about framing
Look at professional photos, almost always many layers and stuff cut out of the frame.
Other secret tips
Not looking through the viewfinder.
This will start showing what eyes don’t usually see.
Don’t be shy! -- Its a good way to get over being shy
Make a plan for what you want to get, then push youself to get it.
How much do you spend on film? Nothing? So shoot a lot!
The way you shoot essays is very different than single photos
Diversity of angles, depth of shots, follow the story through time, represent different aspects of the story,
Example: Domestic servitude
Indian Laundry
Headscarfs
What do we think of when we see this
Its not just the image, its the context created by the words.
With this context we see the blues more darkly, its more somber
Framing — in the Kip Fullbeck example info from two sources, the photog and the subject both provided context and meaning
When is technology too much?
What can’t phones do? Well, a lot:
Low light, action, telephoto, go really wide, depth of field
But until you build those skills, simpler is sometimes better. What you have with you is impt

2:15: Break into Groups
Filtering is filtering. Much more likely your phone photos will need them.
A couple good resources for J photos
If you want to become a good photog, shoot a lot, but also, look a lot.

If you know rule of thirds, you’re in group A
Small group on 304 w/ Chantal
Big group in 302 w/ Alex
What do you notice about focus in the picture?
Thats what depth of field means
You can control it with the F Stop. Size of the little hole light goes through.
Bigger, more light, less depth of field
Don’t need to know why, just know it will make you look pro.
Compare these two. Which has a shallower “depth of field”
You can control it with the F Stop. Size of the little hole light goes through.
Bigger hole, more light, less depth of field. Don’t need to know why, just know it will make you look pro.
Lower F stop number or use the flower icon.
Also allows for low light shooting
Again here, showing something our eyes can’t see.
What shutter speed did I take this picture at? (Hint -- not on a tripod)
Answer: About 1/30 -- I could hold it steady, but the runners still blurred.
(They should have cameras out at this point) Breeze past this with the Advanced Group
These aren’t universal, but common
Stick with one brand and you’ll be able to carry over from camera to camera
(They should have cameras out at this point)
Go through changing the F stop and the Aperture
Shoot JPEGs.
File size (how many Megapixels. Shoot Largest on a cell phone, Smaller on a DSLR. Get some volunteers to tell you size (in pixels) of their settings.
Shoot JPGs
Go over how to change these
Refresher on what these mean
Another draw of photos (and of SN sites in general) is that they enable a form of voyeurism. In real life there is a strong norm against prying into other people's lives. But online enables "a very delicate way for me to pry into your life without really prying,"
How to share on Twitter?
Don’t just go take posed pics of each other,
Look for people!
Come back in :30 minutes
(It should be 3:00)
We have an ambitious plan! But please stop us if with questions and concerns
