MUSIC MAGAZINE SURVEY
ANALYSIS
HOW OFTEN DO YOU
BUY MUSIC
MAGAZINES?
This is the first question in my
survey and was answered by all the
people who took my survey. Half of
the people asked said that they
never buy music magazines so in
order to sell mine I will have to
make it appeal to the majority.
37.50% of the people asked said
they buy magazines every few
months whilst 12.50% said they buy
a magazine every month. My
magazine will be published monthly
as this makes the most sense as
whilst the majority never buy music
magazines the other said they do so
every few months or every month.
HOW MUCH IS THE MOST YOU
WOULD SPEND ON A MUSIC
MAGAZINE?
43.75% said that the most they
would spend on a magazine would
be £2. If I where to publish my
magazine every month it would
mean that it would cost about £4
as its not published as often. I
would include more articles and
interviews than a magazine that is
published every month. Even
though the majority of people
asked said that the most they
would spend is £2 if the magazine
is to be published monthly like the
majority of people who bought
music magazines said then the
magazine would cost in-between
£3 or £4 as there would be more
on offer than if it were a weekly
magazine.
HOW OLD ARE YOU?
81% of the people asked said that
they where between 16 and 20
years old. This means that when I
make my magazine I should aim it
at a younger audience as the
majority of people who answered
the survey and in-between 16
years of age and 20. The second
most popular option was under 16
years with 12.50% of those asked
choosing that option whilst 6.25%
of those asked where between 40
and 50.
WHAT IS YOUR
GENDER?
75% of the people who answered
the survey are female whilst 25% of
those asked where male. This wont
affect how I produce my magazine
much as music magazines tend not
to be aimed at either males
specifically or females specifically
so it shouldn’t really matter too
much about the gender of the
people who took the survey.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU
LISTEN TO?
37.50% of the people asked said that they listen to pop music the
most. When I make my magazine I wont do it on pop music
despite it being the most popular option its not one I know a lot
about. The face that pop music is the most popular makes sense
as the majority of those asked in the survey where between 16
and 20 years of age or younger than 16 and stereotypically the
younger generation enjoys pop music more than the older. The
second most popular answer with 25% of people asked choosing
it was Indie. The third most popular option was rock followed by
other then by classic rock. However on the responses for other
one of the answers isn’t really relevant so I will ignore that
response. Despite it being the least popular I will do my
magazine on classic rock as it links to a lot of other genres and
is the genre that I feel that I know most about.
WHAT ATTRACTS YOU
TO A MAGAZINE?46.67% of the people asked said that they where
interested in the band that is featured in the magazine
so in order to draw attention to my magazines cover
page I will make sure that the featured band is in the
centre and clearly visible. The second most popular
choices where genre of the magazine, posters and
other. In the other section the responses apply to
options that are already there and so can be ignored as
they aren’t helpful to my survey. In my magazine I will
have posters as my magazine will be aimed at a younger
audience as the majority if the people asked are
between 16 and 20 so posters will appeal to them more
than they would if the magazine was aimed at the older
generation. Articles and Freebies are the third most
popular choices with 6.67% of the people asked
choosing them. I will not include a freebie with my
magazine however I will include articles as they are vital
to the magazine.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT
FEATURE OF THE MUSIC
MAGAZINE?
80% of the people asked said that they
thought the most important part of the
magazine is the interviews with bands.
Interviews with bands are a fairly
important element of a music magazine
so I will include them anyway. The second
option chosen with 20% of the people
choosing it is the pictures used
throughout. Even though they weren’t the
most important feature according to the
survey I will still include articles, posters
and competitions as they help inform the
reader and keep them interested. I will
include posters as my magazine will be
aimed at a younger audience.
HOW DO YOU LISTEN
TO MUSIC?
Unlike the other questions in the survey this
one was a multiple choice and so I can get a
broader idea of how the people who
answered listen to music. The most popular
option was YouTube with 81.82% of people
choosing it and the second most popular
option was Spotify or other music
downloader sites with 54.55% of the people
asked choosing it. This shows that as the
majority of people asked where between 16
years and 20 that the younger generation
listen to music online instead of through the
radio. I will use this when I make my
magazine so that I can make the magazine
more appealing to the audience. CDs and
Vinyl where the third most popular choices
with 27.27% of people choosing them and
radio and tv being the least popular ways
with just 9.09% of people who took the
survey saying they listened to music this way.
WHAT KIND MUSIC MAGAZINE DO
YOU MOST OFTEN READ?
5 of the people who took the survey
skipped the question. This is probably
because they don’t know many of the
magazines listed. 45.45% of people
asked said that they read NME the most
often. NME is usually associated with
pop music and as pop music was the
most popular choice when asked what
music people listen to the most. The
second most popular choice was no
music magazines and the third choice
was Q. Again Q is associated with pop
and modern music which makes sense
as pop was the most popular genre
chosen. The fourth choice was
KERRANG! With 18.18% of people
choosing it.
