"Transformational leaders have a vision of the future of the organization, can effectively
communicate that vision to followers, and are able to get them to understand the importance
of its attainment."
While serving as a professor, I had the opportunity to collaborate with teachers in forming
strategic plans to transform schools. Some of the plans consist of teams with expertise in
strategy and execution.
Strategy relates to the way to operate different systems, one of the system approaches that
was utilized is Data seeking evidence. In this approach, each student’s data was analyzed, and
an individual plan was formed by each individual teacher. If a student was deficient in math,
then the reading teacher and math teacher would operate a plan to implement math with
reading (vertical alignment). Likewise, if a student was deficient in all subjects, the reading
teacher would lead the discussion as to how to implement reading into each subject. The
focus is higher level thinking questions and continuous monitoring and adjusting.

Christian Sci-Fi Night is Author's Ministry
Minnesota Author/Professor Jason William Karpf Combines Christianity and Science Fiction in
Outreach, From Teens to Seniors
Ask a roomful of Christians: “How many of you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe?” “How many
are Star Wars fans?” Hands go up, from teens to seniors. Sheepish grins turn confident with the
revelation: “Scripture and science fiction teach the same lesson. Playing God leads to trouble.”
Minnesota author Jason William Karpf leads “Christian Sci-Fi Night with Professor K,” a live
watch party of classic and current science fiction, discussed from a Christian perspective. He
writes Christian sci-fi, a subgenre that blends tropes like futuristic tech, time travel, and space
adventure with godly themes and characters who actively practice their faith. Karpf also seeks
biblical truths in secular sci-fi, which inspired him to create “Christian Sci-Fi Night” for churches,
Christian schools, and bible study groups.
“The Church talks about meeting people where they are—physically, culturally, emotionally,”
Karpf says. “Fifty years ago, musicians like Larry Norman brought a generation to Jesus by
integrating the rock and pop they loved into Christian music. I am taking a similar approach by
combining science fiction with a Christian worldview.”
Karpf brings diverse skills and experiences to “Christian Sci-Fi Night”: professor at Christian
universities, child actor on vintage TV shows like “Bonanza,” four-time Jeopardy champ. His
published works include novels The Deliverer and Brimstone 1 and the short story “Basilica
Obscura,” a Realm Award finalist.
Jason William Karpf is available for interviews about his ministry, “Christian Sci-Fi Night.” He
can discuss innovative approaches to Christian teaching and how to find biblical truths in
science fiction and other popular culture.

The only daughter of our late Elvis Presley-Lisa Marie Presley, passed away at the age of fifty-four.
Presley made a public appearance at the Golden Globes. Lisa is survived by her mother Priscilla and her
daughters Riley Keough and twins Harper and Finley Lockwood.
Back in May of 2022, I had the opportunity to visit the Elvis Presley estate. If you are in Tennessee.
Graceland is the place that tourist should visit. The late Lisa Marie Presley own the beautiful place.
When entering the estate there is over 120 acres commemorating the late Elvis Presley. I suspect within
those acres; the late Lisa Presley will also be remembered. In addition to enjoying all of Elvis
memorabilia, guests can stay at Graceland’s AAA Four Diamond resort hotel with nice beds, comfortable
settings, and a great place of relaxation.
An attraction that I would like to see is the new exhibit-The Making of Elvis which celebrates the new
Elvis movie! If you can , please donate to the Elis Presley Charitable
foundation which provides scholarships to students in Memphis entering music, film, television, and

BIRTHDAYS-PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE
I could not develop a newsletter on my father’s birthday without at least acknowledging that today is
Mr. Alfred Earl Love’s birthday. As I listen to many of the stories and illustrations, our father was
extremely outgoing and well known for his skills in baseball! When I reflect, I can hear him saying,
“Life is what you make it!” It is not a noun, verb or adjective, it is life”. Some people are in the land of
living, but not living. Some people are here and would rather not be, that is what we call a problem. If
one is here and don’t want to be, that is a time to reflect and get some type of assistance. Life is good
and what you make of it depends on YOU. Life does not depend on others, it is you! Once YOU
understand that YOU can choose to live or be in the land and not living, life will be better for YOU. I
appreciate the many wishes, flowers, and thoughts, but what I appreciate is the joy and happiness that I
see in people who I have created, yep, my girls! Yes, it is my birthday, but it is really a time to reflect and
live beyond what you ever imagined. If one is asked to go an extra mile, I often ask what if they are
unable to? If you are unable to go an extra mile for any reason, try! Life is about trying and then
understanding how to reach what you expect!
Historically, today is Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. Personally, I never met Dr. King, but I had the
opportunity to meet his daughter (Late Yolanda King) and wife (Late Coretta Scott King) during my
lifetime. First off, I appreciate the Dr. King Holiday, but most importantly, I utilize that time to reflect on
how I can become a more effective leader, entrepreneur, family member, Christian and timekeeper. As
a result of seeking, I have been invited to the Leadership and Equity online conference. I believe to
facilitate change; one must understand the concept of Change Agent. A Change Agent understands how
to think differently, be different and move in the RIGHT direction.
Within the generations that have surpassed many, there is a lack of communication. Many people reach
for the wrong items to solve issues when the need for communication is a possibility. No one really
understand possibilities until one seek to understand. As a nation and body of people, no one has
reached this Promise Land. It appears everyone is still in the land of milk and honey, but the milk and
honey are not utilized in a way that embrace one’s thinking or actions. When one think of a land of milk,
one should live within the land thinking pure which means void of any ill concepts. Although ill emotions
and thinking occurs, the need to find a possibility to solve the issue should be readily available. As I read
the newspaper and watch some television, many of our young people are still falling victims to society of
violence or a misunderstanding or a problem that was never resolved. The question becomes to the
young people, “Where is the milk?” Unfortunately, there is no milk because people are not willing to
reprogram their minds daily. The mind builds and builds and eventually the thoughts within one’s mind
explodes into an action that could have a lasting negative impression. There should be measures of how
to reprogram the mind and form pure thoughts daily. Each day should be new, but what I have
discovered is the mind builds and it does for each person, what one selects to do with the accumulation
depends on the person! One can speak of honey which should be sweet, but nothing within the world to
a mind that is full of impurities is sweet, every aspect is bitter. How can one create a more realistic
approach to the real land of milk and honey? The only way to create a culture of milk and honey is to
inform, transform and recreate. We inform through knowledge building, but it must begin at a very
young age. Many aspects of life are taught as destruction is occurring, which ultimately makes it too
late, at least for those living in the microwave world. Secondly, transformation can only happen with
habit. Each day is a new day, but in the mind of those who are bitter, each day is another day that
continues to build until a negative action occurs. To transform, one must communicate and address
immediately. Finally, the notion of recreation is inevitable. Everyone is not an artist, but everyone can
have expectations. Expectations of how one will interact, live, and develop within the world. As far as
the eye can see with some of the victims who have fallen, I realize that many are living aimlessly in the
world without direction, expectations, and order. As a result, we are not living up to the dream of unity,
we are living in division and war. So, what is the solution to the bitterness within the land? The solution
to every problem is prayer and looking at oneself and transforming thinking and expectations for daily
living!

Not Sleeping Well at Night? Try Getting Some Sunshine During the
Day: Study
By Matthew Wilson
Have you found yourself feeling more drowsy and tired lately? Are you both hitting the
hay later and wanting to stay in bed longer? Well, you may need to go outside more
frequently, shake off those winter blues, and soak in some sunshine to sleep better.
A recent study, published in the Journal of Pineal Research, made a surprising discovery:
People are more likely to go to bed later and get up later in the wintertime. Researchers
studied 507 University of Washington undergraduates from 2015 to 2018, finding that
they were on average going to sleep and waking up around 30 minutes later during the
cold months. This surprised researchers who figured students would go to bed later in the
summer when daylight saving time is in effect.
It turns out the lack of sunlight in the winter could be impacting people’s circadian
rhythms and pushing them back. At least that’s what researchers in the sleep study have
hypothesized. For the uninitiated, a circadian rhythm is a natural internal process that
decides an individual’s sleep schedule, among other things, according to the National
Institute of General Medical Sciences. It can be affected by both light and darkness, so
much so that the CDC suggests dimming artificial light and darkening your room for a
better night’s sleep.
But according to the study, researchers found the loss of natural light during the winter
may have pushed back the students’ circadian rhythms by up to 30 minutes.
RELATED: Sleeping Soundly: Scientists Find a New Way to Reduce Recurring
Nightmares
In an interview with the University of Washington News, researcher and author Horacio
de la Iglesia said, “If you do not get enough exposure to light during the day when the
sun is out, that ‘delays’ your clock and pushes back the onset of sleep at night.”
So based on the study, researchers determined that sunshine during the day played a
greater role than artificial lights at night in determining when a person goes to sleep.
Every hour of daylight moved up the students’ bedtime by 30 minutes. Meanwhile,
artificial light had the opposite effect of delaying sleep by 15 minutes.
While there’s more research to be done, one can take away some valuable tips from this
study. If you find yourself continuously staying up later, try going outside more
throughout the day and spending time in the sun. It’s something that dogs have long
realized, explaining why man’s best friend loves to sunbathe, according to PetKeen.
Sunlight helps regulate their circadian rhythm. Even on an overcast day, researchers
determined that sunshine still has the same effect. You can also try to minimize the
amount of artificial light in your life in the evening hours.
So, goodnight and pleasant dreams.
Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.
Day: All About the History — and
Importance — of the Federal Holiday
AUTHOR Julia Diddy
In the United States, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that takes
place annually on the third Monday in January. It celebrates the January 15
birthday — and more broadly, the life and achievements — of the civil rights
leader. For those who are not fully familiar with the importance and necessity
of the celebration, here is a brief history behind the holiday.
King is one of the most prominent figures of the civil rights movement, which
took place from the 1950s to 1960s. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, the Baptist
minister and activist made it his mission to advocate for a nonviolent end to
racial segregation. Some of his most influential achievements included
leading the 1963 March on Washington, advocating for the passage of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964, being awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964,
and advocating for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was assassinated by
James Earl Ray a few years later, on April 4, 1968.
Following King’s assassination, per Britannica, there was a call to declare his
birthday a national holiday, and legislation to support this endeavor was
introduced in Congress that same year. Unfortunately, racial prejudice and
politically motivated objections would result in a delay of the federal
designation for another 15 years.
As detailed at History.com, former democratic Congressman John Conyers
was the first to call for a holiday honoring King. Four days after King’s
assassination, on the floor of Congress, Conyers — one of the only Black
members of Congress at the time — made his plea, to no avail. However,
Conyers’ unwavering commitment to the cause over the next 15 years would
play a crucial role in the eventual acceptance of the move to declare MLK
Day a national holiday. As described by historian Don Wolfensberger,
“Conyers would persist year after year, Congress after Congress, in
introducing the same bill again and again, gathering co-sponsors along the
way, until his persistence finally paid off.”
Representative John ConyersBettmann / Contributor / Getty Images
Conyers recruited the Congressional Black Caucus — “of which he was a
founding member,” History.com reported — to join the fight. The CBC
supported Conyers’ efforts in reintroducing the bill, year after year, and
advocated for support within their constituent communities. By the early
1980s, the CBC had collected 6 million signatures in support of a federal
holiday. Stevie Wonder’s song “Happy Birthday,” an ode to King, became a hit
and further increased public awareness and support of the cause.
In 1983, during President Ronald Regan’s administration, the bill advocating for
the designation of MLK Day as a federal holiday officially passed. According
to Time magazine, Regan was for some time reluctant to throw his support
behind the idea, having harbored “longstanding objections that this would
open the door to many other groups seeking similar holidays.” At the time,
President George Washington was the only individual figure whose birthday
was designated a national holiday. However, Reagan eventually ceded to the
ever-mounting support for the measure. In 1986, the first national Martin
Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed.
Resistance to this persisted, though, particularly in several Southern states
that opted to make their displeasure known by instead celebrating the day in
honor of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that
every state officially observed MLK Day, underscoring the fact that support of
equal rights remains, sadly, an often-divisive subject.
Dr. Clayborne Carson, centennial professor of history, emeritus, at Stanford
University and the founding director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research
and Education Institute, cites the holiday as being important inspiration and a
crucial reminder of what is possible when advocating for mass social change.
“If you put someone on a pedestal, [then] you can’t really be like
them,” Carson shared with Time in 2015. “But if you realize that he was a
human being just like the rest of us, who was caught up in a great movement
and did extraordinary things, then people begin to understand that they can
do extraordinary things, too.”
Dr. Love’s Message to the Youth
One of the most important aspects of life that
one should remember is one cannot change
something that has a permanent impression.
Before you act, think. If you have any suspicion
that your next move could drastically impact
your life in a negative way, do not react,
transform your mind! In researching youth of
today, I have come to the realization that
communication is non-verbal. What I mean by
non-verbal is one communicate through fighting
or committing some act that will greatly affect
your freedom and your life. My advice is to
remain focused, read one scripture per day. The
material things that you may believe you can get
by taking short cuts, those things will be added
unto you by God. Everything one need is
through prayer and supplication. Do not steal,
do not take one’s life, including your own and
do not commit to something that will change or
alter your life. The Soap Opera, One Life to
Live is correct, everyone receives one life, and it
is important to protect it through clean living. In
addition, the pranks that some of you pull on
each other, think it over carefully because it
could be a prank gone wrong. To sum this
advice up, “Live with purpose and live within
the confines of the norms of laws and
expectations.” Thinking that life has short cuts,
it doesn’t. Thinking that one moment cannot
alter life, it can. Live a life that is free from
danger and turn to communication and seek to
find some type of understanding.

Bills defeat Dolphins in Wild Card
matchup with Damar Hamlin
‘supporting from home’
By Fiifi Frimpong
New York Daily News

The Buffalo Bills continued their emotional season with a win against the Miami
Dolphins in an AFC Wild Card matchup at Highmark Stadium on Sunday as Damar
Hamlin watched from home, days after being released from the hospital.
“My heart is with my guys as they compete today!” Hamlin wrote on Twitter before
opening kickoff. “Supporting from home as I focus on my recovery. Nothing I want
more than to be out there with them! LFG”

The No. 2 seed Bills defeated No. 7 seed Dolphins, 34-31, in a game that was closer
than expected. The Bills entered Sunday 14-point favorites with the Dolphins without
starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has been in concussion protocol since Dec.
26. Skylar Thompson got the start in place of Tagovailoa. Thompson went 18-for-45
for 220 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions.
The Wild Card matchup comes nearly two weeks after Hamlin suffered a
cardiac arrest in a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati
Bengals on Jan. 2. Less than 10 days from suffering the horrifying incident,
Hamlin was discharged from a Buffalo-area hospital and continued his rehab
at home.
Like last week’s season-finale win against the Patriots, Hamlin live-tweeted the game.
He praised his teammates who scored touchdowns throughout the afternoon. After
Bills running back James Cook scored a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the first
quarter, Hamlin gave his teammate a nickname: “Chef James.”
The playoff win comes a day after Hamlin visited his teammates at the team
facility, according to an ESPN report. Bills linebacker Matt Milano posted a photo of
Hamlin on his Instagram story taken at the team’s facility.
“I saw Damar today & bawled my eyes out! What a miracle to see him walking,” Brooke
Kromer, daughter of Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer tweeted Saturday.

  • 1. LOVE NEWS Education EDUCATION "Transformational leaders have a vision of the future of the organization, can effectively communicate that vision to followers, and are able to get them to understand the importance of its attainment." While serving as a professor, I had the opportunity to collaborate with teachers in forming strategic plans to transform schools. Some of the plans consist of teams with expertise in strategy and execution. Strategy relates to the way to operate different systems, one of the system approaches that was utilized is Data seeking evidence. In this approach, each student’s data was analyzed, and an individual plan was formed by each individual teacher. If a student was deficient in math, then the reading teacher and math teacher would operate a plan to implement math with reading (vertical alignment). Likewise, if a student was deficient in all subjects, the reading teacher would lead the discussion as to how to implement reading into each subject. The focus is higher level thinking questions and continuous monitoring and adjusting.

CONNECT ON: BLOGTALKRADIO.COM/FREDALOVE SHOW OF THE WEEK Christian Sci-Fi Night is Author's Ministry Minnesota Author/Professor Jason William Karpf Combines Christianity and Science Fiction in Outreach, From Teens to Seniors Ask a roomful of Christians: “How many of you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe?” “How many are Star Wars fans?” Hands go up, from teens to seniors. Sheepish grins turn confident with the revelation: “Scripture and science fiction teach the same lesson. Playing God leads to trouble.” Minnesota author Jason William Karpf leads “Christian Sci-Fi Night with Professor K,” a live watch party of classic and current science fiction, discussed from a Christian perspective. He writes Christian sci-fi, a subgenre that blends tropes like futuristic tech, time travel, and space adventure with godly themes and characters who actively practice their faith. Karpf also seeks biblical truths in secular sci-fi, which inspired him to create “Christian Sci-Fi Night” for churches, Christian schools, and bible study groups. “The Church talks about meeting people where they are—physically, culturally, emotionally,” Karpf says. “Fifty years ago, musicians like Larry Norman brought a generation to Jesus by integrating the rock and pop they loved into Christian music. I am taking a similar approach by combining science fiction with a Christian worldview.” Karpf brings diverse skills and experiences to “Christian Sci-Fi Night”: professor at Christian universities, child actor on vintage TV shows like “Bonanza,” four-time Jeopardy champ. His published works include novels The Deliverer and Brimstone 1 and the short story “Basilica Obscura,” a Realm Award finalist. Jason William Karpf is available for interviews about his ministry, “Christian Sci-Fi Night.” He can discuss innovative approaches to Christian teaching and how to find biblical truths in science fiction and other popular culture.
  • 3. BREAKING NEWS The only daughter of our late Elvis Presley-Lisa Marie Presley, passed away at the age of fifty-four. Presley made a public appearance at the Golden Globes. Lisa is survived by her mother Priscilla and her daughters Riley Keough and twins Harper and Finley Lockwood. I suspect within those acres; the late Lisa Presley will also be remembered. In addition to enjoying all of Elvis memorabilia, guests can stay at Graceland’s AAA Four Diamond resort hotel with nice beds, comfortable settings, and a great place of relaxation. An attraction that I would like to see is the new exhibit-The Making of Elvis which celebrates the new Elvis movie! If you can , please donate to the Elis Presley Charitable foundation which provides scholarships to students in Memphis entering music, film, television, and theater.
  • 4. BIRTHDAYS-PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE I could not develop a newsletter on my father’s birthday without at least acknowledging that today is Mr. Alfred Earl Love’s birthday. As I listen to many of the stories and illustrations, our father was extremely outgoing and well known for his skills in baseball! When I reflect, I can hear him saying, “Life is what you make it!” It is not a noun, verb or adjective, it is life”. Some people are in the land of living, but not living. Some people are here and would rather not be, that is what we call a problem. If one is here and don’t want to be, that is a time to reflect and get some type of assistance. Life is good and what you make of it depends on YOU. Life does not depend on others, it is you! Once YOU understand that YOU can choose to live or be in the land and not living, life will be better for YOU. I appreciate the many wishes, flowers, and thoughts, but what I appreciate is the joy and happiness that I see in people who I have created, yep, my girls! Yes, it is my birthday, but it is really a time to reflect and live beyond what you ever imagined. If one is asked to go an extra mile, I often ask what if they are unable to? If you are unable to go an extra mile for any reason, try! Life is about trying and then understanding how to reach what you expect! Historically, today is Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. Personally, I never met Dr. King, but I had the opportunity to meet his daughter (Late Yolanda King) and wife (Late Coretta Scott King) during my lifetime. First off, I appreciate the Dr. King Holiday, but most importantly, I utilize that time to reflect on how I can become a more effective leader, entrepreneur, family member, Christian and timekeeper. As a result of seeking, I have been invited to the Leadership and Equity online conference. I believe to facilitate change; one must understand the concept of Change Agent. A Change Agent understands how to think differently, be different and move in the RIGHT direction.
  • 5. Within the generations that have surpassed many, there is a lack of communication. Many people reach for the wrong items to solve issues when the need for communication is a possibility. No one really understand possibilities until one seek to understand. As a nation and body of people, no one has reached this Promise Land. It appears everyone is still in the land of milk and honey, but the milk and honey are not utilized in a way that embrace one’s thinking or actions. When one think of a land of milk, one should live within the land thinking pure which means void of any ill concepts. Although ill emotions and thinking occurs, the need to find a possibility to solve the issue should be readily available. As I read the newspaper and watch some television, many of our young people are still falling victims to society of violence or a misunderstanding or a problem that was never resolved. The question becomes to the young people, “Where is the milk?” Unfortunately, there is no milk because people are not willing to reprogram their minds daily. The mind builds and builds and eventually the thoughts within one’s mind explodes into an action that could have a lasting negative impression. There should be measures of how to reprogram the mind and form pure thoughts daily. Each day should be new, but what I have discovered is the mind builds and it does for each person, what one selects to do with the accumulation depends on the person! One can speak of honey which should be sweet, but nothing within the world to a mind that is full of impurities is sweet, every aspect is bitter. How can one create a more realistic approach to the real land of milk and honey? The only way to create a culture of milk and honey is to inform, transform and recreate. We inform through knowledge building, but it must begin at a very young age. Many aspects of life are taught as destruction is occurring, which ultimately makes it too late, at least for those living in the microwave world. Secondly, transformation can only happen with habit. Each day is a new day, but in the mind of those who are bitter, each day is another day that continues to build until a negative action occurs. To transform, one must communicate and address immediately. Finally, the notion of recreation is inevitable. Everyone is not an artist, but everyone can have expectations. Expectations of how one will interact, live, and develop within the world. As far as the eye can see with some of the victims who have fallen, I realize that many are living aimlessly in the world without direction, expectations, and order. As a result, we are not living up to the dream of unity, we are living in division and war. So, what is the solution to the bitterness within the land? The solution to every problem is prayer and looking at oneself and transforming thinking and expectations for daily living! I will attend the Leadership and Equity event-January 16th virtual
  • 6. GUEST COLUMNIST Not Sleeping Well at Night? Try Getting Some Sunshine During the Day: Study By Matthew Wilson Have you found yourself feeling more drowsy and tired lately? Are you both hitting the hay later and wanting to stay in bed longer? Well, you may need to go outside more frequently, shake off those winter blues, and soak in some sunshine to sleep better. A recent study, published in the Journal of Pineal Research, made a surprising discovery: People are more likely to go to bed later and get up later in the wintertime. Researchers studied 507 University of Washington undergraduates from 2015 to 2018, finding that they were on average going to sleep and waking up around 30 minutes later during the
  • 7. cold months. This surprised researchers who figured students would go to bed later in the summer when daylight saving time is in effect. It turns out the lack of sunlight in the winter could be impacting people’s circadian rhythms and pushing them back. At least that’s what researchers in the sleep study have hypothesized. For the uninitiated, a circadian rhythm is a natural internal process that decides an individual’s sleep schedule, among other things, according to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. It can be affected by both light and darkness, so much so that the CDC suggests dimming artificial light and darkening your room for a better night’s sleep. But according to the study, researchers found the loss of natural light during the winter may have pushed back the students’ circadian rhythms by up to 30 minutes. RELATED: Sleeping Soundly: Scientists Find a New Way to Reduce Recurring Nightmares In an interview with the University of Washington News, researcher and author Horacio de la Iglesia said, “If you do not get enough exposure to light during the day when the sun is out, that ‘delays’ your clock and pushes back the onset of sleep at night.” So based on the study, researchers determined that sunshine during the day played a greater role than artificial lights at night in determining when a person goes to sleep. Every hour of daylight moved up the students’ bedtime by 30 minutes. Meanwhile, artificial light had the opposite effect of delaying sleep by 15 minutes.
  • 8. While there’s more research to be done, one can take away some valuable tips from this study. If you find yourself continuously staying up later, try going outside more throughout the day and spending time in the sun. It’s something that dogs have long realized, explaining why man’s best friend loves to sunbathe, according to PetKeen. Sunlight helps regulate their circadian rhythm. Even on an overcast day, researchers determined that sunshine still has the same effect. You can also try to minimize the amount of artificial light in your life in the evening hours. So, goodnight and pleasant dreams. Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day: All About the History — and Importance — of the Federal Holiday AUTHOR Julia Diddy In the United States, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that takes place annually on the third Monday in January. It celebrates the January 15 birthday — and more broadly, the life and achievements — of the civil rights leader. For those who are not fully familiar with the importance and necessity of the celebration, here is a brief history behind the holiday. King is one of the most prominent figures of the civil rights movement, which took place from the 1950s to 1960s. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, the Baptist minister and activist made it his mission to advocate for a nonviolent end to racial segregation. Some of his most influential achievements included leading the 1963 March on Washington, advocating for the passage of
  • 9. the Civil Rights Act of 1964, being awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964, and advocating for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray a few years later, on April 4, 1968. Following King’s assassination, per Britannica, there was a call to declare his birthday a national holiday, and legislation to support this endeavor was introduced in Congress that same year. Unfortunately, racial prejudice and politically motivated objections would result in a delay of the federal designation for another 15 years. As detailed at History.com, former democratic Congressman John Conyers was the first to call for a holiday honoring King. Four days after King’s assassination, on the floor of Congress, Conyers — one of the only Black members of Congress at the time — made his plea, to no avail. However, Conyers’ unwavering commitment to the cause over the next 15 years would play a crucial role in the eventual acceptance of the move to declare MLK Day a national holiday. As described by historian Don Wolfensberger, “Conyers would persist year after year, Congress after Congress, in introducing the same bill again and again, gathering co-sponsors along the way, until his persistence finally paid off.” Representative John ConyersBettmann / Contributor / Getty Images
  • 10. Conyers recruited the Congressional Black Caucus — “of which he was a founding member,” History.com reported — to join the fight. The CBC supported Conyers’ efforts in reintroducing the bill, year after year, and advocated for support within their constituent communities. By the early 1980s, the CBC had collected 6 million signatures in support of a federal holiday. Stevie Wonder’s song “Happy Birthday,” an ode to King, became a hit and further increased public awareness and support of the cause. In 1983, during President Ronald Regan’s administration, the bill advocating for the designation of MLK Day as a federal holiday officially passed. According to Time magazine, Regan was for some time reluctant to throw his support behind the idea, having harbored “longstanding objections that this would open the door to many other groups seeking similar holidays.” At the time, President George Washington was the only individual figure whose birthday was designated a national holiday. However, Reagan eventually ceded to the ever-mounting support for the measure. In 1986, the first national Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed. Resistance to this persisted, though, particularly in several Southern states that opted to make their displeasure known by instead celebrating the day in honor of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that every state officially observed MLK Day, underscoring the fact that support of equal rights remains, sadly, an often-divisive subject. Dr. Clayborne Carson, centennial professor of history, emeritus, at Stanford University and the founding director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, cites the holiday as being important inspiration and a crucial reminder of what is possible when advocating for mass social change.
  • 11. “If you put someone on a pedestal, [then] you can’t really be like them,” Carson shared with Time in 2015. “But if you realize that he was a human being just like the rest of us, who was caught up in a great movement and did extraordinary things, then people begin to understand that they can do extraordinary things, too.” Dr. Love’s Message to the Youth One of the most important aspects of life that one should remember is one cannot change something that has a permanent impression. Before you act, think. If you have any suspicion that your next move could drastically impact your life in a negative way, do not react, transform your mind! In researching youth of today, I have come to the realization that communication is non-verbal. What I mean by non-verbal is one communicate through fighting or committing some act that will greatly affect your freedom and your life. My advice is to remain focused, read one scripture per day. The material things that you may believe you can get
  • 12. by taking short cuts, those things will be added unto you by God. Everything one need is through prayer and supplication. Do not steal, do not take one’s life, including your own and do not commit to something that will change or alter your life. The Soap Opera, One Life to Live is correct, everyone receives one life, and it is important to protect it through clean living. In addition, the pranks that some of you pull on each other, think it over carefully because it could be a prank gone wrong. To sum this advice up, “Live with purpose and live within the confines of the norms of laws and expectations.” Thinking that life has short cuts, it doesn’t. Thinking that one moment cannot alter life, it can. Live a life that is free from danger and turn to communication and seek to find some type of understanding.

NFL NEWS FOOTBALL Bills defeat Dolphins in Wild Card matchup with Damar Hamlin ‘supporting from home’ By Fiifi Frimpong New York Daily News Jan 15, 2023, at 5:38 pm The Buffalo Bills continued their emotional season with a win against the Miami Dolphins in an AFC Wild Card matchup at Highmark Stadium on Sunday as Damar Hamlin watched from home, days after being released from the hospital. “My heart is with my guys as they compete today!” Hamlin wrote on Twitter before opening kickoff. “Supporting from home as I focus on my recovery. Nothing I want more than to be out there with them! LFG” ADVERTISEMENT The No. 2 seed Bills defeated No. 7 seed Dolphins, 34-31, in a game that was closer than expected. The Bills entered Sunday 14-point favorites with the Dolphins without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has been in concussion protocol since Dec. 26. Skylar Thompson got the start in place of Tagovailoa. Thompson went 18-for-45 for 220 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. The Wild Card matchup comes nearly two weeks after Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest in a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2. Less than 10 days from suffering the horrifying incident,
  • 16. Hamlin was discharged from a Buffalo-area hospital and continued his rehab at home. Like last week’s season-finale win against the Patriots, Hamlin live-tweeted the game. He praised his teammates who scored touchdowns throughout the afternoon. After Bills running back James Cook scored a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, Hamlin gave his teammate a nickname: “Chef James.” The playoff win comes a day after Hamlin visited his teammates at the team facility, according to an ESPN report. Bills linebacker Matt Milano posted a photo of Hamlin on his Instagram story taken at the team’s facility. “I saw Damar today & bawled my eyes out! What a miracle to see him walking,” Brooke Kromer, daughter of Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer tweeted Saturday.
