Detecting aero acoustic noise exerting areas on the IKCO DENA+ vehicle via flow
visualization and experimental investigation of a corrected model
The main focus of this study was on investigation of the causes and reduction of the IKCO Dena+ vehicle
cabin noise. In this study, using wind tunnel testing on a 2:5 scaled model of the vehicle, noise exerting
areas were identified and a solution to reduce the noises was tested. The measurements were conducted
using hot wire anemometers and pressure differential sensors. The entirety of tests were conducted at 18,
36, 54, 72, 90, 108, 118.8 km/h wind velocities and modifications to certain areas of the body were made
in order to reduce cabin noise in the front and back. Results indicated that modifications to the rear
quarter glass area had the greater effect on reducing flow disturbances and the volume of noise on the rear
windshield. On the other hand, modifications done to the side mirrors had the largest effect on increasing
the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle’s windshield. These modifications reduced the level of
pressure disturbances by 9 and 5 percent respectively.
