THERE’SNEVERBEENABETTERTIMETOBUILDABETTERUS!
You know the challenges that we face in Ventura. People of all ages and backgrounds are struggling to
reach their full potential. More and more children face seemingly insurmountable learning gaps. Families
find it difficult to spend quality time together. People are not connected to their neighbors and face time
happens through a phone. And instead of seeing the income gap shrink, it seems all we do is watch it
grow.
But when challenges arise, the Y – and donors like you – steps in. After 128 years of serving Ventura, the
Y understands what our community needs to be its best. Working with generous donors like you, the Y
provides everyone the opportunity to be healthy and thrive, to connect with others, and contribute to a
better community. Everything the Y does is in service of making us – as individuals and a community –
better. For a better you. For a better community. For a better country. For a better us!™

3rd Grade Learn To Swim...At the Y we know how crucial learning to swim is
especially in a beachside community.  Research shows that if a child hasn’t learned to swim by 3rd grade
they most likely never will.  To ensure that all 3rd graders have the opportunity to learn the YMCA has
partnered with elementary schools across Ventura to teach 3rd graders how to swim, for free, ensuring that
they can learn this life saving skill.
Operation ventura...One of the most complex challenges our community faces
is homelessness and one of the most heartbreaking aspects of being homeless are the children who are
affected by it.  In 2013, there were 1,774 adults and children who were homeless.  To give these children
a sense of belonging and safety the Y started Operation Ventura which provides any child, who is in a
homeless, foster, or transitional living situation, the opportunity to participate in Y programs for free.
LIVESTRONG® at the y...Some of the hardest words to hear from your doctor are
“you have cancer”.  Fighting the disease can be even harder and once you are finished treatment you then
learn to live with your “new norm” as a cancer survivor. At the Y, we want to ensure that after a cancer
diagnosis and treatment, cancer survivors have a safe and inviting place where they can embark on a
new wellness journey.  To accomplish this, the Y provides cancer survivors and their families with three
free months at the Y where our trained staff work two days a week with them to help them regain their
strength, flexibility and confidence.

OPEN DOORS...With our doors open to all, the Y brings together people from all
backgrounds and supports those who need us most. Through our Open Doors program, people
participate in all the Y has to offer regardless of their ability to pay. Open Doors provides Y scholarships
to children, families, individuals and seniors, ensuring that no one is turned away and everyone has
the ability to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Programs for children, adults leading
a healthy lifestyle and seniors reconnecting shouldn’t be a luxury. Every dollar donated to the Ventura
YMCA has a lasting impact on the people of Ventura.
Esl classes...All Ys strive to ensure access, inclusion and engagement for all segments
of society so they feel welcome as participants, members, staff and volunteers. In response to our ever
evolving community demographics, ESL classes were added to ensure that everyone has the ability to
learn English so they feel empowered to engage and connect in our community. ESL classes are free and
participants are encouraged to bring their families so they have a support group as they learn a new
language.
