3. Idea one – Snap out of it, Arctic Monkeys
Narrative based/ non-linear due to flashbacks and daydreams
The song is about the idea of missing the one that got away, and the way that you see it, the
relationship they’re currently in isn’t right for them, but all you can do is wait for them to see that and
until they do you’ll be there waiting for them.
The general idea that seems doable is to have a narrative about a man in love with a woman, who is in a
relationship with another and he can’t get her out of his head no matter how hard he tries, a scene during
the music video would include him coming across the couple whilst out on a night, and being thrown into a
daydream in which he walks over and kisses her and everything seems perfect until he comes back to
reality and is left heartbroken. During the time that this would be filmed, trying to convey the entire
process of unrequited love and how long it takes to get over, those dark and lonely feelings are easy to
get across in winter, but when the woman is on screen, the use of festive lights can push the idea of her
being his happiness.
The title of the song and the lyrics
mean to say that the man is
waiting for his unrequited love to
snap out of it and realise that the
relationship isn’t right for her and
he can have a chance with her.
However, there’s a second
meaning to the title to consider
which is that the man should be
the one to snap out of it, as he is in
love with someone who’s already
in a commitment and to continue to
obsess over her is just torturing
yourself, as there’s nothing he can
do when the person he loves is
happy with another. The idea when
it comes to editing is to have it
seem like time passes so slowly
5. Idea three – moving to new york, the
wombatsThe type of music video where throughout the clips of different activities and shots, a
general story arch can be found, but the majority of the video is random clips of life
happening around the camera. They’re easy to watch and easy to film but are
enjoyable and captivating as there is nearly always something fresh on the screen.
The shots are typically of something that happens regularly in life but isn’t mundane,
all the clips that are shot should be interesting to watch. The visuals tend to link to the
lyrics where they can. One aspect of this style of video is that because of their lack of
obvious storyline, it feels more natural and less staged.
The general story line for this song would be someone going through a mixed time of
good and bad but choosing to make a big life change in hopes of finding happiness
somewhere else. The story arch of the video is most likely going to start off with clips
set in a messy environment, where nothing really make sense, moving/travelling
shots during the chorus where the lyrics talk about moving away, creating a narrative
video that has direct links to the lyrics.
Due to the footage style and the genre of music video typically being quite cinematic,
there’ll be clips to film in random places that’ll come up unexpectedly, meaning that
not all of the footage can be captured on the DSLR cameras and will have to be shot
on a phone, which although will degrade the quality of the video, gives it a more
natural, indie look that’ll still work with the genre.
7. summary of ideas
• Filming to fit the lyrics, makes a visual link to the song and creates a
narrative.
• Simple to follow narratives are easy to film
• Not one fixed setting, there may be reoccurring places that show up
but generally keep the location flowing throughout the video
• The key characteristic of Indie Rock is that it’s not being made to
make money, it’s there to show people their perspective on life, so
that mixed with obvious lack of budget leads to simple mise-en-
scene.

8. Summary
5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• Easy to find useable footage
• Ideas fit general conventions of the products
• Narrative videos hold the audiences attention better than
performance.
• Easy to find useable lighting and requires simple editing
techniques.
• Footage can be complied quickly and with ordinary props and
location
5 weaknesses of you ideas
• May not look professional due to phone camera
• Good Actors that are available are difficult to find
• Setting bar too high for what is actually within reach of
producing at a good quality
• Conceptual videos are really difficult to make whilst getting the
9. Final idea – artist/title/info
• Name of Track – Moving to New York
• Name of Artist – The Wombats
• Name of Album – A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation
• Brief biographical background – The Wombats are an English
Indie Rock band formed in Liverpool in 2003. The band is
signed to 14th Floor Records in the UK and Bright Antenna in
the US.
• Links to other artists – similar bands to The Wombats include
The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon and The Killers.
• Genre info – Indie Rock originate in the UK in the 1970’s and
came to be used when Grunge and Punk Revival broke into the
mainstream, to describe artists that retained an outsider
perspective. Despite Indie Rock itself becoming more
mainstream as of the early 2000’s, the genre still identifies
artists that are free to experiment with subjects that are of
limited appeal to the mainstream audience, like diversity, sound,
mental health and emotion. This has understandably given the
genre a reputation for being more real, perhaps harsher than
the mainstream labels as the lyrics don’t hide the realities of life
behind being focused on appealing to the majority of the public.
10. Final idea – track summary
• Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration and
pace]
The song is about the bands front man, Matthew Murphy, and an old
relationship that turned sour. In an Interview it was explained that he
had bumped into her in a bar and she was cheating on him with
another woman. Due to her being “a bit crazy”, Murphy said he
wanted to move to New York to get away.
The song describes the deceit Murphy has faced, and that he is using
the song to get over it, as the lyrics say “It’s therapeutic somehow”.
In the chorus the lyrics, “Looks like Christmas came early, Christmas
came early for me” is actually referring to the seasonal depression that
Matthew Murphy faces every year but due to the break up, his
depressive episodes came sooner than usual.
This identifies the song in the Indie Rock genre as they feel free to
write about what they want to and not focusing directly on whether it’ll
sell or not.
The duration of the song is 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
The track has a BPM of 162.
11. Final idea – your idea
• Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of imagery or
narrative, genre conventions, etc]
• A common convention of an Indie Rock music video is to have performance and/or but after
consideration of the conceivability of planning and filming an entire performance, chosen to
be narrative based as is easier to produce.
• With narrative based music videos, it’s important to make links to the lyrics and style of music
so the story is easy for the audience to follow.
• It’s important to have a consistent style and look throughout the music video, one that reflects
well within the genre and represents the meaning and lyrics of the artist.
12. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Video techniques/style/conventions to be used [include how you intend to implement
these]
• A common convention of an Indie Rock music video is to have performance and/or but

• With this particular song, the warmth of the footage when editing will be a key factor, as
it is a very fast, upbeat song with lyrics that reflect on a tough time and wanting to
escape, hiding behind the seemingly happy sound. It will be edited to the fast beat but
the footage will reflect the lyrics, meaning filming with shadows and darker scenes.
13. Potential research targets
There has to be research conducted on potential production techniques that
may be used during filming and editing. The targets of this research should be
appropriate to the artist and genre and can be related to camera, editing, story
or sound techniques.
It makes sense to look at the videos from bands that are popular with the
same audience and share a genre and an easy way to find them is to search
the name of the band (The Wombats) and look at what other things people
have searched for.
Some examples of bands that may be potential research targets for production
techniques include;
• The Kooks
• Arctic Monkeys
• Joy Division
• Cage the Elephant
• Kaiser Chiefs
• Franz Ferdinand
These bands have similar conventions and qualities to The Wombats and
have attracted a familiar audience, which gives good reason to research into
what makes their music videos work.
