AsIreflectonthelasttwelvemonthsit’shardtobelieveayear
hasgonebysinceIassumedtheroleasBoardChair.It’sbeenbusy,
excitingandoneIwoulddescribeasa“transition”year.
Shortlyafterour2016AGM,theBoardapprovedanOperational
ReviewoftheHealthServicesFoundation.Thereviewfocusedonall
aspectsoftheFoundationincludingfundraisingactivities,resource
allocation,officeefficiencies,andstaffing.Thegoalistobetter
positiontheFoundationbyaligningwithcurrentbestpracticesand
ensuringweraisemoneyinthemostefficientmannerpossible.
Iampleasedtosaythevastmajorityofrecommendationswere
supportedbytheBoardandprogressisbeingmadeonallofthem.
Targetcompletionforimplementingtherecommendationsisthe
springof2018.
Wecontinuetoforgenewrelationshipswithourpartnersat
theNovaScotiaHealthAuthority(NSHA).TheNSHAisnowtwo
yearsintotheirmandateandstillverymuchinthebuildingphase.
Werecognizetheimportanceofthisrelationshipandwillcontinue
tobuilduponittoensureboththeFoundationandNSHAbetter
understandeachother’sneedsandwishesaswehelpsupport
qualityhealthcareontheSouthShore.
ThisyearwewereverypleasedtofullysupporttwoMinimal
InvasiveSurgicalsuitesfortheOperatingRoomsatSouthShore
RegionalHospital,committing$1.4-milliontotheproject.This
willgiveourdoctorsandnursesthemostuptodatetechnology
ensuringwewillbeabletoretainandrecruitoursurgicalstaffon
theSouthShore.Iampleasedtosaythatthroughprudentfinancial
management,reconciliationofoldoutstandingcommitments,
andfavorablemarketconditionswewereabletofullysupportthis
projectwithouttheneedofacapitalcampaign.Thisisoursingle
biggestprojecttodate.
Aswelookforward,theNSHAhasannouncedanexpansionof
theEmergencyDepartmentatSouthShoreRegional,includinga
newlydesignedEndoscopySuite,aswellasa12-bedDialysisUnit.
Wefullyanticipatebeingengagedinthisprojectandworkingwith
theNSHAastheprojectbecomesreality.
Inclosing,Iwouldjustliketosayaheartfeltthankyoutoour
donors,Foundationstaff,Boardmembersandvolunteers.Without
yourdedicationandhardworkwesimplywouldnothavebeenable
tosupporttheprojectswehavetodateandhealthcarewouldlook
verydifferentontheSouthShore.

localhealthcareandcommunitygivingwithus.Wearealwaysamazedbythe
generosityofourcommunityespeciallywithyourinvestmentinhealthonthe
SouthShore.
TheFoundationstaffandIextendaspecialthankyoutoeachdonorwho
hascalledus,walkedthoughourdoorsandparticipatedinoureventsoverthe
lastyear.Itisalwaysapleasuretogettoknowyoualittlebetter.
ThisyearwehavecontinuedtocreatenewrelationshipswiththeNova
ScotiaHealthAuthority.Inpreparationforthistransition,twoyearsago
allhospitalFoundations,withintheprovince,joinedtocreatetheHealth
FoundationsofNovaScotia.Thisgrouphasaworkingrelationshipwiththe
NSHAwhichhasbeenusefultoallFoundationswhenworkingthroughthis
newstructure.Wemeettwiceannuallyinpersontodiscussourissuesandwork
towardsolutions.
WehaveseenanevolutioninourFoundationstaffing.Wewelcome
AlisonClementstotheroleofDevelopmentOfficer.Shehasastronghistory
injournalism,radioinparticular,inNewBrunswickandmostrecentlyinNova
ScotiawithourgoodfriendsatCKBW.Alisonisalreadymakingasignificant
impactinourfundraisingandcommunications.Aswewelcomeonestaffwe
willsoonseeanothergraduateintoretirement.ThiswillbeBelindaSmith’sfinal
AGMwithus.AftermanyyearsworkinginMentalHealthandatotalof25years
withtheFoundation,shewillretireonApril1,2018totravelandspendadditional
timewithfamily.ThankyousomuchBelindaforyourdedicationtoyourposition,
theFoundationandthedonorsinourcommunity.Thentherearethosewho
neverwanttoleavetheFoundation.WearesopleasedthatDarleneLangille
hasreturnedtoworkintheoffice,onapart-timebasis,after17yearsinNew
Brunswick.WelcomebackDarlene.
Allstaff,Boardandcommitteemembershaveembracedawelltimed
OperationalReviewwhichhastakenanindepthlookatwhatwe’vedonewelland
whatareascouldbenefitthroughadditionalgrowth.Atremendousamountof
timeandefforthasbeenrequiredbyallwhohaveparticipatedintheevaluation
processaswelookaheadtotheEmergencyRoomRedevelopmentProject.Thank
youtoallwhohaveembracedtheworkloadandthesechallenges.
Pleasetakeafewminutestolookattheitemsandprojectssupported
thisyear.Theover$556,000spentontheseitemshasmadeanimpactin
manydifferentlocations.Wehavehadatremendousamountofvarietyin
ourpurchasesthisyear,atbothhospitals,includingbeds,abladderscanner,
abonedensitometryunit,afloorscrubber,labequipmentandRestorative
Careequipmentjusttonameafew.Wehavecontinuedpartneringwithin
theNSHAstructurebysupportingtheeffortsoftheOurHealthCentre
CollaborativePracticeandcontinuingtoassisttheNewGermanyMedical
Centre.Inpastyears,wehavebeenpleasedtoassistwiththeLunenburgFamily
HealthCollaborativePracticeandtheBridgewaterandAreaFamilyHealth
Centre,asthesegroupsworkwithlocalNSHAstaffservingthecommunity.

Asalways,ahighlightofouryearwasthe7thannualRadiothonheldon
Valentine’sDay.AheartfeltthankyoutothestaffofCKBWandCountry100.7
whoembracethiseventandourFoundationcompletely.Radiothonhadaspecial
challengethisyearasonFebruary13thNovaScotiawasimmobilizedwitha
snowstorm.Stafftrudgedthroughsnowbanksandavoidedsnowplowstoensure
thiseventwasasuccess.Anditwas–whenweclosedthebooksonRadiothon
2017wehadraisedover$150,000topurchasesevenitemsfortheOperating
Roomsatacostof$0.03perdollarraised.Thiseventsteadilyraisesatremendous
amountofmoneywithveryfewcostswhilebringingthecommunityandour
hospitalstafftogether.ThankyoutotheFoundationstaff,Boardmembers,
volunteersandtheORstaffwhowelcomedusintotheirpatientcarespace.
OurWomen’sGivingCirclesupportedthenaloxonedrugkitslast
November,HititforHealtheffortspurchasedaportableventilatorandCurl
foraCauseboughtseveralpiecesofequipmentforthePhysiotherapyUnit
atFishermen’sMemorialHospitalincludingashockwavetherapymachine,
previouslyunavailableinthelocalhealthsystem.Thisbonspielcontinuesto
amazeusaswesawthelargestfundraisingrevenuesinits18yearhistoryraising
justover$40,000.
Oureventandcommitteechairsdeserveanadditionalthankyouandour
appreciationfortheirdedication,guidanceandadditionalhoursoftengivenafter
analreadylongday.AnothertremendousthankyoutotheBoardmemberswho
havecontinuedtosharetheplanningandworkloadinspecializedleadership
roles,enhancingourbehindthescenesoperations.ThisFoundationBoardis
verysupportivewithmembersworkingharderthanmosttorolluptheirsleeves
anddigintothecommitteeandeventworkaswellasthehighlevelpolicy
discussions.TheyareauniqueanddedicatedgroupandIgivethemthewarmest
ofmyappreciation.ThisyearwewillbesorrytoloseChrisWhite,fromRBC,as
hehasacceptedapromotioninWinnipeg,aswellas,ourpastBoardChairTrudy
Johnson,afterfulfillingeightyearsofservice.Trudyhasalwaysbeenavailable,
hasguidedusthroughchangesandchallenges,hasbeensupportive,haslistened
andhasofferedjusttherightadvice.Wewillallmissyoutremendouslyatthe

YoulikelyrememberTiffany’sversionofTommyJames&The
Shondells1967hit,IThinkWe’reAloneNow,playingatTheTeenClub
onKingStreet.YouprobablyremembertheopeningdayofDairyQueen
onLahaveStreetandtheline-upthatnearlycrossedtheoldbridge.
Andmostlylikely,yourecallthegentlemannerofDr.Gandhiashe
checkedyourthroatfortonsillitis,oryourearsforanearinfection.
Perhapsheunwillinglycausedyoualittlepainwithashot.Ifthat’sthe
case,youlikelyfeltanothertingeofpainwhenyouheardofhispassing.
Dr.Gandhiwasanexceptionaldoctor,andanevenbetterperson.
Thereisnotbetterevidenceofthatthanwithhisfinalgiftto
thecommunity.
Afewmonthsbeforehisdeath,Dr.Gandhi,whoservedasadoctor
forBridgewaterandsurroundingareaforyears,satdownonthesofa
withhisson,Sanjiv,foraconversationabouthisimminentdeath.“Dad
knewhewouldn’tsurviveayearandwetalkedabouthisfuneraland
otherthings.Hewantedhishousetogotothecommunity,”Sanjivsaid.
Dr.GandhiandhiswifearrivedinCanadafromIndiawithtwelve
dollarsbetweenthetwo. Afterservingthecommunityforfortyyears,
andgrowingathrivingfamilypracticeandraisingtwosuccessfulsons
inBridgewater,hediedknowinghishousewouldbedonatedtothe
HealthServicesoftheFoundationoftheSouthShore.Itwashisidea.
Itwasveryimportanttohimthatitbeputtogooduse.
SanjivandhisbrotherRajivtalkedtotheHealthServices
Foundation’sManagingDirector,ArleenStevensabouttheideaofgiving
thishousetotheFoundation.“Wedidn’tneedthefinancialproceeds
fromthesaleofthehouse,”explainedSanjiv.“Givingthehousetothe
hospitalwasourwaytogivebacktothecommunitythatgave
ussomuch.”
AboutgivingagiftlikeahousetotheFoundation,Sanjivwants
peopletoknowthatyoucanbecreativewhenconsideringleavinga
legacy.Cashisn’talwaystheeasiestthingtobequeath.Henotedgiving
ahouseorotherassetcangetturnedintoother,moreusefulthings,like
helpingtofundmedicalequipment.
Theirparentswerealwaysveryhumble,andtheGandhibrothers
knowtheirfatherwouldn’thavewantedanyrecognition.“Theyrealized
theopportunitytheyweregivenlivingontheSouthShore,”saysSanjiv.
“Ithinkthey’dbethrilledknowingdadisstillcaringforhispatients.”

Aswegrowupwedaydreamofwherelifeandourfuturecareerwilltake
us.ForJimFox,hismilitarycareertookhimfromBedford,NovaScotia,
acrossCanada,withhisCarolyn,fromLaHave.Buttherewasnevera
doubtthesetwoBluenoserswouldreturntotheEastCoastonedayand
planttheirrootsontheSouthShore.
Jimsaysonceyou’reontheSouthShoreyouarepartofthe
community.“Asamemberofthecommunityyouputyourshoulder
intomakingyourcommunitybetter.Bydefinition,ourhospitalsare
thecommunity.Whatgoesoninsidethehospitalinvolvesthewhole
communityinonewayoranothersoifyouwanttoactuallycontribute
andpromotewhereyoulive,thenthehospitalisalogicalplaceto
support.”
Withinayearofsettlingintotheir200-yearoldhome,nestled
intheoutskirtsofMahoneBay,theFoxsbegangivingbacktolocal
healthcarethroughCarolyn’svolunteerworkinthepalliativecareunitat
Fishermen’sMemorialHospitalinLunenburg.“Istartedvolunteeringand
thenweendedupusingbothFishermen’sandSouthShoreRegionalas
patients.Wecan’tsayenoughaboutthewonderfulhelpwe’vereceivedat
bothhospitals.”
OvertheyearstheFoxshavemadenumerousdonationstothe
HealthServicesFoundationoftheSouthShore,whetherinmemoryofa
friendorinsupportofacampaign.“Idon’tthinkweeverreally‘thought’
aboutitgivingtothehospital,”Carolynnotes,“itjustseemedlikethe
naturalthingtodo.Wewanttoseenewequipmentinourcommunity
hospitals.”
Whenitcametimeforthecoupletoredotheirwill,theFoxs
decidedtoincludetheHealthServicesFoundationasoneofthe
beneficiaries.“Aswewereconsideringouroptionswesimplyasked
ourselveswherewecouldputourmoneythatwouldmakeanimpact,”
saysJim.“WechosethehospitalsthroughtheFoundationbecausethey
havethebroadestreach.Andhonestly,theFoundationknowshowto
spendmoneyourhospitalsneedsbetterthanwedo.Ihavefaithinthe
organizationsowewillgivethemasmuchmoneyaswecanallocate.”
JimandCarolynjusthopeothersthinkoftheir“local”when
planningouttheirfinaldonations.”Nowadaystheolderpopulationis
moreactivethaneverandwillrelyonlocalhealthcareformoreyears.
Aslongastheyhavetheirhealththeyaredoingthingswhichwill
generatemoreofaneedforstrong,localhealthcare.Peopleneedto
thinkofandgivetotheirlocalhospitalsandtheirFoundations.”

Raising Funds for Your “Rainy Day”
It’shardtostopAnneCosgroveinhertracks.TheproudLunenburgCounty
residentisinvolvedinanumberofdifferentcommunityservicegroupsand
committees,keepingherwithafullday-planner.ButaphonecallinAugust
madelifecometoagrindinghalt;shehadcancer.
AradiologistatSouthShoreRegionalHospitalhadfoundabnormalities
inherannualmammogram.Afternearly20yearsofvolunteering,
fundraisingandbeingbothacommitteememberandboardmemberofthe
HealthServicesFoundationoftheSouthShore,Anne’slifewasabouttobeput
inthehandsoftheservicesandequipmentshehelpedfund.Annesaysthe
careshereceivedlocallyfromthestartmadeaworldofdifferencetoherand
herfamilyasshesetouttofightthedeadlydisease.“Weweretreated–andI
alwayssaywebecauseI’mnottheonlyonegoingthroughthis-likewewere
theonlyonesthey(themedicalstaff)werelookingafter.”
Afterthesurgerytoremovethecancerandamastectomy,the
Cosgrove’slefthappy,preparingforhernexthurdle–chemotherapy. While
thefirstroundofAnne’streatmentwentassmoothasitcould,another
medicalissuepresenteditselfaroundChristmas.“RightbeforeIwastostart
mysecondroundofchemoIbecameshortofbreath.Within24hoursIwas
intheemergencydepartmentinBridgewater,onagurney,learningIwas
inheartfailure.”AnnewasmoveduptotheMedicalSurgeryfloorofSouth
ShoreRegionalHospitalwhereshecontinuedtobeamazedatthecare.
AnneandherhusbandJimmovedtotheSouthShoreinthelate
1990s.Withinayear,sheknewshewantedtogivebacktohercommunity
throughimprovinglocalhealthcare.“Ifeelthatasresidentswejust
assumealltheserviceswerequirewillbethereforuswhenweneed
them.Ifyouliveinacommunity,youneedtogiveback!TheissuesI’m
dealingwithnowareproofofhowimportantthatis.Theequipmentin
ourhospitals,thatdoesn’tjustgetthere.Yes,itcostsmoneybutweare
abletoreceivetheseservicesinourowncommunitywhichiswherethe
Foundationcomesin.WeneedbothFishermen’sMemorialHospitaland
SouthShoreRegional.Ididn’treallyhavealottodowithSouthShore
RegionalbeforeIstartedthisjourneybutIappreciateeverysquarefootof
it.I’veusedalotofthemachines,beeninforsurgery,intheJourneyRoom
whichismagnificent.AllthesethingstheHealthServicesFoundationhas
fundedoratleastpartly-funded.”
Whileshecontinueshertreatment,shedoesn’tletcancergetinthe
wayofgivingbacktolocalhealthcare. “I’mveryproudtobeaHealth
ServicesFoundationboardmemberbecauseIappreciatenowwhatI
didn’tknowbefore.Weareproudofwhatweareabletoaddtohealth
carelocallyandhowtheFoundationistacklingmodernhealthpractices
headon.Wearesoluckytohavetheequipment,themedicalstaff,the
hospitalsandthecommunitysupportthatwedoontheSouthShore.
