                                    Preface

This book is the consequence of 22 years of theoretical and practical study. This
work has been compiled for people who would like to know how an idea is formed.
It is composed for people who would like to read my memoirs. The model itself is
intended for use by Therapists, Theatre Practitioners, Psychologists and
Philosophers. I would like to believe that I wasn’t biased toward any particular
discipline although some knowledge of Drama (specifically Forum Theatre) would
advantageous.


It is an expansion of Augusto Boals “Forum theatre” which came out of his
acclaimed work “The Theatre of the Oppressed “I have called this model ‘The
Micro-Forum Technique’ which is fundamentally Forum Theatre in small groups.


It has been a journey of observation, participation and reflection. It is a study of
human development fuelled by my need to explore and expand my own behaviour
primarily. It is only through one’s own expansion that human development can be
assessed. As the journey unfolded it became increasingly clearer that a method of
behaviour development was emerging.


The method of Behaviour is driven by the model that I have developed called ' The
Micro-Forum Technique ' as stated above it is largely based on the work of
Augusto Boal the great Brazilian theatre director and politician. Included is work
developed by George Wilhelm Hegel and Carl Gustav Jung. These three great
pioneers have helped shape this work.


As the emerging story of my own journey unfolds we see how the development of
a new model is formed. We see the struggles that it takes to achieve this and we
see the long and hazardous route that a process has to go through to come into
being.

essence of beings from past and present and into the future……………. Refinement
requires time patience and methodology. I have come to understand the
requirement of these things and are prepared to wait and wait and wait again
when necessary …………….. I can offer no right answers only true questions and
more time …………….. I can only deliver these messages through the essence of
leadership and hope to influence those that are willing and able to expand
consciousness………….. Only those with will and patience can accomplish these
duties it is not easy……………….. A point has come that necessitates great
change……………. Human consciousness is expanding at a rate faster than the
human mind can manage………………… Therefore, new systems, new ways of
understanding need to be established in order for the human mind to cope, to
reintegrate, and to continue expanding………………... There is always hope………………
True greatness can only be achieved through integrating with silence……………...
Silence is becoming scarce. Energy waves are becoming multiplied and multiplied
again…………... Energy sources are becoming multiplied and multiplied
again…………………. The nature of humanity is changing…………………. Therefore the
structure of humanity needs to change…………………….. We can only communicate
through those who are willing to integrate with silence…………………... Knowledge
can only be gained through this…………………… Noise distracts us from our silence;
energy forms distract us from our silence……………………. We must proceed with
caution………………….. We must proceed with silence. A long enough silence that we
may hear our own voice.

                                    Introduction


I assert definitely, that a school book is only good when an uninstructed
schoolmaster can use it at need, (almost as well as an instructed and talented
one.) It must essentially be so arranged that uninstructed men, and even
Mothers, may find in its clues sufficient help to bring them always one step
nearer than the child, to that progressive development of skill to which they
are leading him.

To Start


Let us know from the very beginning that everything can have infinite levels of meaning
it is our own choice. We can choose to excavate for more meaning or we can pass by for
less meaning. It is our own choice. The problem we have, is trying to understand that
which is impossible to fully understand, our own minds. If we are to believe the findings
of quantum physics we have to know that by observing something it changes. So by
finding meaning and observing it, it will change in some way revealing another level of
meaning and so on.


Now let us dissect the title a little and find out the meaning that I have given it ……

Following the Eye


My first level of understanding of this is that the eye is concerned with the instinct. We
can say that the instinct is that which is pure and unpolluted by circumstance. If we
trace back our journey deleting all our experience in the world we come to the pure
form of ourselves the part of us that knows, the part of us that holds a key to our being
in the world, our purpose. We can describe it as a gut feeling. We can describe it as a
longing for something. We can describe it as a niggling feeling. We can describe it as a
sense of belonging to a higher purpose. We can describe it as the spiritual path. We can
describe it as an essence of ourselves. We can describe it as the base of our belief
system. We can describe it as a calling from a distance. This is a poem written about my
experience of it.



The Call


My mind is rolling round
What is?.................
The inner cathedral
The inner sanctum lined with formless wealth
Moving slowly
Filling every imagined space
With featherlike smoke


I follow this entity which is not.
As all I am, is within.
All I was, inside, rolling, filling
What happens now?
I feel a craving a must
A formless chant
Haunting my yearning
My love, my life, my labour.
How is it that I must follow?
This seamless barren place
That calls me,

All will be revealed
When and to whom?

We can now mention the third eye. We describe that as the place in between our two
physical eyes. Some say this is a seat of wisdom and gives access to our higher self? In
ancient culture the third eye was said to be in or near to the pineal gland located at the
centre of the brain in between the two hemispheres. The pineal gland's location deep in
the brain seems to imply hidden meaning. It was considered a mystery related to
spirituality and wisdom.


The physical presence of the eye within our head is also the observer and the
participator of our being in the world. Within the human eye is a micro-processor called
the Retina. The Retina is a remarkable micro-processing system it detects distance of
objects and adjusts itself accordingly. It measures the weight and length of light photons
which come into the eye. It then orders what are known as rods and cones into
formation with detailed information that is then sent via the optic nerve into the brain. It
is a miracle of creation. (Interestingly enough we will be using a cone shape to explore
the form of an archetype later in this work)



E.Y.E. (Engage your Education)


It has taken a long time to reach this point in my process, as my relationship with
education has been a battle. I felt unable to learn for a long time and was and still am
quite resistant to it (it takes determination to expand ones thought process). Although,
I have grown to love learning and I relish the incredible ability I have as a human being
to learn in whatever way I choose. I am so glad that I engaged my education. It is a
miracle. The human brain is limitless in possibility. We can almost achieve anything if we
are prepared to enter into relationship with ourselves but it requires self-parenting. By
that I mean that we have to take responsibility for our growth. It takes time and effort
to find meaning and understanding within ourselves, we have to enable the hidden
purposeful self and harness the human being that we are and learn to understand our
journey. The journey is by and large guided by the interactions we establish with other
human beings. It is seemingly a mystery and a task. Many people do not embark on this
journey. It takes time to realize that we have the ability to shape our journey in our own

way. Unfortunately human beings have a few design faults. Our biggest fault is that we
are given to lethargy; it is hard to break free from this. Our other fault (if you can call it
a fault) is our greatest opponent the need to be loved at all cost mostly to our peril do
we often not find the love that we crave, because we don’t really understand love. It is
often said that we need to love ourselves. Most people spend their entire lives looking
for love, when all the time it is our life purpose that is the love that is most fulfilling and
this is the route to loving ourselves.


The human brain is a fusion of 100 billion neurons with over 15 trillion connections and it
takes great pain to separate neurons one from another. We do this by facing our
thoughts and feelings. We can then begin to understand our selves by some kind of
negotiation between thoughts and feelings. We begin to engage with our education. By
observing ourselves and participating with ourselves we are in a self-parenting
relationship.



To Find the W.H.Y.


Once we start this internal negotiating we start to uncover the why. What the thoughts
and feelings are about. We begin to uncover our belief system, which leads us to our
purpose. The way to this is to find out what we don’t believe in, this seems to be an
easier route as our sense of what we don’t believe in is slightly more powerful than what
we do believe in it seems. This is certainly true for me anyway. The belief system is
directly connected to our purpose and if we can engage our education to illuminate our
belief system then we find our purpose. Once we uncover what we do believe in we can
bring it into consciousness and enable that to be our guide if you like. This can be a long
process but there is nothing more valuable.



W.H.Y. What + How = Y


Once we discover that we are able to learn and negotiate learning within ourselves we
begin to know what we are about. We begin to know how to learn in our own way.
Everybody learns in a slightly different way it would seem if we are to believe Jung’s
theories on psychological types. We are all unique and individual, once we start to
develop that uniqueness and enquiry there is a realisation. It is only you that can learn
for yourself, it is only you that can parent yourself ultimately. It is only when we choose
to engage our education on whatever level that we find out why and we find what and
how. This is Y. But, we have to choose it. We have to choose again and again, because

it is an ongoing journey of development. We are the drivers in our own lives and as my
very good friend says ‘the buck starts and stops with you’ so true.



The Beginning


This book is an exploration of my own journey and growth through education and self-
parenting, into the expression of an educational and psychological developmental tool
called ‘The Micro-Forum Technique’ which is a role-expansion system. I have found that
by developing a role- system within myself I have been able to self-parent, which is
basically creating a dialogue with oneself.


I have experienced many roles, and on reflection I came to a point that posed a
question? Why have I developed so many different roles within myself and why? I
started to look at my behaviour in a different way and asked more questions. I realised
that the development of a role- system has helped me integrate with a great many
people. It has enabled me to become very adaptable and able to communicate in a more
functional way and also I have learned skills that have helped me to parent myself i.e.
learning to cook. Roles are a combination of vocabulary and action. Vocabulary being
equated with the ongoing organizing thought process; and action being more equated
with emotions released as a consequence of thought. These things have expanded my
consciousness and stabilized my identity creating a useful set of tools.


I have therefore; through my experiences and work practise developed a way of
expanding a role- system. This has been a discovery made through the refining of my
belief system and following the call and the journey of self-parenting.



Role

       1. A protective persona, a tough shield protecting a susceptible and sensitive
personality.


      2. A role maybe fixed on another by a group, in order to influence the individual into a
     socially accepted norm.


      3. The role could be an illustration of a healthier identity, an ideal toward which the
deficient identity strives for.

     4. Is a set of possible behaviours.

As Mead in Landy (1993:22) is clear to point out as a social scientist:


       "It is generally recognised that the specifically social expressions of intelligence, or the
       exercise of what is often called "social intelligence" depend upon the given individual's
       ability to take the roles of, or "put himself in the place of", the other individuals
       implicated with him in given social situations; and upon his consequent sensitivity to
       their attitudes toward himself and toward one another." (1934: 141)


By introducing different role "types" or "parts" avenues of thought process can be adjusted
and enhanced through negotiation with self and others.



System

      1. Is a whole made up of several component parts that work together.


      2. The Concise Collins Dictionary definition of the word system is 1. A group or
         combination of interrelated, interdependent, or interacting elements forming a
         collective entity; a methodical or co-ordinated assemblage of parts, facts, etc. 3.
         Therefore a role-system is a method that organizes behaviours.


It is essential to have an expanded role system for three primary reasons.




      1. To be able to interact with others in work and play.


      2. To be able to structure the brain.


     3. To create an identity.


By structuring ourselves through a role- system we become more skilful and flexible and
we come under control of our ‘selves’. The selves of the personality are created through
the roles that we develop in life. Each role we develop carries a unique formulation of
vocabulary and action associated with that role. The role system that I have developed is
called ‘The Micro- Forum Technique’ and is based on the ‘Forum Theatre’ model
conceived by Augusto Boal.

    Brief Introduction to Forum Theatre

    The work of Augusto Boal has influenced theatre artists, social workers, psychologist’s,
    educators and political activists all over the world. His visionary techniques encourage
    spectators: active participants rehearsing strategies for change.


    In pure Forum Theatre, a group of people work together/brainstorm ideas to identify an
    area of oppression that they would like to challenge. It may of course, be their own
    oppression. When a theme has been elected, the group devises a small play which the
    oppression that they have identified is illustrated to a participating audience. The play is
    acted out and presented to an audience. It is then repeated until someone in the
    audience is moved to initiate change within the action. The audience member is
    encouraged to come onto the stage and play out their solution. Solutions are played
    within a given time frame. This is a very basic outline of the form.


    Forum Theatre grew out of Boals’ theatre of the oppressed.


    In South America in the 1970’s Augusto Boal witnessed political unrest and oppression
    and in reaction developed a style of theatre practise to address some of the issues that
    were pertinent in that society at that time. The object was to enable the people to look
    at their oppression through a theatrical form. To transform the perceptions of the
    people, to generate action with the public. By looking at problems by taking action in the
    form of dramatic representations the people were empowered to change or to
    acknowledge their own ability for change.


    By adapting the structure of Forum Theatre it has been possible to expand its great
    efficiency as a tool of behavioural change. It has been possible to adapt the structure
    into a small group formation that I have called ‘The Micro-Forum Technique’, creating an
    arena that is contained and efficient at structuring a role development system.



    Some observations:

   Life is getting faster and faster and will reach a crescendo point soon when we will feel
    that we have lost control. By the implementation of an adequate role-system subtle
    nuances of the nervous system become informed and we gain control over ourselves.

   As humans we only have a limited capacity and this is governed by our nervous system.
    The broader the role-system the greater control we have over the nervous system.



   More than a third of young people in the UK aged 16 to 24 do not feel part of their local
    community. Having an expanded role-system aids our communication skills.


   If we expand our minds and our experience through the development of a/the role-
    system we have access to greater awareness and knowledge. We are able to
    communicate with a broader range of people which leads us to greater awareness of self
    and others.


   Young people feel separated from the people around them. Role-systems enable greater
    integrative abilities. Being part of a community and interacting with a mix of people is a
    crucial part of a young person's development. We are more able to mix with a range of
    others if our role repertoire is expanded. Our vocabulary and actions are expanded.
    Approximately one in five people aged between 16 and 24 are unemployed. This has
    given way to labelling of people the new NEETS (not in education employment or
    training). How does this feel as a human being to be labelled in this way? If we are not
    in education and/or employment there is no way for the role-system to be expanded this
    will lead us into isolation as our communication skills remain limited. We may form
    unhealthy attachments with likeminded people who also have no role-system.




   Children learn roles through characters in games with others. This is fine until we
    remove the child from the child he needs to be building roles with and we place the child
    alone in a room with a computer and he supplements his role-building journey from the
    real to the fantastical and continues building roles virtually. Alone with no human
    contact.




   Roles in virtual games are not sufficient building blocks. Virtual characters do not display
    empathic qualities. Empathy can only be built through interactions with other human
    beings.

   Parents have been warned about excessive texting in children. There are phrases like
    Internet addicts appearing. New words are appearing in our vocabulary, hyper-texters,
    hypernetworking and a new disorder called Divided Attention Disorder or DAD linked to
    an overloading of information. We can harness the dynamics of this divided attention
    and use it as a positive learning tool.


   The amount of information we receive may exceed the limits of our capacity to learn and
    hold information so this may cause memory problems. By harnessing the attributes of
    how the mind is working in the external world we can re-align ourselves internally at the
    same time. We can develop alongside a new method of being in the world. It is also
    suggested that vast amounts of information and communication may damage/change
    the part of the brain called the pre-frontal cortex.




   The id and the ego are in reversal.




   The ego is becoming weakened and fragmented due to the acceleration of information
    input into the brain.




   The id is becoming more powerful because of the acceleration of the drive behind the
    evolution of entrepreneurship.


   There is one thing that is fundamental for human learning and that is face-to-face
    interaction which enables the function of the mirror neuron system. The mirror neuron
    system was considered in the late 80’s and studies began in the 90’s. This is a key to our
    evolution and if this is forced out of functioning by our so called new improved means of
    communication we are destined to return to an animalistic nature, governed only by fear
    and isolation. The most important function of the mirror neuron system is that it
    facilitates our ability to empathize. Empathy is the ability to distinguish and, to some
    extent, share feelings that are being experienced by others. Young people today are
    committing horrific crimes at an ever increasing rate. This is due to a growing epidemic
    of the lack of empathy or what we may choose to call empathic depression.

    In the Edge of Reason: Science and Religion in Modern Society published in 2008 it
    states that:


                     “Enthusiasm for mirror neurons explanatory power has gained
                momentum in the past few years as dozens of published studies have linked
                them to language, imitation, autism and empathy. If Ramachandran,
                Iacoboni and the hundreds of other neuroscientists now pouring over mirror
                neurons are correct, directly sharing the experience of others, what mirror
                theorists call ‘embodied simulation,’ is key to who and what we are, how our
                brains and minds evolved, and how they develop from childhood” (2008:66)


    In Mirror Neuron Systems: the Role of Mirroring Processes in Social Cognition published
    in 2009 we read that:


                “While 15 years ago, a neuroscientific understanding of our capacity to
                intuitively understand other individuals was unthinkable, scientific
                discoveries’ over the last decade start to outline the skeleton of a unifying
                theory of intuitive social cognition”. (2009:32)


    It goes on to say:


                “While we witness the actions, emotions, and sensations of other Individuals,
                our brain spontaneously recreates a pattern of neural activity that resembles
                that while we perform similar actions or have similar sensations and
                emotions. At the neural level, this appears to occur through networks of
                brain areas shared between the experience of actions, sensations and
                emotions and the observation of these states in others” (2009:32)


    We can see the valuable impact that this new study of the evolution of the human brain
    has on our understanding of behaviour. The study of the Mirror Neuron System has to be
    taken seriously for our development.


   The brain is controlled by an intricate network of processes that need to link together in
    order for the whole system to function coherently. If we are absorbing too much
    information at any one time, our ability to understand and assimilate is affected. This
    creates a distortion of the interface that we have with the external world. We interact
    with the world through the system known as the ego. If the ego is not stable then
    interaction with others becomes difficult. If we are learning in this new fragmented way

    the ego has little time to stabilize and interactions become dysfunctional very quickly.
    By building a role-system we can stabilize the ego. If we are not linking things together
    we are heading into fragmentation and instability. People are starting to communicate in
    a fragmented way that affects language and behaviour.


   Behaviour is only developed through the expansion of our role repertoire and our
    interaction with others as stated above. If we are learning in a fragmented way, our
    Roles are not developing in a healthy way. Roles are primarily made up of vocabulary
    and action. They may be called chains of thought or thought channels.


   The human body produces energy, which effects how the nervous system functions and
    develops, we need to pay close attention to this. The state of the nervous system is a
    key factor in our ability to learn. By learning a role-system we develop subtle nuances of
    the nervous system as every role activates the nervous system in a different way.


   If we can harness the energy of the nervous system we can develop a powerful learning
    vehicle.


   We need to focus on Role expansion, increase, evolvement, empowerment,
    improvement, growth, and health. It is only through role development that we increase
    our vocabulary.


   We must learn to be both leaders who observe and participators that follow, we must be
    participators that lead and leaders that follow. This can only be achieved through the
    learning and understanding of “roles.”


   The vibration of consciousness controls human behaviour. Vibration is governed by cause
    and effect. Cause and effect dictates the levels of interaction between people. Therefore
    it is vital that we study and observe how we behave as individuals and as communication
    beings. We need to utilize the Mirror Neuron System by studied interaction with others.


   Behaviours build roles and roles build behaviours.


   The working system is changing we are moving to a point in time where jobs are
    becoming scarce. We are still in an education system that is geared towards helping
    people into the working framework. We are moving towards a new framework, which
    may well mean that there are fewer and fewer jobs. If this is the case and it can plainly
    be seen, we need to adopt a new learning strategy not that of learning to work but that

    of learning behaviour. We need an adequate role repertoire to enable us to communicate
    with each other in a functional way. We learn roles through the working environment.
    We learn programming through education.




   If you overload an electrical circuit with power it will incur a fault of some kind. At the
    present time information is being blasted at our brains in simultaneous streams and the
    human brain is indeed an electrical circuit.


   Jobs are becoming in short supply what happens to people’s role development if they
    don’t have jobs?


   We have to find an alternative new way of training. We have to build a new system of
    learning. A system that does not train people for work necessarily but a system geared
    towards learning how to behave. Behaviour training. If we can build an adequate Role –
    System we can be understood by others hence the importance of the findings of the
    mirror neuron system and the need for communication through roles. We cannot learn
    empathy through social media or electronic programming this is proven by the findings
    of the Mirror Neuron System. We need continued social face to face learning and
    integration. We need an education system that empowers people to develop themselves.



    Where can this Model be used?


    It can be used in Education and any Social or Psychological rehabilitation services.




    What are the core principles?


    1st is stabilization of the ego. (Even by reading this book your ego will be strengthened
    because it describes a journey of ego formulation and your brain will re-member the
    structure and grow from that).
    2nd is stabilization of the ego through role development.
    3rd is stabilization of the ego through role development and integration with others.
    4th is stabilization of the ego through role development and integration with others into
    a role-system.

   5th is having some understanding of the Mirror Neuron System (MNS) in relation to a
   role-system.


   In the Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology 14.9 Language page 189, it states:


   “The MNS in essence is a mechanism that creates a direct link between the sender
   of a message and its receiver. Thanks to this system, actions performed by other
   individuals become messages that are understood by an observer without any
   cognitive mediation.”


   It goes on to say:


   “On the basis of this fundamental property Rizzolatti and Arbib (1998) proposed
   that the mirror mechanism underlies language evolution.”


   6th is to have some awareness of the Nervous System (NS) and how this affects our
   interactions with others.


   In the Collins Concise Dictionary page 893 the definition of Nervous System is:
           “Nervous System n. The sensory and control apparatus of animals,
   consisting of a network of neurons.”



   The component parts used to activate the core
   principles.


   Observer
   Participator
   Joker
   Facilitator
   Storyteller
   Supervisor


   Each role we develop in this case is crafted in a particular way to stabilize growth.


1) The observer is working on the external world.
2) The participator is working on the internal world.

   3) The joker is enabling us create the fluidity for us to be able to move backwards
       and forwards from observer to participator in any given moment in time.
   4) The facilitator is the assistant function.
   5) The storyteller keeps an account of the story being told in the now.
   6) The supervisor is put in place to oversee the entire process and is a personal
       assessment tool.


The ideal is that once the role system is activated all of the above component parts
become active at the same time so that we have a full and rounded understanding of
being in time and space and our ego becomes more stable as a result.



How does this Work?


We need to observe and participate in what we are doing at the same time. The joker or
trickster enables us to become more flexible by activating our shape shifting abilities so
the movement between the observer and the participator viewpoints is more efficient.
We need to be able to facilitate this movement for ourselves. If we can, then we are
more able to tell our stories as coherent journeys; finally we need to be able to
supervise our established actions in the now. If this is achieved then our ego becomes
stabilized. We interact better. We communicate better. We behave better. We are
better. We have enabled the self-parenting function.


      This study is the result of the exploration of my journey into purpose. This has
been achieved by perseverance, and nothing can stand in the way of perseverance. We
must walk the path, even if it is of difficulty, if it is, and it often is, then we must walk
the path of trust. We may not feel able at times. We may not feel worthy at times, but it
is just a journey. We must be ready to let the creation and other people help us on the
way. We must proceed with the tools that we have. The tools are what our life journey
produces. What is most interesting is not that a process has evolved, but what and how
it evolved. We must learn to walk in vulnerability. This means that we must drop false
ego states, ways of behaviour that we think are right. Ways of being that the mind
produces in order to survive. We must learn to be soul driven and not ego driven. By
this I mean that our soul is travelling in the human vehicle that we are. The soul needs
to develop ego states that help to illuminate purpose; it is a way of structuring the brain
into segments of expression. If we become soul driven we are focused by purpose and
not ego. As a contradiction we are going to be talking about ego stabilization through

role development. We are bound by the confines of the human vehicle, we have to learn
to develop within this constraint.


It is our legacy to enable our soul’s purpose by the way we develop ego states. The way
we formulate ourselves in order to deliver our message.


We must learn to allow our uniqueness to evolve by enabling ego states that facilitate
our journey rather than ego states that we develop to conceal our behaviour. We must
learn to express our ‘selves’ we are creative beings. When we are in alignment with our
soul, and our ego state (the way we present ourselves in the now) is facilitating our
purpose it brings us in line with the truth which is unique to us. This brings us
confidence and unity. We strengthen our energy field.


So we reach the beginning. It has taken me along time to accept that we just reach a
series of beginnings. This was a really frustrating realization and continues to frustrate
me. We can refine the moment we are in and we can work with those refinements in the
now. But that is all that is. We reach the next moment with the knowledge and
refinements that have come through from the last and we continue like this.


My personal challenge has been to bring this incredible mechanism the human mind
under control. I have spent many years refining my own behaviour and the difficulties

and reaches the greatness of all.

  • 2. This is an extract of the book soon to be published Preface This book is the consequence of 22 years of theoretical and practical study. This work has been compiled for people who would like to know how an idea is formed. It is composed for people who would like to read my memoirs. The model itself is intended for use by Therapists, Theatre Practitioners, Psychologists and Philosophers. I would like to believe that I wasn’t biased toward any particular discipline although some knowledge of Drama (specifically Forum Theatre) would advantageous. It is an expansion of Augusto Boals “Forum theatre” which came out of his acclaimed work “The Theatre of the Oppressed “I have called this model ‘The Micro-Forum Technique’ which is fundamentally Forum Theatre in small groups. It has been a journey of observation, participation and reflection. It is a study of human development fuelled by my need to explore and expand my own behaviour primarily. It is only through one’s own expansion that human development can be assessed. As the journey unfolded it became increasingly clearer that a method of behaviour development was emerging. The method of Behaviour is driven by the model that I have developed called ' The Micro-Forum Technique ' as stated above it is largely based on the work of Augusto Boal the great Brazilian theatre director and politician. Included is work developed by George Wilhelm Hegel and Carl Gustav Jung. These three great pioneers have helped shape this work. As the emerging story of my own journey unfolds we see how the development of a new model is formed. We see the struggles that it takes to achieve this and we see the long and hazardous route that a process has to go through to come into being. iii
  • 3. It is with honour that I present this work……… This work is a culmination of the essence of beings from past and present and into the future……………. Refinement requires time patience and methodology. I have come to understand the requirement of these things and are prepared to wait and wait and wait again when necessary …………….. I can offer no right answers only true questions and more time …………….. I can only deliver these messages through the essence of leadership and hope to influence those that are willing and able to expand consciousness………….. Only those with will and patience can accomplish these duties it is not easy……………….. A point has come that necessitates great change……………. Human consciousness is expanding at a rate faster than the human mind can manage………………… Therefore, new systems, new ways of understanding need to be established in order for the human mind to cope, to reintegrate, and to continue expanding………………... There is always hope……………… True greatness can only be achieved through integrating with silence……………... Silence is becoming scarce. Energy waves are becoming multiplied and multiplied again…………... Energy sources are becoming multiplied and multiplied again…………………. The nature of humanity is changing…………………. Therefore the structure of humanity needs to change…………………….. We can only communicate through those who are willing to integrate with silence…………………... Knowledge can only be gained through this…………………… Noise distracts us from our silence; energy forms distract us from our silence……………………. We must proceed with caution………………….. We must proceed with silence. A long enough silence that we may hear our own voice.   • 4. 1 This is an extract of the book to be published Introduction I assert definitely, that a school book is only good when an uninstructed schoolmaster can use it at need, (almost as well as an instructed and talented one.) It must essentially be so arranged that uninstructed men, and even Mothers, may find in its clues sufficient help to bring them always one step nearer than the child, to that progressive development of skill to which they are leading him. Johann Henrich Pestalozzi (2010:41) Following the E.Y.E (Engage your Education) To find The W.H.Y (What + How = Y) To Start Let us know from the very beginning that everything can have infinite levels of meaning it is our own choice. We can choose to excavate for more meaning or we can pass by for less meaning. It is our own choice. The problem we have, is trying to understand that which is impossible to fully understand, our own minds. If we are to believe the findings of quantum physics we have to know that by observing something it changes. So by finding meaning and observing it, it will change in some way revealing another level of meaning and so on. Now let us dissect the title a little and find out the meaning that I have given it ……
  • 5. 2 Following the Eye My first level of understanding of this is that the eye is concerned with the instinct. We can say that the instinct is that which is pure and unpolluted by circumstance. If we trace back our journey deleting all our experience in the world we come to the pure form of ourselves the part of us that knows, the part of us that holds a key to our being in the world, our purpose. We can describe it as a gut feeling. We can describe it as a longing for something. We can describe it as a niggling feeling. We can describe it as a sense of belonging to a higher purpose. We can describe it as the spiritual path. We can describe it as an essence of ourselves. We can describe it as the base of our belief system. We can describe it as a calling from a distance. This is a poem written about my experience of it. The Call My mind is rolling round What is?................. The inner cathedral The inner sanctum lined with formless wealth Moving slowly Filling every imagined space With featherlike smoke I follow this entity which is not. As all I am, is within. All I was, inside, rolling, filling What happens now? I feel a craving a must A formless chant Haunting my yearning My love, my life, my labour. How is it that I must follow? This seamless barren place That calls me, Cry’s at me, Ever whining for furtherance
  • 6. 3 All will be revealed When and to whom? And still I follow and still I am Still. We can now mention the third eye. We describe that as the place in between our two physical eyes. Some say this is a seat of wisdom and gives access to our higher self? In ancient culture the third eye was said to be in or near to the pineal gland located at the centre of the brain in between the two hemispheres. The pineal gland's location deep in the brain seems to imply hidden meaning. It was considered a mystery related to spirituality and wisdom. The physical presence of the eye within our head is also the observer and the participator of our being in the world. Within the human eye is a micro-processor called the Retina. The Retina is a remarkable micro-processing system it detects distance of objects and adjusts itself accordingly. It measures the weight and length of light photons which come into the eye. It then orders what are known as rods and cones into formation with detailed information that is then sent via the optic nerve into the brain. It is a miracle of creation. (Interestingly enough we will be using a cone shape to explore the form of an archetype later in this work) E.Y.E. (Engage your Education) It has taken a long time to reach this point in my process, as my relationship with education has been a battle. I felt unable to learn for a long time and was and still am quite resistant to it (it takes determination to expand ones thought process). Although, I have grown to love learning and I relish the incredible ability I have as a human being to learn in whatever way I choose. I am so glad that I engaged my education. It is a miracle. The human brain is limitless in possibility. We can almost achieve anything if we are prepared to enter into relationship with ourselves but it requires self-parenting. By that I mean that we have to take responsibility for our growth. It takes time and effort to find meaning and understanding within ourselves, we have to enable the hidden purposeful self and harness the human being that we are and learn to understand our journey. The journey is by and large guided by the interactions we establish with other human beings. It is seemingly a mystery and a task. Many people do not embark on this journey. It takes time to realize that we have the ability to shape our journey in our own
  • 7. 4 way. Unfortunately human beings have a few design faults. Our biggest fault is that we are given to lethargy; it is hard to break free from this. Our other fault (if you can call it a fault) is our greatest opponent the need to be loved at all cost mostly to our peril do we often not find the love that we crave, because we don’t really understand love. It is often said that we need to love ourselves. Most people spend their entire lives looking for love, when all the time it is our life purpose that is the love that is most fulfilling and this is the route to loving ourselves. The human brain is a fusion of 100 billion neurons with over 15 trillion connections and it takes great pain to separate neurons one from another. We do this by facing our thoughts and feelings. We can then begin to understand our selves by some kind of negotiation between thoughts and feelings. We begin to engage with our education. By observing ourselves and participating with ourselves we are in a self-parenting relationship. To Find the W.H.Y. Once we start this internal negotiating we start to uncover the why. What the thoughts and feelings are about. We begin to uncover our belief system, which leads us to our purpose. The way to this is to find out what we don’t believe in, this seems to be an easier route as our sense of what we don’t believe in is slightly more powerful than what we do believe in it seems. This is certainly true for me anyway. The belief system is directly connected to our purpose and if we can engage our education to illuminate our belief system then we find our purpose. Once we uncover what we do believe in we can bring it into consciousness and enable that to be our guide if you like. This can be a long process but there is nothing more valuable. W.H.Y. What + How = Y Once we discover that we are able to learn and negotiate learning within ourselves we begin to know what we are about. We begin to know how to learn in our own way. Everybody learns in a slightly different way it would seem if we are to believe Jung’s theories on psychological types. We are all unique and individual, once we start to develop that uniqueness and enquiry there is a realisation. It is only you that can learn for yourself, it is only you that can parent yourself ultimately. It is only when we choose to engage our education on whatever level that we find out why and we find what and how. This is Y. But, we have to choose it. We have to choose again and again, because
  • 8. 5 it is an ongoing journey of development. We are the drivers in our own lives and as my very good friend says ‘the buck starts and stops with you’ so true. The Beginning This book is an exploration of my own journey and growth through education and self- parenting, into the expression of an educational and psychological developmental tool called ‘The Micro-Forum Technique’ which is a role-expansion system. I have found that by developing a role- system within myself I have been able to self-parent, which is basically creating a dialogue with oneself. I have experienced many roles, and on reflection I came to a point that posed a question? Why have I developed so many different roles within myself and why? I started to look at my behaviour in a different way and asked more questions. I realised that the development of a role- system has helped me integrate with a great many people. It has enabled me to become very adaptable and able to communicate in a more functional way and also I have learned skills that have helped me to parent myself i.e. learning to cook. Roles are a combination of vocabulary and action. Vocabulary being equated with the ongoing organizing thought process; and action being more equated with emotions released as a consequence of thought. These things have expanded my consciousness and stabilized my identity creating a useful set of tools. I have therefore; through my experiences and work practise developed a way of expanding a role- system. This has been a discovery made through the refining of my belief system and following the call and the journey of self-parenting. Role 1. A protective persona, a tough shield protecting a susceptible and sensitive personality. 2. A role maybe fixed on another by a group, in order to influence the individual into a socially accepted norm. 3. The role could be an illustration of a healthier identity, an ideal toward which the deficient identity strives for. 4. Is a set of possible behaviours.
  • 9. 6 As Mead in Landy (1993:22) is clear to point out as a social scientist: "It is generally recognised that the specifically social expressions of intelligence, or the exercise of what is often called "social intelligence" depend upon the given individual's ability to take the roles of, or "put himself in the place of", the other individuals implicated with him in given social situations; and upon his consequent sensitivity to their attitudes toward himself and toward one another." (1934: 141) By introducing different role "types" or "parts" avenues of thought process can be adjusted and enhanced through negotiation with self and others. System 1. Is a whole made up of several component parts that work together. 2. The Concise Collins Dictionary definition of the word system is 1. A group or combination of interrelated, interdependent, or interacting elements forming a collective entity; a methodical or co-ordinated assemblage of parts, facts, etc. 3. Therefore a role-system is a method that organizes behaviours. It is essential to have an expanded role system for three primary reasons. 1. To be able to interact with others in work and play. 2. To be able to structure the brain. 3. To create an identity. By structuring ourselves through a role- system we become more skilful and flexible and we come under control of our ‘selves’. The selves of the personality are created through the roles that we develop in life. Each role we develop carries a unique formulation of vocabulary and action associated with that role. The role system that I have developed is called ‘The Micro- Forum Technique’ and is based on the ‘Forum Theatre’ model conceived by Augusto Boal.
  • 10. 7 Brief Introduction to Forum Theatre The work of Augusto Boal has influenced theatre artists, social workers, psychologist’s, educators and political activists all over the world. His visionary techniques encourage spectators: active participants rehearsing strategies for change. In pure Forum Theatre, a group of people work together/brainstorm ideas to identify an area of oppression that they would like to challenge. It may of course, be their own oppression. When a theme has been elected, the group devises a small play which the oppression that they have identified is illustrated to a participating audience. The play is acted out and presented to an audience. It is then repeated until someone in the audience is moved to initiate change within the action. The audience member is encouraged to come onto the stage and play out their solution. Solutions are played within a given time frame. This is a very basic outline of the form. Forum Theatre grew out of Boals’ theatre of the oppressed. In South America in the 1970’s Augusto Boal witnessed political unrest and oppression and in reaction developed a style of theatre practise to address some of the issues that were pertinent in that society at that time. The object was to enable the people to look at their oppression through a theatrical form. To transform the perceptions of the people, to generate action with the public. By looking at problems by taking action in the form of dramatic representations the people were empowered to change or to acknowledge their own ability for change. By adapting the structure of Forum Theatre it has been possible to expand its great efficiency as a tool of behavioural change. It has been possible to adapt the structure into a small group formation that I have called ‘The Micro-Forum Technique’, creating an arena that is contained and efficient at structuring a role development system. Some observations:  Life is getting faster and faster and will reach a crescendo point soon when we will feel that we have lost control. By the implementation of an adequate role-system subtle nuances of the nervous system become informed and we gain control over ourselves.
  • 11. 8  As humans we only have a limited capacity and this is governed by our nervous system. The broader the role-system the greater control we have over the nervous system.  More than a third of young people in the UK aged 16 to 24 do not feel part of their local community. Having an expanded role-system aids our communication skills.  If we expand our minds and our experience through the development of a/the role- system we have access to greater awareness and knowledge. We are able to communicate with a broader range of people which leads us to greater awareness of self and others.  Young people feel separated from the people around them. Role-systems enable greater integrative abilities. Being part of a community and interacting with a mix of people is a crucial part of a young person's development. We are more able to mix with a range of others if our role repertoire is expanded. Our vocabulary and actions are expanded. Approximately one in five people aged between 16 and 24 are unemployed. This has given way to labelling of people the new NEETS (not in education employment or training). How does this feel as a human being to be labelled in this way? If we are not in education and/or employment there is no way for the role-system to be expanded this will lead us into isolation as our communication skills remain limited. We may form unhealthy attachments with likeminded people who also have no role-system.  Children learn roles through characters in games with others. This is fine until we remove the child from the child he needs to be building roles with and we place the child alone in a room with a computer and he supplements his role-building journey from the real to the fantastical and continues building roles virtually. Alone with no human contact.  Roles in virtual games are not sufficient building blocks. Virtual characters do not display empathic qualities. Empathy can only be built through interactions with other human beings.
  • 12. 9  Parents have been warned about excessive texting in children. There are phrases like Internet addicts appearing. New words are appearing in our vocabulary, hyper-texters, hypernetworking and a new disorder called Divided Attention Disorder or DAD linked to an overloading of information. We can harness the dynamics of this divided attention and use it as a positive learning tool.  The amount of information we receive may exceed the limits of our capacity to learn and hold information so this may cause memory problems. By harnessing the attributes of how the mind is working in the external world we can re-align ourselves internally at the same time. We can develop alongside a new method of being in the world. It is also suggested that vast amounts of information and communication may damage/change the part of the brain called the pre-frontal cortex.  The id and the ego are in reversal.  The ego is becoming weakened and fragmented due to the acceleration of information input into the brain.  The id is becoming more powerful because of the acceleration of the drive behind the evolution of entrepreneurship.  There is one thing that is fundamental for human learning and that is face-to-face interaction which enables the function of the mirror neuron system. The mirror neuron system was considered in the late 80’s and studies began in the 90’s. This is a key to our evolution and if this is forced out of functioning by our so called new improved means of communication we are destined to return to an animalistic nature, governed only by fear and isolation. The most important function of the mirror neuron system is that it facilitates our ability to empathize. Empathy is the ability to distinguish and, to some extent, share feelings that are being experienced by others. Young people today are committing horrific crimes at an ever increasing rate. This is due to a growing epidemic of the lack of empathy or what we may choose to call empathic depression.
  • 13. 10 In the Edge of Reason: Science and Religion in Modern Society published in 2008 it states that: “Enthusiasm for mirror neurons explanatory power has gained momentum in the past few years as dozens of published studies have linked them to language, imitation, autism and empathy. If Ramachandran, Iacoboni and the hundreds of other neuroscientists now pouring over mirror neurons are correct, directly sharing the experience of others, what mirror theorists call ‘embodied simulation,’ is key to who and what we are, how our brains and minds evolved, and how they develop from childhood” (2008:66) In Mirror Neuron Systems: the Role of Mirroring Processes in Social Cognition published in 2009 we read that: “While 15 years ago, a neuroscientific understanding of our capacity to intuitively understand other individuals was unthinkable, scientific discoveries’ over the last decade start to outline the skeleton of a unifying theory of intuitive social cognition”. (2009:32) It goes on to say: “While we witness the actions, emotions, and sensations of other Individuals, our brain spontaneously recreates a pattern of neural activity that resembles that while we perform similar actions or have similar sensations and emotions. At the neural level, this appears to occur through networks of brain areas shared between the experience of actions, sensations and emotions and the observation of these states in others” (2009:32) We can see the valuable impact that this new study of the evolution of the human brain has on our understanding of behaviour. The study of the Mirror Neuron System has to be taken seriously for our development.  The brain is controlled by an intricate network of processes that need to link together in order for the whole system to function coherently. If we are absorbing too much information at any one time, our ability to understand and assimilate is affected. This creates a distortion of the interface that we have with the external world. We interact with the world through the system known as the ego. If the ego is not stable then interaction with others becomes difficult. If we are learning in this new fragmented way
  • 14. 11 the ego has little time to stabilize and interactions become dysfunctional very quickly. By building a role-system we can stabilize the ego. If we are not linking things together we are heading into fragmentation and instability. People are starting to communicate in a fragmented way that affects language and behaviour.  Behaviour is only developed through the expansion of our role repertoire and our interaction with others as stated above. If we are learning in a fragmented way, our Roles are not developing in a healthy way. Roles are primarily made up of vocabulary and action. They may be called chains of thought or thought channels.  The human body produces energy, which effects how the nervous system functions and develops, we need to pay close attention to this. The state of the nervous system is a key factor in our ability to learn. By learning a role-system we develop subtle nuances of the nervous system as every role activates the nervous system in a different way.  If we can harness the energy of the nervous system we can develop a powerful learning vehicle.  We need to focus on Role expansion, increase, evolvement, empowerment, improvement, growth, and health. It is only through role development that we increase our vocabulary.  We must learn to be both leaders who observe and participators that follow, we must be participators that lead and leaders that follow. This can only be achieved through the learning and understanding of “roles.”  The vibration of consciousness controls human behaviour. Vibration is governed by cause and effect. Cause and effect dictates the levels of interaction between people. Therefore it is vital that we study and observe how we behave as individuals and as communication beings. We need to utilize the Mirror Neuron System by studied interaction with others.  Behaviours build roles and roles build behaviours.  The working system is changing we are moving to a point in time where jobs are becoming scarce. We are still in an education system that is geared towards helping people into the working framework. We are moving towards a new framework, which may well mean that there are fewer and fewer jobs. If this is the case and it can plainly be seen, we need to adopt a new learning strategy not that of learning to work but that
  • 15. 12 of learning behaviour. We need an adequate role repertoire to enable us to communicate with each other in a functional way. We learn roles through the working environment. We learn programming through education.  If you overload an electrical circuit with power it will incur a fault of some kind. At the present time information is being blasted at our brains in simultaneous streams and the human brain is indeed an electrical circuit.  Jobs are becoming in short supply what happens to people’s role development if they don’t have jobs?  We have to find an alternative new way of training. We have to build a new system of learning. A system that does not train people for work necessarily but a system geared towards learning how to behave. Behaviour training. If we can build an adequate Role – System we can be understood by others hence the importance of the findings of the mirror neuron system and the need for communication through roles. We cannot learn empathy through social media or electronic programming this is proven by the findings of the Mirror Neuron System. We need continued social face to face learning and integration. We need an education system that empowers people to develop themselves. Where can this Model be used? It can be used in Education and any Social or Psychological rehabilitation services. What are the core principles? 1st is stabilization of the ego. (Even by reading this book your ego will be strengthened because it describes a journey of ego formulation and your brain will re-member the structure and grow from that). 2nd is stabilization of the ego through role development. 3rd is stabilization of the ego through role development and integration with others. 4th is stabilization of the ego through role development and integration with others into a role-system.
  • 16. 13 5th is having some understanding of the Mirror Neuron System (MNS) in relation to a role-system. In the Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology 14.9 Language page 189, it states: “The MNS in essence is a mechanism that creates a direct link between the sender of a message and its receiver. Thanks to this system, actions performed by other individuals become messages that are understood by an observer without any cognitive mediation.” It goes on to say: “On the basis of this fundamental property Rizzolatti and Arbib (1998) proposed that the mirror mechanism underlies language evolution.” 6th is to have some awareness of the Nervous System (NS) and how this affects our interactions with others. In the Collins Concise Dictionary page 893 the definition of Nervous System is: “Nervous System n. The sensory and control apparatus of animals, consisting of a network of neurons.” The component parts used to activate the core principles. Observer Participator Joker Facilitator Storyteller Supervisor Each role we develop in this case is crafted in a particular way to stabilize growth. 1) The observer is working on the external world. 2) The participator is working on the internal world.
  • 17. 14 3) The joker is enabling us create the fluidity for us to be able to move backwards and forwards from observer to participator in any given moment in time. 4) The facilitator is the assistant function. 5) The storyteller keeps an account of the story being told in the now. 6) The supervisor is put in place to oversee the entire process and is a personal assessment tool. The ideal is that once the role system is activated all of the above component parts become active at the same time so that we have a full and rounded understanding of being in time and space and our ego becomes more stable as a result. How does this Work? We need to observe and participate in what we are doing at the same time. The joker or trickster enables us to become more flexible by activating our shape shifting abilities so the movement between the observer and the participator viewpoints is more efficient. We need to be able to facilitate this movement for ourselves. If we can, then we are more able to tell our stories as coherent journeys; finally we need to be able to supervise our established actions in the now. If this is achieved then our ego becomes stabilized. We interact better. We communicate better. We behave better. We are better. We have enabled the self-parenting function. This study is the result of the exploration of my journey into purpose. This has been achieved by perseverance, and nothing can stand in the way of perseverance. We must walk the path, even if it is of difficulty, if it is, and it often is, then we must walk the path of trust. We may not feel able at times. We may not feel worthy at times, but it is just a journey. We must be ready to let the creation and other people help us on the way. We must proceed with the tools that we have. The tools are what our life journey produces. What is most interesting is not that a process has evolved, but what and how it evolved. We must learn to walk in vulnerability. This means that we must drop false ego states, ways of behaviour that we think are right. Ways of being that the mind produces in order to survive. We must learn to be soul driven and not ego driven. By this I mean that our soul is travelling in the human vehicle that we are. The soul needs to develop ego states that help to illuminate purpose; it is a way of structuring the brain into segments of expression. If we become soul driven we are focused by purpose and not ego. As a contradiction we are going to be talking about ego stabilization through
  • 18. 15 role development. We are bound by the confines of the human vehicle, we have to learn to develop within this constraint. It is our legacy to enable our soul’s purpose by the way we develop ego states. The way we formulate ourselves in order to deliver our message. We must learn to allow our uniqueness to evolve by enabling ego states that facilitate our journey rather than ego states that we develop to conceal our behaviour. We must learn to express our ‘selves’ we are creative beings. When we are in alignment with our soul, and our ego state (the way we present ourselves in the now) is facilitating our purpose it brings us in line with the truth which is unique to us. This brings us confidence and unity. We strengthen our energy field. So we reach the beginning. It has taken me along time to accept that we just reach a series of beginnings. This was a really frustrating realization and continues to frustrate me. We can refine the moment we are in and we can work with those refinements in the now. But that is all that is. We reach the next moment with the knowledge and refinements that have come through from the last and we continue like this. My personal challenge has been to bring this incredible mechanism the human mind under control. I have spent many years refining my own behaviour and the difficulties that I have experienced as a consequence. Along with the illumination of my internal world comes the exploration of the external world that the internal world inhabits. The outcome of continued exploration can only lead to ones greatness which in turn leads and reaches the greatness of all. So let us follow the journey from the beginning or the first beginning if you like. I shall call the chapters foundations as it is a journey of building foundations one to the next so it would seem and we will uncover the ‘Micro-Forum Technique’. Thank you.
