Fail Unacceptable documentation has been handed in. Poor presentation of
(< 40%) material. Little original contribution to presented work. Significant areas
omitted or treated superficially. Basic understanding of issues in computer
systems has not been demonstrated.

PASS A report that covers the basic requirements but does not show much evidence
(40% - 59%) of reading around or synthesis of material. All major areas have been
addressed or deficiencies in one or more areas are compensated by good work
in another area.

MERIT A good report showing evidence of wide research, and shows evidence of
(60% - 69%) synthesis of information from a range of sources. Understanding of the use of
the devices and their place in the computing hierarchy is demonstrated Good
understanding of systems is demonstrated

DISTINCTION A well presented report that shows a good understanding of the development
(70% +) of the current state of systems. Insight into the future development of these
devices and areas requiring future development is presented.

Title

• Must describe the paper and answer the research question
• Should be accurate enough
• Limited number characters (typically. 120)


Abstract
• It will be read by any interested reader to have an idea about the
paper
– Many e-sources display the abstract only abstract
• is a preview/outline of the content
• Abstract: A one-paragraph description of the whole project – obje
ctives and results – that can be read by itself to help someone to de
cide if it is worth reading the whole paper .


Abstract
Observe several formal rules:
• Usually one or (at most) two paragraphs
• Word limit: Typically 100-300 words
• The material in the abstract should NOT be repeated later
verbatim in the paper
• Does not act as an introduction


Keywords
• Think about what kind of search items you would want leading
to your paper.
• Use many!!
– So your paper can be found
– You will be cited a lot


Introduction
Introduction carry out the following roles:
• Describes the problem description and places it in context.
• Literature perspective with related work: overview of what
others have done and why it is inadequate
• Explains connections with any previous work, identifies
knowledge gap
• Provides background and explains relevant theories
• Describes objectives, research question and hypotheses clearly
• Explains briefly what you will do & why the study is being
carried out
• Explains briefly how the paper is structured [signposting]


Introduction

1. What is the problem?
2. Why is it interesting and important?
3. Why is it hard?
4. Why hasn't it been solved before? (Or, what is wrong with
previously proposed solutions?)


INTRODUCTION

• First paragraph: crucial for catching the attention of
the readers and for conveying to them the importance
of the research questions addressed in the paper.
• Last paragraph should be a brief account of what you
set out to do and what you have achieved.
• Introduction: A short description in relatively non-tec
hnical language of why the project was undertaken.


Body

• Objectives: The reason for your research – the hypothesis you
want to test.
• Literature Review: A summary of the literature you have
read that is related to your project, with comments as to how
this fits with your own proposed work.
• Methodology: The way you did the work, to test the hypothesis.
• Work Plan: The schedule of activities required to fulfill the met
hodology.
• Results: The figures or observations that come from your work.


Conclusion

• Your observations on these results –
 do they confirm the hypothesis,
 how might they be improved,
 what further work might be helpful.
 Hopefully your Conclusions can largely echo your original
Objectives.
