Editor's Notes

  1. The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not academic excellence, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of experience. What distinguishes star performers from the mediocre is emotional intelligence.
  2. Emotion is, in everyday speech, a person's state of feeling in the sense of an affect. Why (oh why) were we made to feel so much? The popular answer is the evolutionary one--that emotions have helped us survive. When we lived in the wild--with monkeys and tigers--we needed emotions in order to react quickly to dangerous stimuli. We developed an emotional system because it could induce quick responses to danger  We likely have emotions because they help us survive. But they also tend to drive us crazy when given too much reign. After all, the other reason why we developed emotion is that emotion helps build relationships and bind communities. We would not be able to coordinate our goals so well if we did not love and fear and trust and feel a sense of pride.
  3. Now lets talk about classifying emotions. According to Glasgow university study, there are basically four human emotions. The other emotions may be the results of mixing these emotions. For eg. your friends call you with a name you hate, you feel irritated. Irritation is the feeling of being mad and sad. I am happy that I got Xbox as birthday present. I am scared of natural calamities like earthquakes and tsunamis which costs human lives. They say, the perfect person is not real and real person is not perfect. So as Shakespeare said, to err is human. Humans are wired to do crazy things, so we all are on the same side.
  4. Lets define what’s EI..The emotional intelligence was coined in early 1990s. The pioneer research was published by Daniel Goleman in 1995, NY Times best seller ‘ Emotional Intelligence.
  5. An emotional competence is a learned capability based on emotional intelligence that results in outstanding performance at work. There are many paths to excellence. Personal Competence. The 25 emotional competencies fall into five categories. The first three categories contain personal competencies, which determine how we manage ourselves: • Self-Awareness: Knowing one’s internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. Self-awareness competencies include emotional awareness, accurate self assessment and self-confidence. • Self-Regulation: Managing one’s internal states, impulses and resources. This category includes self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability and innovation. • Motivation: Emotional tendencies that guide or facilitate reaching goals. Motivation competencies include achievement drive, commitment, initiative and optimism. Social Competence. The last two categories contain social competencies, which determine how we handle relationships: • Empathy: Awareness of others’ feelings, needs and concerns. Empathy competencies include understanding others, developing others, a service orientation, leveraging diversity and political awareness. • Social skills: Adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others. This category includes influence, communication, conflict management, leadership, change catalyst, building bonds, collaboration and cooperation, and team capabilities.
  6. EQ Identify, evaluate, control and express emotions ones own emotions; perceive, and assess others' emotions; use emotions to facilitate thinking, understand emotional meanings. Teamwork, leadership, successful relations, service orientation, initiative, collaboration. IQ is the ability to learn, understand and apply information to skills, logical reasoning, word comprehension, math skills, abstract and spatial thinking, filter irrelevant information. Success with challenging tasks, ability to analyze and connect the dots, research and development.
  7. Lets talk about the science of emotions and neuroscience. The amygdala is a small region is brain responsible for emotional processing  First, the brain has three areas of increasing sophistication. Our most base level is the reptilian brain, which is tied to our survival. It's constantly reading our environment for signs of danger. When it senses any, one part, called the amygdala, kicks off the fight or flight response. The amygdala is directly tied to our hormonal system and can flood the body with adrenaline and cortisol in a second. I'm sure we all remember a time when we've experienced this. It's not pleasant, but it does prepare the body to literally escape or face the danger. The mid-portion is the limbic brain, also known as our emotional brain. This system allows for more complex emotions than fear or anger. This brain sorts for broad, emotional categories, like happiness, sadness, love, and disgust. Again, our survival is tied to this portion because, we need to be able to connect with others, care for our young, and navigate social groups. This is also where our working memory lives.  The outer portion of the brain is the Neo-cortex, which is our thinking brain, also known as the executive center. It's our highest functioning state where we carry on logical analysis and effective decision making. Our emotional palette expands to include more shades of emotions. Like the difference between calm, pleased, amused, and content. More importantly, it allows us to have thoughts about emotions and to tune into much more subtle indicators than the other brains can read. Both our IQ and EQ live here. The second key finding is that when our reptilian brain kicks off, it literally shuts down the functions of the other portions of our brain, along with many other physical changes to prepare the body for battle. The amygdala had a bigger role thousands of years ago when human beings were worried about their survival every day. Life was about eat or be eaten. The amygdala senses everything you do and matches the experience with the information in your emotional memory. The emotional memory captures every experience that has ever happened to you in your life. The people, places and things are all recorded here. It is the brain’s frame of reference for future experience. It is where you essentially connect past and present. The emotional memory is also the memory of the physiological response at the time of your experiences. The responses may include anxiety, tension, increased blood pressure and other reactions associated with fear, sadness, joy and a variety of other emotions.   If you’ve had a very emotional event in your life, the brain captures the details of the experience including who, what, when, where, as well as the emotions you experienced at the time. So all of these emotional memories in your data bank have an emotion assigned to them and are expressed that way. Here’s an example: someone you have had conflict with suddenly turns the corner on the street and is coming right toward you. The amygdala takes in the information and matches this guy with recent memories. And they aren’t good! So now you have the potential for anger, fear, anxiety and other emotions bubbling to the surface. You get the picture.
