AWS re:Invent 2016: Simplify Cloud Migration with AWS Server Migration Service (ENT218)

Data center migrations are often long and complex projects that involve thousands of servers. Without automated tools, these migrations can consume hundreds of hours. The recently launched AWS Server Migration Service speeds and simplifies the migration of on-premises servers to the AWS Cloud. SMS automates incremental replication of live server volumes, speeding up the migration process and significantly reducing the manual tasks required for server migration. This session for IT managers introduces key features and benefits of SMS, and includes a demo of the SMS end-to-end workflow.

Deploy the AWS Connector (standalone VM) on VMware vCenter 2. Import vCenter VM inventory into the AWS Management Console 3. Choose VMs you want to migrate to AWS in the console 4. Configure replication for selected group of VMs (initial replication time, replication interval, license type) 5. Start replication and track the progress 6. For each VM, you will see the list of AMIs created at each replication interval

Technip Datacenter Migration A world leader in project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry (31,000 People - 45 Countries) Need to proactively plan for expiring hardware – all global datacenters Global security review found some level of security risks across all DMZ sites (50+ separate sites – 400+ servers) Challenge: Non-standard configurations, difficult to diagnose, troubleshoot and manage Objective: Consolidate to 6-8 regional DMZs, increasing consistency, security and managability.

Migration Solution To design an Infrastructure as Code solution that would allow consistent deployment of DMZ resources globally in compliance with standards and security policies • Worked with premiere AWS consultant (Flux7) to design solution based on best practices. Automation of VPC creation and basic connectivity in compliance with standards. • “Scratch” build, AWS Import and 3rd party tools to move workloads to new environments. • New service – Server Migration Service (SMS) – available end of October • Testing showed a substantial decrease in complexity and increase in flexibility using SMS.

DMZ Project Today • Globally, 400-500 servers with widely varying configurations will be migrated in 2017 • Specialized Technip team for service delivery globally • Testing – SMS replication approach allows for easy “sandbox” setup • Phased roll out – Phases not only regional…but systems within a region • SMS will reduce man-hours to move workloads from VMware to AWS…20% to 40% reduction. Single AWS GUI simplifies the entire process.
