2. Water Water is undoubtedly the most important compound to all life on Earth Ensuring the quality of water is essential to the health of humans, fish, and plants, as well as all other living organisms In this study, my focus is geared toward the history and processes of the Water Treatment Plant located at 501 Wesley Street in Greenville, Texas
3. Greenville Water Treatment Plant 1926 1stWater Treatment Plant constructed 1955 facility was upgraded capacity to process 6 MGD 1994 facility was upgraded again increased its processing capacity to 13 MGD cost $7.1 million dollars Supplies treated water to Greenville, Caddo Mills, Jacobia, Cash, & Shady Grove Manned & operated 24 hours a day
4. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Treated w/ Fluoride -average dose of 1 PPM A combination of Chlorine & Ammonia are added as a disinfectant - average dose of 3 PPM (in accordance with state and federal regulations) This Water Treatment Plant has 2 sources of raw water primary source - series of off channel reservoirs, north side of Greenville, Reservoirs #4 and #5 secondary source - Lake Tawakoni, used during the dryer seasons of the year both refilled by the Sabine River
5.
6. Greenville Water Treatment Plant 1997 & 1998, installed Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Connected the Water Treatment Plant & Waste Water Plant Improved data collection & provided operational cost savings, which also kept the cost of water services for consumers down $3.5 billion dollars to operate water systems throughout U.S.
7. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Brian Smith, Treatment Plant Superintendent gave me a tour facility on March 13th Raw water pumped via pressure system into open surfaced treatment tanks Chemicals are introduced & stirred Water is then transferred to adjacent tank Film accumulates on surface, then sinks when becomes denser than underlying water Rake at bottom scrapes gunk into drain to collecting tank
8.
9. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Collecting tank is cleaned out every 4 months Gunk placed into on-site lagoon lagoon is dredged &cleaned out every 3 to 4 years That sludgy muddy gunk is then transported to a landfill or spread out over land Sludge is not dangerous in any way does not need to be treated with any special precautions It is essentially just the particulates of dirt, organic matter, silts, and etc., that is brought in with the raw water that is filtered out Naturally present in the environment
10. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Cleaner water left behind transferred to series of other adjacent tanks to repeat the process Then the water is drained to the other side of the facility to undergo filtration
11. Greenville Water Treatment Plant The ‘filters’ used in the filtration process are a series of finely graded sand, course rocks, & Anthracite Water percolates through these layers Filters are cleaned out every 120 hours Potable (finished) water tested for 140 different factors at conclusion of treatment process &every 2hours thereafter to ensure quality
12. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Finally, water is pumped to various on-site storage tanks & water towers for public use given there are no problems that with the tests
13. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Capable of processing 13 MGD However, daily processing depends on current demand Minimal capacity day, usually during the winter months, Plant processes about 4 MGD Maximum capacity day, during the summer when everyone is washing cars & watering lawns, Plant process about 7 MGD 2 on-site tanks hold 1million gallons of water each New on-site tank holds 1.2 million gallons of water Industrial tank holds 1million gallons of water
14.
15. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Employees must : Already have 1 year experience Take 3 hydrology courses Attain a Class D Water Treatment License Employees will continue taking various water &operations courses to maintain quality &obtain higher licenses Class C, B, & A licenses Ultimately, Class A Water Treatment License can be earned, which is the highest license Optional but fully qualifies &allows independent operation
16. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Fully staffed w/ 8 employees including the superintendant only 1 technician is required to run the Plant norm for night shift Employees walk facility…to ensure volume of water & treatment chemicals used match computerized & hand written reports …visually inspecting for leaks …reading gauges …collecting & testing water samples Employees also continuously check computers, equipment, chemical tanks, &computer generated reports to ensure that everything is running correctly
17. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Mechanical & Computer Failures: Initial circulation tank’s paddle-like stirrers broke down Cost Greenville $14 thousand dollars to replace Computer meltdown, all but 2 machines computerized, major issue Reserves were draining quickly Computer programmer hired to reprogram the network of computers The Plant was out of operation for about 5 hours
19. Greenville Water Treatment Plant No significant contamination issues Minor ones are rare &handled before potable water ever leaves Plant Toxic substances such as pesticides, antifreeze, &motor oil do not seem to be an issue for the Plant Even if a vehicle does happen to crash into raw water source, contaminants become diluted by the surrounding water &removed from water supply by treatment &filtration before it ever leaves the Plant for consumer use Afew fish make it in the treatment tanks they die from the introduction of chemicals &the treatment process itself Once discovered they are quickly removed
20. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Extreme flooding causes water surplus Not an issue because water re-circulated through system &stored in on-site reserve tanks Droughts cause a deficit in water supply Major issue Expensive dredging of reservoirs to remove buildup, blockages, & silt from intake pipes Greenville participates in Conservation & Drought Contingency Plan Very detailed plan, where conditions reach certain criteria (in stages), rules implemented & enforced, & fines are assessed for violations
21. Greenville Water Treatment Plant There are various water reports on file: The City of Greenville Drinking Water Quality Report or Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) generated annually 2008 report will be publicly available in July 2009 latest information is from 2007 report lists detected contaminants & gives specific details about each one Source of contaminants Detected levels of contaminants TCEQ required levels & limitations
22.
23. Greenville Water Treatment Plant Monthly Operating Report which is an internal report generated monthly by Superintendent, Brian Smith report gives details on: monthly rainfall raw & finished flow analytical data chemical usage data finished treated water cost per 1,000 gallons monthly violations
