The role of a first aider is to provide immediate, lifesaving, medical care before the arrival of further medical help. Role of the first aider in fires: 1. Raise an alarm 2. Call the fire brigade on 1122 3. Once out remain out 4. Donโt re-enter the house 5. Cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth 6. Crawl to a safe area 7. Never use the lift, always use the fire exit 8. Turn off main electrical sloppy 9. Put sand on the fire 10. Pour water if available Role of first aider in explosions: 1. Treat injuries and shock as discussed before. 2. Watch for early features of radiation effects. 3. Arrange for a stock of two weeks of water and safe food for the victims exposed to radiation. 4. Use big drums with lids for waste disposal. 5. Use small vessels or tins with lids for human excreta disposal. 6. Use DDT or BHC as insecticides. 7. Refer the victim to a hospital. Role of first aider in floods: 1. Purified drinking water 2. Portable toilets 3. Non-perishable food 4. Clean clothing including boots, gloves and rain gear 5. Warm blankets 6. First aid kits with antiseptic supplies, bandages, cleansing soaps and anti-diarrhea medications 7. Flashlights and portable radios with extra batteries 8. Emergency tents and tarps 9. Plastic storage containers Role of first aider in earthquakes: 1. Check for injuries and apply first aid. Don't move anyone with serious injuries unless they're in immediate danger. 2. In your home, turn off electricity and water. Check for damaged wiring and fuel leaks. Don't light matches. 3. Check for broken water, sewerage and electrical mains. 4. To avoid network congestion, only use your phone to report a life-threatening situation (by calling triple-0). 5. Be aware of aftershocks. 6. Stay calm and be of assistance to others if possible Role of first aider in famine: 1. Offer medical treatment i.e; high quality medicines and urgently needed nutritional supplements for malnourished and undernourished patients. 2. Provide then hygiene products 3. Provide them mosquito nets and blankets 4. Help people to manage everyday life in the harsh surroundings 5. Provide water in urgent need, food items and medical aid.
