What do we really know.pptx

  1. What do we really know? A simple checklist
  2. Knowledge • If you know something well enough to use it, that is knowledge. • You have the knowledge of tying your shoelaces at the moment that you first understood it well enough to not get stuck whilst doing it.
  3. What is it called if you cannot use it? Information
  4. Skill • If you have used knowledge to produce a result, you have a skill. • It normally means you will be expected to produce that result again. • You have the skill of tying your shoelaces if you have done it and can do it again.
  5. Skills • Skills can be ‘forgotten’ but skills are not stored only in your mind’s memory. They can be in muscle memory too. • Your body can remember how to do something even without your conscious mind telling it what to do. You have neural pathways that are ready to work without you thinking about it.
  6. The number 1 trick to memory • Everything must have a name. • If I say Vanilla ice cream, you don’t need to think back to the last time you had it – you just know what to expect. • If I ask you to try a new flavour today, and don’t tell you what it’s called, then I asked you to remember it a week later, what would happen? You would try to remember the day you had it and what it was like. There is more work for your brain to do because you have no name for it.
