 Definition : A “novel” is a fictitious prose
tale of considerable length with characters
representing those of “real life” in a plot at
least 50,000 words .
 Characteristics of the novel :
1. A fictional prose work
2. Usually divided into chapters
3. Relatively long and often complex plot
4. Story traditionally develops through the
thoughts and actions of its characters
 Technically speaking ,a novel is a prose narrative which possesses the
following six Elements –
1. Plot
2. Character
3. Narrative (Style of presentation )
4. Time and action
5. Place of action
6. Writers Philosophy or attitude towards life
• First Time Characteristics of the novel seen into Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The
cantarbury Tales” .
 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s progress 1678
 Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719), Moll Flanders (1722)
 Jonathan Swift ‘s “Gulliver Travels” 1726 ( Four Parts )
 In 18th century 1740 Novel’s perfect form developed by Samuel Richardson .
 He was a First English Novelist Who gave first English Perfect novel “Pamela”
(1740) and second Addition “The virtue Rewarded” (1741) in form of Epistolary
Novel ( Novel is a written as a series of Documents and form of letters ).

  • 3.  Definition : A “novel” is a fictitious prose tale of considerable length with characters representing those of “real life” in a plot at least 50,000 words .  Characteristics of the novel : 1. A fictional prose work 2. Usually divided into chapters 3. Relatively long and often complex plot 4. Story traditionally develops through the thoughts and actions of its characters
  • 4.  Technically speaking ,a novel is a prose narrative which possesses the following six Elements – 1. Plot 2. Character 3. Narrative (Style of presentation ) 4. Time and action 5. Place of action 6. Writers Philosophy or attitude towards life
  • 5. • First Time Characteristics of the novel seen into Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The cantarbury Tales” .  John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s progress 1678  Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719), Moll Flanders (1722)  Jonathan Swift ‘s “Gulliver Travels” 1726 ( Four Parts )  In 18th century 1740 Novel’s perfect form developed by Samuel Richardson .  He was a First English Novelist Who gave first English Perfect novel “Pamela” (1740) and second Addition “The virtue Rewarded” (1741) in form of Epistolary Novel ( Novel is a written as a series of Documents and form of letters ).

  • 7.  He was (19 August 1689 -4 July 1761) an 18th century.  English writer and printer.  very little Education and did not go beyond English.  He Expanded the dramatic possibility of the novel by his invention and use of the letter form.  He Established the novel as we know it : a long prose narrative concerned with the actual world and the men and women who inhabit it.  He created the novel of character.
