Primarily we will be talking about Community Resilience, but first we can set the stage by discussing a few climate change issues.
A glacier in retreat. As a geologist, I would love to spend the next hour talking about glaciers, oceans, rivers and all sorts of earth systems, but instead I will just briefly show a few pictures. If the water is no longer locked up in the ice, where do you think it is going?
Briefly cover the indicators.
Going up: sea surface temperature, ocean heat content, temperature over the ocean, temperature over the land, humidity, air temperature near surface (troposphere),
Going down: sea ice mass and volume, glaciers, snow cover
Whether or not change is accelerating or being exacerbated by human activity, sea level is rising. That fact alone can and will have significant consequences.
Climate change will make storms stronger, the damage greater. Some of the impacts are slow, or chronic and can lead to additional stresses on cities.
PW has a big role and a changing role in all of these. First in, last out.
Note the addition of terrorism.
Does PW play a role in any of these? Of course we do. All of them.
First in and last out.
