GLOBAL FUTURE SOLUTIONS - HISTORY
Global Future Solutions (GFS) is an Australian biotechnology company founded in March 2009, where the idea first began to develop green technologies that are now being produced for various markets worldwide. Since its inception, GFS has forged relationships with companies worldwide, as well as being involved in global aid in Haiti & Pakistan after natural disasters struck. We pride ourselves on creating products that are:
• Environmentally conscious
• More effective than currently used products
• Competitive pricing
GFS TECHNOLOGY
GFS Microbial products are based on our revolutionary, patented process for the production of surfactin. Producing commercial quantities of surfactin has been highly sought after for decades due to its exceptional surface activity. From this advancement, GFS has developed environmentally friendly solutions for industries where toxic chemical use has been prevalent.
What is GFS Poultry Protect?
•GFS Poultry Protect is a combination of a natural bacteria Bacillus subtilis & the surfactin that it produces, negating the use of traditional chemical based disinfectants such as formaldehyde
•Bacillus subtilis produces a naturally occurring Lipid peptide (surfactin) that inhibits the growth of problem bacteria while helping to control environmental odour, viruses, fungi & pathogenic bacteria
•Bacillus subtilis helps to break down waste in the litter
•Bacillus subtilis is classified as a low risk bacteria by US.EPA
Ammonia Emissions in Poultry
Ammonia is a colorless, highly irritant, alkaline gas which is generated by microbial activity on faecal uric acid when the litter is moist. Ammonia is a water soluble gas and can thus be absorbed in dust particles and litter as well as mucus membranes. It is toxic to animal cells with known symptoms of ammonia poisoning including conjunctivitis, coughing, sneezing and dyspnoea.
Ammonia emissions in broiler houses are a bird welfare concern. They can produce serious health threats to the birds such as increase risk of skin burns. The main health & welfare effects associated with high ammonia levels are:
•High incidence of contact dermatitis: foot, hock and breast burns that can be a gateway for bacteria causing further health problems
•Trachea & lung lesions which are associated with fluid accumulation and decreased oxygen levels, rendering the birds more susceptible to bacterial infections such as E. coli
•Eye irritation
•Offensive odours that can lead to complaints from adjoining properties
•Potential workplace health and safety concerns due to high levels of ammonia exposure
Effects of Ammonia Emissions in Poultry
A trial in North America tested for ammonia emissions taking air samples from barns at day 1, 5, 16, 21 and 39. The samples were analysed for ammonia concentrations using Drager tubes. Barns one and two were treated with GFS Poultry Protect, while barns three and four were treated with a leading competitors product. Due to ammonia concentrations in barn three and four, full fan ventilation was required. Due to the exceptional ability of GFS Poultry Protect controlling the formation of ammonia gas, the poultry facility may benefit from considerable energy savings; due to the reduction in use of expensive fans and other ammonia displacing technologies.

A four story caged egg laying facility where manure falls onto conveyer belts was assessed for ammonia concentration. The top three stories manure is delivered by conveyer belt to a v-shaped platform door separating top and bottom floors. When the door opens, the manure (16,000 lbs) is deposited onto a windrow approximately 6 feet high.
The windrow of manure was misted with Poultry Protect at 4 locations. At locations one and two GFS Poultry Protect was applied neat, while at locations three and four GFS Poultry Protect was diluted 1:16 with water.
When the manure was left untreated and fans were not used to disperse the ammonia produced, ammonia levels in the facility reached 500ppm. When fans were used ammonia levels dropped to <50ppm.
The results of GFS Poultry Protect being applied to the manure over a 28 day period are shown in the following table.

Bacteria in Poultry Litter
Control of bacteria in poultry litter is of major importance, not only for the control of ammonia emissions, but for the protection of birds and humans from bacteria such as E Coli, Salmonella and Camplylobacter Jejuni, to name a few. Several million tons of poultry litter or manure are generated annually by poultry farms. A substantial portion of the litter or manure is estimated to be disposed of by spreading on croplands. Salmonella and E. coli have been recovered from litter or manure for up to 120 days after the removal of poultry flocks that were raised on the litter, or produced the manure. Salmonella and E. coli have also been shown to survive in litter or manure-treated soils for up to 2 months.
Controlling Bacteria in Poultry Litter
GFS Poultry Protect has proved very effective at controlling bacteria in poultry litter over an extended period of time. Testing has been completed against some of the most common bacteria:
• Salmonella Enterica
• E Coli
• Camplolybacter Jejuni The active ingredients in GFS Poultry Protect have also been tested against many other strains of bacteria with excellent success in the control of pathogens.
GFS Poultry Protect – Laboratory Testing
Campylobacter jejuni
Escherichia Coli
All testing has been completed by Marble Laboratories. Full reports are available on request.

GFS Poultry Protect – Field Trial Results North America
Four 2044m2 broiler sheds were used with 22,300 birds in each. Two were treated with GFS Poultry Protect and the others with a competitor’s product. Results showed:
•Feed conversion ratio was improved by 1-2% per cycle
•Reduction in ammonia levels over 39 plus days with reduced need for ventilation fans
•Reduction in unwanted odours in and around the sheds
•Bird mortality rates reduced by 0.5%
•The birds exhibited no feet or breast burns and were all graded at the highest level
•A 5% increase in bird weight was achieved
GFS Poultry Protect – Effect on Darkling Beetle
GFS Poultry Protect was applied to litter which was then windrowed. The litter was checked for darkling beetle larvae and any larvae found were collected and monitored. The darkling beetle expired within two hours of exposure to the litter treatment. No live darkling beetles were found 24 hours post treatment. Our field testing has shown that:
•Darkling beetle populations are dramatically reduced in houses treated with GFS Poultry Protect
•GFS Poultry Protect showed that after 2-3 hours of application, darking beetles were evacuating hidden sites of poultry sheds
GFS Poultry Protect - Application
Application of GFS Poultry Protect is a two step process. Step 1 Dilute GFS Poultry Protect with water according to mixing instructions. Using a fogging machine apply GFS Poultry Protect to the roof and walls. Step 2 Dilute GFS Poultry Protect with water according to mixing instructions. Ensure litter is spread over the shed floor prior to application. Using a spraying machine apply GFS Poultry Protect to the litter.
GFS Poultry Protect – Observations From Field Trials
•Darkling beetle populations are dramatically reduced in sheds treated with GFS Poultry Protect
•Potential for the reduction of antibiotics used in poultry production
•Bird faeces are solid rather than liquid meaning better uptake of nutrients and less effects from pathogens
•Less time between growth cycles as clean up time is reduced and delays caused by toxic chemicals are reduced.
•Preliminary indications show a potential increase in overall productivity of approximatley 15%
•Virus and pathogen control over the grow cycle
•A potential reduction in the impact of Avian Flu
•Indications of the control of Marek’s disease
•Overall reduction in mortality
GFS Poultry Protect – Further Research and Testing

GFS Poultry Protect - Conclusion
GFS Poultry Protect is the next generation of poultry house sanitizer that has been designed to help the poultry industry move away from the use of toxic chemicals in food production. Stepping away from the traditional approach of using poisons to control the environment, GFS Poultry Protect takes the approach of utilizing the best of what nature has provided. The advantages of this approach go beyond the control of pathogenic bacteria, but extend to creating a better environment for the flock, which in turn helps to produce healthier, heavier birds. This along with the other products in the GFS BioProtect range are a huge step forward in creating a cleaner and greener world for everyone. Thank you.

  • 5. Ammonia Emissions in Poultry Ammonia is a colorless, highly irritant, alkaline gas which is generated by microbial activity on faecal uric acid when the litter is moist. Ammonia is a water soluble gas and can thus be absorbed in dust particles and litter as well as mucus membranes. It is toxic to animal cells with known symptoms of ammonia poisoning including conjunctivitis, coughing, sneezing and dyspnoea.
  • 6. Ammonia emissions in broiler houses are a bird welfare concern. They can produce serious health threats to the birds such as increase risk of skin burns. The main health & welfare effects associated with high ammonia levels are: •High incidence of contact dermatitis: foot, hock and breast burns that can be a gateway for bacteria causing further health problems •Trachea & lung lesions which are associated with fluid accumulation and decreased oxygen levels, rendering the birds more susceptible to bacterial infections such as E. coli •Eye irritation •Offensive odours that can lead to complaints from adjoining properties •Potential workplace health and safety concerns due to high levels of ammonia exposure Effects of Ammonia Emissions in Poultry
  • 7. • 8. Results of GFS Poultry Protect on Egg Farm Ammonia Emissions

  • 10. Bacteria in Poultry Litter Control of bacteria in poultry litter is of major importance, not only for the control of ammonia emissions, but for the protection of birds and humans from bacteria such as E Coli, Salmonella and Camplylobacter Jejuni, to name a few.
  • 11. Controlling Bacteria in Poultry Litter GFS Poultry Protect has proved very effective at controlling bacteria in poultry litter over an extended period of time. Testing has been completed against some of the most common bacteria: • Salmonella Enterica • E Coli • Camplolybacter Jejuni The active ingredients in GFS Poultry Protect have also been tested against many other strains of bacteria with excellent success in the control of pathogens.
