Background:
The grammar translation method is a method of
teaching foreign languages. Dates back to
Erasmus 1466-1536 - He used to teach Latin
and Greek. Earlier in the 20th century, this
method was used to help students to read and
appreciate foreign literature.

Characteristics

Classes are taught in mother tongue
Long elaborate explanations on the intricacies of grammar are
given.
Vocabulary are taught through wordlists and translation
Instruction often focus on the form and inflection of words
Teacher-centred
Reading of literary passages even at low levels, with reading
comprehension questions
Elaborate presentation of grammar rules
Memorization of grammar rules and vocabulary
Vocabulary exercises include antonyms and synonyms, definitions
etc based on words in reading texts
Composition exercises based on topics from reading text

Method's techniques,
which include:

Students in GTM translate literary works from the target
language into their native tongue.
They search for synonyms and antonyms for terms in the
text.
Students read lengthy texts in order to gather information, draw
inferences, and establish connections to personal experiences.
They attempt to grasp the grammar structure first, then apply it to
examples.
Learners detect similarities by comparing and contrasting spelling
and sound patterns in their mother and target languages.
Students learn multilingual vocabulary, grammar rules, and
grammatical paradigms in GTM classes.
They use targeted language to produce paragraphs, articles, or
summaries on a specific topic.
Learners used to remember vocabulary in order to employ it in
sentences.
Teacher’s Roles:
Use the mother tongue -with little oral production of the
target language.
Ask and give instructions to learners to state the
grammar rules.
Teacher acts as a facilitator and gives practices to
students to focus on translating sentences or texts from
their mother tongue to the target language.
Learner's Roles:
Learners acquire knowledge from what their teacher asks
to do.
Learners have to actively memorize vocabulary lists,
grammar rules that are required for reading, writing and
translation skills.
Learners have to translate literary text from the target
language to their mother tongue.
Easiest and shortest way of explaining
the meaning of words and phrases.
Learners have no difficulties
understanding the lesson as it is carried
out in the mother tongue
A labor-saving method as the teacher
carries out everything in the mother
tongue.
Advantages
Does not enhance a student’s
communicative ability in the language.
Students ignore habit formation (Does
not acquire the habit to think in English)
The learning method is not interesting.
Disadvantages
