listening exercises and an opportunity to substantiate an opinion. The
test taker must respond to at least one question from each part of
Reading and Listening to get an official score. In addition, she must
write an essay and complete one Speaking exercise.

The following tips can help
you in preparing for and
performing well on the TOEFL
Test:
TOEFL General Tips
• Enhance your typing abilities
• Never leave a blank space in a question. Make a guess: you have a
25% chance of getting the correct answer.

• Develop your note-taking skills and develop your own
abbreviations for frequently used words and phrases.
• Academic English should be learned through textbooks,
encyclopedias, journals, and research articles to familiarize
yourself with the language and presentation used in academic
material.
Reading Section: 60–80 minutes;
36–56 questions
• When taking practice exams, avoid using a dictionary—you will not
have access to one on the actual test.
• Questions will be asked in the order in which they appear in the
text. First, skim the passage, then examine the questions, and
last, look for details.
• Emphasize the passage's essential concepts and data, such as
dates and figures. This will simplify referring to the document
when responding to inquiries. You are not required to be familiar
with the reading passages' content. The answers are contained
entirely within the passage.
Listening Section: 60–90 minutes;
34–51 questions
• When practicing, play the listening material only once, as you
will hear everything only once on exam day. You must first train
your ears to truly listen the first time.
• Listen to spoken English from various sources to become familiar
with different accents and pronunciations.
• Having said that, avoid focusing exclusively on the speaker's

accent and delivery style. Instead, your primary focus should be on
the information's content and flow.
• Bear in mind that some information is also accessible on your
computer screen. For example, when the lecturer refers to specific
words/phrases or visuals, these may appear on-screen. Therefore,
ensure that you are also paying attention to your computer screen.

• Improve your fluency. One method is to read aloud; another is to
obtain some listening material, put on earbuds, and repeat what the
speaker says.
• Avoid a strange accent. This does not result in increased marks!
Speaking Section: 20 minutes; six
tasks
• Spend as much time as possible. It is acceptable to pause for a
beat or two before responding. Then, if you have a few additional
seconds, in the end, you can summarize your arguments in a brief
conclusion.
• Avoid using large words that you cannot pronounce correctly, as
you may lose marks for poor pronunciation. Additionally, verify
that you understand how to use an expression properly before
attempting to apply it on exam day. Incorrect usage of terminology
and idioms will result in a loss of marks.
Writing Section: 50 minutes; two
tasks

• When you practice for the essay, choose a format that feels
comfortable to you and stick to it.
• Keep your writing simple and straight forward, and adhere to the
word limit.
• Provide numerous examples to support your essay.
• Always go over what you've written—allow ample time for this.
