The origins of the project
What we did in Zanzibar
What are the ongoing/future projects?
What support is needed?
Plenty of time for questions!
A quick bit of history and geography…
• Location: East Africa, off the coast of Tanganyika
(mainland Tanzania), which was granted
independence from Britain in 1963
• In 1964 the ruling Sultan of Zanzibar was
overthrown by African revolutionaries. The death
toll is estimated as up to 20,000 Arabs and South
Asians
• Prior to 1964, Zanzibar was a territory of Oman
After the revolution, it became a semi-autonomous
part of Tanzania
• The island is 53 miles long and 24 miles wide with
beautiful sandy beaches and biodiverse coral reefs
• The schools project is located in Unguja Ukuu,
a remote village, hidden from the tourist trail
Unguja Ukuu
Language: Swahili
Religion: Muslim
The Zanzibar HELP Foundation
• In 2010 Feroz and Hassan set up the Zanzibar HELP
Foundation to bring development assistance to the
people of Zanzibar
• Feroz set up a successful free dental clinic which
offered outreach dental health to remote villages
• Working with the villagers of Unguja Ukuu, they
rebuilt the primary school to accommodate 800
children aged 5 -14
• For health reasons, Feroz has transferred the dental
clinic to the UK charity HIPZ but is still involved in
outreach camps and improving local dentistry
• Caroline and Ann have taken on the challenge of
enhancing the educational offering of the school
